When they stay at the abandoned farmstead in The Theif, Gen mentions that the farm once belonged to the Magus' family (page 49 in my copy), and they're still in Sounis at that point. So, unless the borders changed drastically since the Magus left home, I'd say he's Sounisian.

Although, I must admit, I like the idea of olive groves randomly spawning Magi.

well, I was thinking about the whole thing about how Sounis pushed the Attolians on the other side of the mountains, and I couldn't remember how recent that had been. So he could have been born Attolian, but raised Sounisian.

Gen knew that Ambiades was working for Attolia, not the Magus (and he knew that because he found the fancy comb that Ambiades would not be able to afford regularly.).

Magus hadn't been working for Attolia. In his roundabout way, Gen was telling the Magus that Gen was framing the Magus.

Ooh, that's a very good point. There's more to this guy than we know.

If the Magus was Attolian-born, and grew up on the border of Eddis and Sounis, don't you think that would be a ... galvanising start in life for someone who's going to be so political in future?

Also, you know, that information about the Attolians living on that side of the Hephestials hasn't come up again or seemed to be significant at all so far. Perhaps it's only there as a pointer to the Magus' past.

All has been made clear now. Sounis was mad when he thought the Magus ran off because he thought the whole batch would have to be thrown out. THAT'S why he was pissed when he discovered the Magus was actually kidnapped. All those Maguses (magi?) rotting in the compost heaps for nothing!
