Apr. 1st, 2006 11:31 pmFirst of all, welcome to History_lover, who has left lurkerdom, but didn't make it to the chat.
Iris and I forgot that our clocks here in the UK had gone forward by an hour last Sunday, so we both showed up an hour early and wondered where everyone else was. I've posted our idiotic ramblings below (seperately, if you want to skip over them), as well as the actual chat when Checkers and Anon8 and fabricalchemist showed up. We discussed some interesting things, so comments on the transcript would be nice.
Some points that didn't get answered were the idea of Gen being kind (at the end of KoA) and speculation about Sophos (which won't really be answered until the next book), though we also discussed the character's respective ages, and names, and The Game as well. Lots about The Game.

Twilight (Iris): hmm
Twilight (Iris): no one around?
Twilight (Iris): and here i was thinking that there was a chat scheduled!
rowana from x.x.x.126 joined the chat 2 seconds ago
Twilight (Iris): Ooh Ro
rowana: *peers around*
rowana: I think everyone forgot again.
rowana: Yes?
Twilight (Iris): hmm
Twilight (Iris): ooo
Twilight (Iris): Noonenes
rowana: have you finished The Thief yet?
Twilight (Iris): Aargh woah!
Twilight (Iris): erm
Twilight (Iris): *guilty look* not yet
rowana: Is the computor attacking you?
rowana: ! Get to it!!!
Twilight (Iris): Blaaaarg! Digibytes!
rowana: Where're you up to?
Twilight (Iris): nooothing!
Twilight (Iris): bad answer
Twilight (Iris): edit: Reading
rowana: huh?
rowana: As in, 'where're you up to'?
rowana: though it's nice to know what you're up to too. :)
Twilight (Iris): erm im around the part where Gen is suicidal, Sophos is a manic depressive and the Magus is trying to be the heroic Martyr
rowana: :D
rowana: 'Sophos the manic depressive' *falls off chair*
Twilight (Iris): I.e. theyre escaping from the attolian prison ^^
rowana: Ah! I thought he was more wistful then, that was the bit where Gen had to tell him to shut up?
Twilight (Iris): ...
Twilight (Iris): Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
rowana: :D
rowana: I'm right. Again.
Twilight (Iris): erm...
rowana: Oh, have you read all the suggestions for the game?
Twilight (Iris): as interested by that LJ post about fencing...who did that
rowana: I created a handy post a while ago to collect them.
Twilight (Iris): was*
Twilight (Iris): hmm ill read through the suggestions...
rowana: Can't remember. Someone clever. :) It was a comment on Checkers' post, I think.
Twilight (Iris): and i'll try my best
Twilight (Iris): and if my best isnt enogh ...
Twilight (Iris): we go to the block together
rowana: you die
Twilight (Iris): :S
rowana: stampeded by hordes of raving fangirls
Twilight (Iris): ... oh deers
rowana: Nice quote. I'm liking teh linkage. :)
rowana: Typots strike again.
Twilight (Iris): ^^
Twilight (Iris): BUAHAHAH!
Twilight (Iris): The Phantom Typot
rowana: :D
Twilight (Iris): The Attack Of The Typots
Twilight (Iris): The Revenge Of The Typots
rowana: stop.
Twilight (Iris): A New Typot
rowana: Stop now.
Twilight (Iris): The Typot Strikes Back
Twilight (Iris): The Return Of The Typot
rowana: ...
rowana: *beats head against wall*
rowana: ...right
rowana: no more quotes, or links
rowana: Let's talk more about the game
Twilight (Iris): fine
rowana: good
Twilight (Iris): i shall keep Star Wars well away from the Thief...well Gen with a Lightsaber...AHEM moving on
rowana: Sacrilege!
rowana: ...actually
Twilight (Iris): Falchion then :(
Twilight (Iris): in all its curviness
rowana: More like it
rowana: But you have to read QoA!
Twilight (Iris): QoA ism
Twilight (Iris): !!!
rowana: ?
Twilight (Iris): nothing ^^
rowana: Have you ever heard that Discworld quote:
rowana: "Many exclamation marks is a sure sign of insanity"
Twilight (Iris): :S
rowana: Be afraid.
Twilight (Iris): Ro...you seen that game i suggested to you? the one which i wanna use as a style base for the Game
rowana: Yes, the ronin one? I have the screencaps saved of the good bits, but you really need to talk to some artsy people about drawing them for you
Twilight (Iris): ooooooooohhhhh
rowana: Yes
Twilight (Iris): hos that 1 u told me about
Twilight (Iris): cloth pharmacist?
rowana: er, fabricalchemist?
rowana: What!?
Twilight (Iris): thats the one!
rowana: Are we speaking different languages?
Twilight (Iris): noooo
rowana: oookay...
Twilight (Iris): Ja
rowana: *edges away*
Twilight (Iris): Nein!
rowana: How many levels are you thinking of btw, for the game
Twilight (Iris): ...
Twilight (Iris): rm
Twilight (Iris): erm*
Twilight (Iris): YPOT!
Twilight (Iris): TYPOT*
rowana: *sighs*
Twilight (Iris): im just gettng into the feeling Ro...God!
rowana: *radiates exasperation*
rowana: I've just had a thought
Twilight (Iris): dont hate me cos i intergrate! *Z SMNAP*
rowana: I've given up trying to understand your language.
Twilight (Iris): its filled with Typots
Twilight (Iris): hmmm
rowana: ...
Twilight (Iris): we could call it Pottish
rowana: isn't the point of coherent language to avoid typots?
rowana: *goes looking for that handy wall again*
Twilight (Iris): typos ro...theyre called typos in your inferior form of speech! Puuh!
rowana: Right!
rowana: No more tangents!
rowana: The game!! Now!!!
Twilight (Iris): Typos*
Twilight (Iris): ok game
rowana: Yes. Good.
Twilight (Iris): level 1 would be
Twilight (Iris): Seal Ringage!
rowana: Gen sneaking around the palace to find the ring
Twilight (Iris): yep
rowana: to translate from Pottish
Twilight (Iris): oi ypou lebve ofgf myt langhuage
rowana: *hates you*
Twilight (Iris): *hugs*
rowana: :P
Twilight (Iris): ^^
rowana: I would tell you to grow up now, but I just stuck my tongue out, and would feel a bit hypocritical
Twilight (Iris): ...
rowana: Yes. The game
Twilight (Iris): yeeeees because we're not 3 yr olds in adolescent bodies!
rowana: Second level. I think it was CBjen's great suggestions - to have Gen sneaking around the inn to find food
Twilight (Iris): hmm
rowana: Speak for yourself. Adolescent. *sniffs*
Twilight (Iris): ...fine
Twilight (Iris): ure not a 3 yr old in a 3 yr olds body
Twilight (Iris): ok level 2
rowana: ...
rowana: How did you know? ;)
Twilight (Iris): hmm
rowana: Maybe we could have a level where you have to classify trees
rowana: fannish, and educational. :D
rowana: Wait, what about the whole copyright thing.
rowana: I wanted to ask someone this. Will someone sue us if we make this game?
Twilight (Iris): My parrot Suku says: How about a mathematical formula which would help you to equate the root of all ideas, use this to produce amazing ideas for games!
Twilight (Iris): ah
Twilight (Iris): copyright...
rowana: ...what
Twilight (Iris): hmm
rowana: ??
rowana: I think I should email MWT and ask her very nicely
Twilight (Iris): what ill do is...we will of course ask Ms Turner, but for now i wont put any comparison to the Thief onto the game with logos etc
Twilight (Iris): and were not making any money from it are we? its just gonna be a flash webgame
rowana: true
Twilight (Iris): if worst comes to worst Miss Megan (who writes rocking books BTW) will take us to the Gallows Pole
rowana: wait...we're going to have a logo?
Twilight (Iris): which isnt so bad
rowana: You could ask octopirock if you could use her cool badge
Twilight (Iris): she could use red hot ions
rowana: I'm sure Megan wouldn't want to hang us.
rowana: We could always offer to babysit as compensation. :)
Twilight (Iris): ah logo, no what i said was we wont put anything that says "The Thief" on it
rowana: okay.
Twilight (Iris): you no, im not too sure about me though *gulp*
Twilight (Iris): ok level 2
rowana: *rolls eyes*
rowana: yes...
rowana: we need to talk about the mechanics more
Twilight (Iris): thres just a whole loada travelling in between
rowana: what will the characters be able to do, what will the animation look like?
Twilight (Iris): lets finish talking bout the levels first
rowana: Yes, but that could be...running away from goats?
rowana: er, trying to collect olives in the sea of olives?
Twilight (Iris): erm...
Twilight (Iris): wait
rowana: Yes, levels
rowana: ?
Twilight (Iris): that barmaid who gave him the hair tie and that wierd level
Twilight (Iris): we could start it from there
Twilight (Iris): what happened when they lefT?
Twilight (Iris): good i left the copy of the Thief at ur house so ur gonna have to remind me
rowana: they...travelled?
rowana: Gen had to stay on a horse
rowana: um, they stopped at other places
Twilight from x.x.x.126 joined the chat 3 seconds ago
rowana: You really need to ask CBjen and everyone else. They have great level ideas. There was a good suggestion from someone a while ago for some of the detail for the maze level.
Twilight: ... just had a nasty thouight
Twilight: you think that maybe they dont know we’ve gone forward an hour?
rowana: ...bollocks.
Twilight: oh geez Ro...filthy mouth!
rowana: That would be why no one else's here. :D
rowana: It's my fault, I should have written 10-11 GMT time in the post, cos we're six hours ahead instead of five hours ahead now.
Twilight: tu tut
rowana: Ah well, people will start showing in about 15 mins then
rowana: :D oh well.
checkers from x.x.x.91 joined the chat 7 seconds ago
checkers: hello guys
Twilight: oh nuts
rowana: Checkers! Hey :)
Twilight: dont scroll up!
checkers: what's up?
checkers: too late :)
Twilight: randomness
checkers: how are you all?
rowana: Er, we got the time mixed up. Our clocks went forward a while ago, so we've been hanging otu for an hour
Twilight: bah
Twilight: been rumbled Ro
rowana: it's been fun. :) Good. How're you?
checkers: oh no! our clocks go forward tonight
checkers: i'm ok, you?
anon8 from x.x.x.179 joined the chat 4 seconds ago
Twilight: great!...i knew we shouldve done this tomorrow ^^
checkers: that's ok. hi anon!
rowana: Been enjoying the start of my Easter holiday.
anon8: hi everybody!
rowana: Hey anon
Twilight: Anon anon, hello
anon8: hi iris
Twilight: :D
rowana: We've just been discussing the game and whether we might get sued for it
Twilight: ...youll get sued...ill be hung :P
rowana: *rolls eyes*
checkers: hmmm, good point. I don't think so, but emwit would be the one to ask permission from, I guess
Twilight: tis the gallows pole for me, and the hangman/woman is MWT
checkers: my, aren't we dramatic
rowana: True. :) I'll write a nice email.
Twilight: hahaha...Ro just phoned me to tell me to grow up ^^
Twilight: i will
checkers: hahaha
rowana: ...
checkers: let him be, Ro. without fabricalchemist, we need humor
rowana: :) True
checkers: where has she gone, do you know?
Twilight: humor? i considered myself as more of a jester...more laughing at than with
Twilight: but anyways, to business
rowana: I thought fabrical chemist was meant to be back last thursday
checkers: we can laugh at you, if you like. i thought so, too
checkers: she is shunning us
rowana: ...yes, to business. :)
checkers: *pouts*
rowana: Court Jester?
checkers: yes, business
anon8: okay, finished reading backlogs :D
rowana: I think she thought the chat was yesterday
Twilight: ...i already have that title in another community, dont force me to do it!
rowana: You brought it upon yourself. ;) Yes, you were saying something about teh animation?
Twilight: we were?
Twilight: level 2 i thought
Twilight: or level 3 yes
rowana: You were. Or levels, yes.
rowana: Yep. ideas for level three? This is after the 'stealing the king's seal' level, and the 'stealing food from the inn' level.
rowana: Perhaps there should be one in between.
checkers: ok. what's next?
anon8: getting the food back from the Magus
Twilight: ..."stealing time in the prison" level?
rowana: Doesn't he just eat the oranges in his pocket?
anon8: well, yeah, but he does want his lunch back
rowana: Although, staying entirely true to the book isn't an option, so yeah, getting food from the magus is definitely an idea.
rowana: :) True
anon8: or maybe just staying on the horse? while trotting?
Twilight: a whole level on that?
Twilight: yeh
Twilight: horse riding
Twilight: ok so u got adventure tutorial which is the seal ring level
anon8: mmm, well, maybe as something to do in addition to__________
rowana: perhaps something about keeping his horse on course. Except it was a pack horse.
Twilight: then riding tutorial
rowana: This is more difficult than i thought.
checkers: true. it never strayed
rowana: :) We're going to have to skip large chunks of the book where there's no action.
anon8: well, if you really don't follow canon, you could have him trying to knock Ambiades off his horse while not getting caught and while staying on his
rowana: Perhaps you could dedicate three levels to the maze? One for every night?
Twilight: perfect ^^
checkers: how many levels do you think we'll have?
checkers: that might help decide what to have in each one
Twilight: 15 ish
rowana: Nice idea anon :)
Twilight: maybe less
anon8: wow
rowana: 15? Isn't that a bit muchy?
rowana: Gah. typots.
Twilight: maybe less
checkers: ha
Twilight: dont get me started on pottish
checkers: pottish?
Twilight: right so we have 3 levels now
anon8: is the "finish" getting out of the maze alive w/ Hamiathes's gift, or getting back to Eddis?
rowana: Typot language. Me and Iris had an interesting discussion
checkers: :) I would thing the end would have to be getting back to Eddis. a level could be getting across the river
Twilight: erm, i still havnt finished but the final level would definitely be after they get out of the attolian prison
rowana: I think being chased by Attolia's guards would be a good level, so the finish should probably be where the book ends
anon8: sounds good
rowana: Yep.
checkers: when you say you havent's finished, Iris, do you mean you still haven't finished the BOOK?
rowana: :)
rowana: Yes Iris. Why haven't you finished the book?
checkers: Come on! Get with it!
Twilight: shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....MWT might hear you!....*whispers* im at the bit where Gen is Suicidal, Sophos is a manic depressant and the magus is trying to be a heroic martyr
anon8: finish it! soon!
rowana: You're close to the end now, right?
rowana: We can't ruin it for you. :)
anon8: oh, okay
checkers: I love your description. :)
rowana: You said that before. I'm still not seeing Sophos as a manic depressive.
Twilight: Pol is dead :( he reminded me so much of my IT tutor
anon8: yeah, me neither
anon8: not getting the manic part of the depressent
anon8: he's chatting about his sisters
rowana: :) I'm not really getting the depressent part of the manic.
checkers: well, he's sad because Pol is dead...
rowana: Oh right! Depressent is accurate then.
Twilight: erm...fine then...hes a ninny! which one do you want Sophos the girl or Shophos the mourner?
rowana: Sophos does seem to grow up towards the end. It seems to bode well for his future.
anon8: he still can't stop blushing
Twilight: ^^
checkers: maybe he outgrows that
Twilight: Sophos the radiator
rowana: ...
checkers: :)
rowana: Why the radiator?
anon8: he must be fair-skinned
checkers: I picture him as blond, do you think? like the king
Twilight: blushing usually means that blood rushes to your cheeks Ro
Twilight: ...erm, i more saw sophos as...actually yes a kind of blonde
rowana: Yes, but I always saw him as being short, like Gen too. Very thin.
anon8: YES
rowana: :P
Twilight: :P
anon8: shorter than Gen, but mostly cuz he's younger
Twilight: *mind link*
rowana: Stop. Yes, Sophos seemed quite frail
checkers: you two are scaring me
rowana: Not, frail, but...
checkers: frail? I suppose
rowana: He started it. *pouts* ;)
Twilight: nooo Sophos seems as if he could be chucked under a pile of bricks and wouldnt die, not that i would want to
rowana: Do you guys think Sophos will end up outgrowing Gen?
Twilight: yes
checkers: Yes, definitely
anon8: yes
anon8: though his uncle the king is rather short...so, you never know
rowana: Sophos seems the typs of tall, thin, fair person whom people tend to ignore
checkers: i picture him coming back all Greek-goddish and changed
rowana: wow
Twilight: ...
checkers: :)
rowana: It'd be nice. :)
checkers: then again, maybe not
rowana: I dunno, I think after KoA, that's one of the options
rowana: So it could happen. Perhaps not entirely Greek-goddish, but certainly changed.
anon8: yeah, but I liked him the way he was, sweet and a little naive
anon8: though I'm guessing he's no longer naive
rowana: Yes. But I wonder what his position is with the rebels. Either way, not naive any more.
Twilight: i would love to see Sophos towering over Gen asking him if he wanted a comb and being shunned away :D (ive only read the thief dont know how he develops further)
checkers: very sweet, especially for someone who was raised as the king's possible...wait a minute. Iris hasn't finished the book
anon8: okay, hold discussion on stuff after where Iris had read
rowana: Oh yes, sorry Iris.
rowana: More incentive to get reading. :)
Twilight: no its k ^^ i have no long term memory ...im a crammer, need to write things down if i want to remember them after 2 days
checkers: yo, empmai is here. come on in!
rowana: Empmai! Hey :) Join the chat
checkers: we were talking about Sophos and how he might have changed when we see him next
rowana: Er, fabricalchemist just came online on yahoo
Twilight: y'know the bit where Gen steals the stone then runs...strangely enough the song dont stop me now" came on the radio just as he started running
rowana: *goes to drag her in*
checkers: im her and tell her to get over here
Twilight: thats irrelavant tho :P
checkers: how freaky, though
anon8: yeah
Twilight: i knw :S
checkers: i cna't listen to music while I read
anon8: me neither
anon8: unless it's classical or new age, no words
Twilight: it was mercury FM: i.e. voices and then suddenly...music!
checkers: maybe once you trun the music off, Iris, you;ll be able to finish the book. :)
checkers: no pressure, though
Twilight: ohhhh....meh
checkers: :)
checkers: are you feeling ganged up on, yet?
Twilight: ah
rowana: :)
Twilight: but when im not reading im making your game my friend
checkers: ah, true. forgive me.
Twilight: (thats a horrible lie)
rowana: *sighs*
fabricalchemist from x.x.x.61 joined the chat 2 seconds ago
anon8: hi Bear!
rowana: Hey
fabricalchemist: Hey
Twilight: i cant read tonight cos Ro has my book which is really hers but im borrowing ^^
Twilight: ey ey Fab
checkers: Bear!
fabricalchemist: :)
rowana: How are you?
checkers: yes, what's up?
fabricalchemist: um. nothing?
Twilight: i think...i can do a Eugenedies and run down to Ro's house and pick it up...before it gets too late...gimme 5 mins
fabricalchemist: whats all this about Sophos being in with the kidnappers?
rowana: Bye Iris. And see you soon.
checkers: bye, Iris!
checkers: In with the kidnappers? I wonder.
fabricalchemist: Isnt that what you guys were saying?
fabricalchemist: Psh, I dunno.
rowana: At keast he'd be alive. And rebelling against his uncle. Which would put him in a better position to marry Helen if he succeeded.
anon8: yeah
rowana: But, that would be a bit too perfect I guess.
checkers: Yes, I still think he wasn't kidnapped, but that he's hiding
anon8: cuz his uncle would just hand over his rule
anon8: but how'd he escape the rebels?
checkers: well, he still may have an heir of his own.
rowana: We know Sounis is recapturing his land from the rebels too, so if Sophos is with them, he's losing
checkers: never know
checkers: that's true
rowana: Would Sophos lead the rebels without declaring himself too? I guess he must just be what Gen thinks - kidnapped and probably dead
checkers: the book never said for sure he was captured by the rebels, everyone is just assuming he was
checkers: NO!
anon8: well, the rebels said they had him as a hostage
checkers: are you sure?
anon8: unless they didn't really have him? or he escaped?
anon8: erm...don't have book in front of me
rowana: Yes, I think anon's right. Unless that's a clever ploy on Sophos' part
anon8: or on the rebels' part: they don't have him, but pretend they do
fabricalchemist: I think you're giving that boy too much credit. This is Sophos we're talking about, here.
rowana: Perhaps. But then where is Sophos?
anon8: people change, plus he's had time to grow up
checkers: *sigh* true. How much could he change in, what, 3 years?
Twilight: but u know Fab, these ones worship Sophos like a "greek god"
fabricalchemist: Yes, but I doubt he's capable of Genesque intrigue no matter how much growing up he's done.
anon8: closer to 4-5 now
rowana: Could he have grown up enough to lead an army against his uncle in a few short years? Perhaps his father is involved, and he's just a pawn.
checkers: well, a girl can hope :)
anon8: yeah, his father seems pretty capable
Twilight: his father is a duke, there is a sort of motive...is he stable win his place or does he want more?
checkers: how old do you think he was in The Thief? 14 at most?
fabricalchemist: maybe twelve
checkers: we can't tell you, Iris, it will give something away
Twilight: i think of him as around 14-15
rowana: Iris, go and read. Then come back.
checkers: you must be of the Gen-is-older school
rowana: One of the big bits of the book is the revelations at the end. :)
Twilight: :O, i am uite capable of forgetting thank you
Twilight: i imagined Gen as 29 ish in the thief
checkers: get outta here!
Twilight: :S am i wrong?
rowana: No way iris
anon8: NO way!
Twilight: fiiiine then Soph might be around 9 in the thief
checkers: Tres wrong
anon8: 12
anon8: -14
rowana: Gen's referred to as a boy. I see him as 16 or so, or perhaps 18 at the most.
anon8: 14-16 is my take
rowana: I agree with anon. Bout 14
Twilight: im not answering that phone...probs Ro gonna shout at me again :P
anon8: for Gen
checkers: even Ambiades is called a boy, and we know he is at least a couple of years older
rowana: It's just that gen is far more experienced. I think that's hinted at in KoA when he talks about his early life.
anon8: 16-18, snobby high schooler is what I pictured
Twilight: hmm i guess so
checkers: me, too
Twilight: i had no idea Gen was that yong
rowana: Yep. Perhaps 19, but 18 seems more likely.
anon8: think: Greece, pre-modern
anon8: people did things very young, married young, Spartans started military training at like, 7-9 years of age
Twilight: thanks for enlightening ^^ now he seems around 17-18 to me
rowana: 14 would be a good age in relation to that for Ambiades to look down upon, for Sophos.
anon8: so, i guess i threw out too many #s: 12-14 for Sophos, 14-16 for Gen, 16-18 for Ambiades
Twilight: hmmm he would probably be all wierd and thinking hes right all the time around 14 Ambiades
rowana: What about the Magus? 45 ish?
anon8: 50
checkers: no, younger
anon8: Pol maybe 45ish
Twilight: Ambiades is older than Gen? thats it RO gimme QoA and KoA now!
checkers: early 40s
rowana: We've had this convo. :) I'm wondering about Helen and Attolia's ages too, though.
anon8: mid-20s is my take
checkers: Sorry, Iris, you can't move on until we are certain you fully understand the book
Twilight: hehe this is helping a lot
rowana: Iris, seriously, go read the ending. It's the best part of the book.
fabricalchemist: Pol would be early 30's
anon8: totally
anon8: about the ending
rowana: Yeah. Do you think Pol, like Costis, has his own internal sense of humour?
Twilight: ill just read now ^^, chat and book, scuse me!
anon8: I still think Pol is older
checkers: I think, Gen=17, Helen=20, Irene=23. In The Thief
checkers: but that's just me
fabricalchemist: Um. I'm going to go lie down.
anon8: hrm, I guess I could go with that, but I was thinking a couple years younger for all three, but similar distance between them
anon8: i dunno why i keep picturing them younger
Twilight from x.x.x.126 left the chat 7 seconds ago
checkers: yes, they could certainly be younger
rowana: Yes, I thought in The Thief, Irene was closer to 21, but 23 seems more accurate, considering the fact that helen is younger and is meant to have seven years of legal reforms under her belt.
anon8: yeah, that's the part that gets me: they must have inherited the throne in their teens...and lost their parents/older brothers even earlier
rowana: ...I think the Magus said something about the length of Helen's reign in QoA
anon8: 7 years
fabricalchemist from x.x.x.61 left the chat 14 seconds ago
anon8: 5 by the end of the Thief
checkers: we could ask MWT, but it's so fun to argue about it.
anon8: yeah, much better to picture it for ourselves
rowana: Yes, they do things pretty young. Helen must have been around 14 or 15 when she came to the throne.
rowana: :) Very true.
anon8: yeah
checkers: Same with Irene, don't you think?
anon8: well, that's marrying age back then
rowana: Yes. She's older because she came to the throne earlier.
anon8: yeah, same with Irene, maybe closer to 14 cuz she talks about being nearly a child when she inherited
rowana: There's a point with the differences and similarities between Helen and Irene. MWT did say that Eddis was perfect, which is really true.
anon8: haha, she can have a broken nose and still be considered beautiful by all her people and Sounis
rowana: Irene definitely isn't perfect. But neither is gen. What did you guys make of that biit about whether Gen was kind or not, towards the end of the book?
anon8: this is a question I wanted to ask Megan: are the names symbolic? like, Helen's not a famed beauty but Sounis does fight for her hand
checkers: which book?
anon8: KofA
rowana: Yes, Eddis is cool like that. :)
rowana: True. I think the names definitely have connotations which are meant to catch us.
anon8: so Eugenides is "the wellborn" which totally fits, but Irene is "peace", so................
checkers: Only the queen's names were ones we are really familiar with
rowana: Like Hestia being an old roman goddess
rowana: But Eugenides could easily be a name from this world. Euguene means something similar I think - I know Eugenics is the study of birth
rowana: ..or genetics. Or something.
anon8: Eugene DOES mean "wellborn"
anon8: *guiltily* I looked it up
checkers: ok, I was wondering
rowana: :D
checkers: how you knew :)
checkers: well, guys, I need to go. It's been nice
rowana: I'd better get going.
anon8: see you guys soon :D
anon8: bye Checkers, bye Ro
checkers: Bye!
rowana: Spooky how we all seem to need to leave at the same time. I'll post the transcript tomorrow. :)
anon8: thanks :)
rowana: Bye!

Twilight (Iris): no one around?
Twilight (Iris): and here i was thinking that there was a chat scheduled!

rowana: I think everyone forgot again.
rowana: Yes?
Twilight (Iris): hmm
Twilight (Iris): ooo
Twilight (Iris): Noonenes

Twilight (Iris): edit: Reading

rowana: As in, 'where're you up to'?
rowana: though it's nice to know what you're up to too. :)
Twilight (Iris): erm im around the part where Gen is suicidal, Sophos is a manic depressive and the Magus is trying to be the heroic Martyr
rowana: :D
rowana: 'Sophos the manic depressive' *falls off chair*
Twilight (Iris): I.e. theyre escaping from the attolian prison ^^
rowana: Ah! I thought he was more wistful then, that was the bit where Gen had to tell him to shut up?
Twilight (Iris): ...
Twilight (Iris): Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
rowana: :D
rowana: I'm right. Again.
Twilight (Iris): erm...
rowana: Oh, have you read all the suggestions for the game?
Twilight (Iris): as interested by that LJ post about fencing...who did that
rowana: I created a handy post a while ago to collect them.
Twilight (Iris): was*
Twilight (Iris): hmm ill read through the suggestions...
rowana: Can't remember. Someone clever. :) It was a comment on Checkers' post, I think.
Twilight (Iris): and i'll try my best
Twilight (Iris): and if my best isnt enogh ...
Twilight (Iris): we go to the block together
rowana: you die
Twilight (Iris): :S
rowana: stampeded by hordes of raving fangirls
Twilight (Iris): ... oh deers
rowana: Nice quote. I'm liking teh linkage. :)
rowana: Typots strike again.
Twilight (Iris): ^^
Twilight (Iris): BUAHAHAH!
Twilight (Iris): The Phantom Typot
rowana: :D
Twilight (Iris): The Attack Of The Typots
Twilight (Iris): The Revenge Of The Typots
rowana: stop.
Twilight (Iris): A New Typot
rowana: Stop now.
Twilight (Iris): The Typot Strikes Back
Twilight (Iris): The Return Of The Typot
rowana: ...
rowana: *beats head against wall*
rowana: ...right
rowana: no more quotes, or links
rowana: Let's talk more about the game
Twilight (Iris): fine
rowana: good
Twilight (Iris): i shall keep Star Wars well away from the Thief...well Gen with a Lightsaber...AHEM moving on
rowana: Sacrilege!
rowana: ...actually
Twilight (Iris): Falchion then :(
Twilight (Iris): in all its curviness
rowana: More like it
rowana: But you have to read QoA!
Twilight (Iris): QoA ism
Twilight (Iris): !!!
rowana: ?
Twilight (Iris): nothing ^^
rowana: Have you ever heard that Discworld quote:
rowana: "Many exclamation marks is a sure sign of insanity"
Twilight (Iris): :S
rowana: Be afraid.
Twilight (Iris): Ro...you seen that game i suggested to you? the one which i wanna use as a style base for the Game
rowana: Yes, the ronin one? I have the screencaps saved of the good bits, but you really need to talk to some artsy people about drawing them for you
Twilight (Iris): ooooooooohhhhh
rowana: Yes
Twilight (Iris): hos that 1 u told me about
Twilight (Iris): cloth pharmacist?
rowana: er, fabricalchemist?
rowana: What!?
Twilight (Iris): thats the one!
rowana: Are we speaking different languages?
Twilight (Iris): noooo
rowana: oookay...
Twilight (Iris): Ja
rowana: *edges away*
Twilight (Iris): Nein!
rowana: How many levels are you thinking of btw, for the game
Twilight (Iris): ...
Twilight (Iris): rm
Twilight (Iris): erm*
Twilight (Iris): YPOT!
Twilight (Iris): TYPOT*
rowana: *sighs*
Twilight (Iris): im just gettng into the feeling Ro...God!
rowana: *radiates exasperation*
rowana: I've just had a thought
Twilight (Iris): dont hate me cos i intergrate! *Z SMNAP*
rowana: I've given up trying to understand your language.
Twilight (Iris): its filled with Typots
Twilight (Iris): hmmm
rowana: ...
Twilight (Iris): we could call it Pottish
rowana: isn't the point of coherent language to avoid typots?
rowana: *goes looking for that handy wall again*
Twilight (Iris): typos ro...theyre called typos in your inferior form of speech! Puuh!
rowana: Right!
rowana: No more tangents!
rowana: The game!! Now!!!
Twilight (Iris): Typos*
Twilight (Iris): ok game
rowana: Yes. Good.
Twilight (Iris): level 1 would be
Twilight (Iris): Seal Ringage!
rowana: Gen sneaking around the palace to find the ring
Twilight (Iris): yep
rowana: to translate from Pottish
Twilight (Iris): oi ypou lebve ofgf myt langhuage
rowana: *hates you*
Twilight (Iris): *hugs*
rowana: :P
Twilight (Iris): ^^
rowana: I would tell you to grow up now, but I just stuck my tongue out, and would feel a bit hypocritical
Twilight (Iris): ...
rowana: Yes. The game
Twilight (Iris): yeeeees because we're not 3 yr olds in adolescent bodies!
rowana: Second level. I think it was CBjen's great suggestions - to have Gen sneaking around the inn to find food
Twilight (Iris): hmm
rowana: Speak for yourself. Adolescent. *sniffs*
Twilight (Iris): ...fine
Twilight (Iris): ure not a 3 yr old in a 3 yr olds body
Twilight (Iris): ok level 2
rowana: ...
rowana: How did you know? ;)
Twilight (Iris): hmm
rowana: Maybe we could have a level where you have to classify trees
rowana: fannish, and educational. :D
rowana: Wait, what about the whole copyright thing.
rowana: I wanted to ask someone this. Will someone sue us if we make this game?
Twilight (Iris): My parrot Suku says: How about a mathematical formula which would help you to equate the root of all ideas, use this to produce amazing ideas for games!
Twilight (Iris): ah
Twilight (Iris): copyright...
rowana: ...what
Twilight (Iris): hmm
rowana: ??
rowana: I think I should email MWT and ask her very nicely
Twilight (Iris): what ill do is...we will of course ask Ms Turner, but for now i wont put any comparison to the Thief onto the game with logos etc
Twilight (Iris): and were not making any money from it are we? its just gonna be a flash webgame
rowana: true
Twilight (Iris): if worst comes to worst Miss Megan (who writes rocking books BTW) will take us to the Gallows Pole
rowana: wait...we're going to have a logo?
Twilight (Iris): which isnt so bad
rowana: You could ask octopirock if you could use her cool badge
Twilight (Iris): she could use red hot ions
rowana: I'm sure Megan wouldn't want to hang us.
rowana: We could always offer to babysit as compensation. :)
Twilight (Iris): ah logo, no what i said was we wont put anything that says "The Thief" on it
rowana: okay.
Twilight (Iris): you no, im not too sure about me though *gulp*
Twilight (Iris): ok level 2
rowana: *rolls eyes*
rowana: yes...
rowana: we need to talk about the mechanics more
Twilight (Iris): thres just a whole loada travelling in between
rowana: what will the characters be able to do, what will the animation look like?
Twilight (Iris): lets finish talking bout the levels first
rowana: Yes, but that could be...running away from goats?
rowana: er, trying to collect olives in the sea of olives?
Twilight (Iris): erm...
Twilight (Iris): wait
rowana: Yes, levels
rowana: ?
Twilight (Iris): that barmaid who gave him the hair tie and that wierd level
Twilight (Iris): we could start it from there
Twilight (Iris): what happened when they lefT?
Twilight (Iris): good i left the copy of the Thief at ur house so ur gonna have to remind me
rowana: they...travelled?
rowana: Gen had to stay on a horse
rowana: um, they stopped at other places
Twilight from x.x.x.126 joined the chat 3 seconds ago
rowana: You really need to ask CBjen and everyone else. They have great level ideas. There was a good suggestion from someone a while ago for some of the detail for the maze level.
Twilight: ... just had a nasty thouight
Twilight: you think that maybe they dont know we’ve gone forward an hour?
rowana: ...bollocks.
Twilight: oh geez Ro...filthy mouth!
rowana: That would be why no one else's here. :D
rowana: It's my fault, I should have written 10-11 GMT time in the post, cos we're six hours ahead instead of five hours ahead now.
Twilight: tu tut
rowana: Ah well, people will start showing in about 15 mins then
rowana: :D oh well.
checkers from x.x.x.91 joined the chat 7 seconds ago
checkers: hello guys
Twilight: oh nuts
rowana: Checkers! Hey :)
Twilight: dont scroll up!
checkers: what's up?
checkers: too late :)
Twilight: randomness
checkers: how are you all?
rowana: Er, we got the time mixed up. Our clocks went forward a while ago, so we've been hanging otu for an hour
Twilight: bah
Twilight: been rumbled Ro
rowana: it's been fun. :) Good. How're you?
checkers: oh no! our clocks go forward tonight
checkers: i'm ok, you?
anon8 from x.x.x.179 joined the chat 4 seconds ago
Twilight: great!...i knew we shouldve done this tomorrow ^^
checkers: that's ok. hi anon!
rowana: Been enjoying the start of my Easter holiday.
anon8: hi everybody!
rowana: Hey anon
Twilight: Anon anon, hello
anon8: hi iris
Twilight: :D
rowana: We've just been discussing the game and whether we might get sued for it
Twilight: ...youll get sued...ill be hung :P
rowana: *rolls eyes*
checkers: hmmm, good point. I don't think so, but emwit would be the one to ask permission from, I guess
Twilight: tis the gallows pole for me, and the hangman/woman is MWT
checkers: my, aren't we dramatic
rowana: True. :) I'll write a nice email.
Twilight: hahaha...Ro just phoned me to tell me to grow up ^^
Twilight: i will
checkers: hahaha
rowana: ...
checkers: let him be, Ro. without fabricalchemist, we need humor
rowana: :) True
checkers: where has she gone, do you know?
Twilight: humor? i considered myself as more of a jester...more laughing at than with
Twilight: but anyways, to business
rowana: I thought fabrical chemist was meant to be back last thursday
checkers: we can laugh at you, if you like. i thought so, too
checkers: she is shunning us
rowana: ...yes, to business. :)
checkers: *pouts*
rowana: Court Jester?
checkers: yes, business
anon8: okay, finished reading backlogs :D
rowana: I think she thought the chat was yesterday
Twilight: ...i already have that title in another community, dont force me to do it!
rowana: You brought it upon yourself. ;) Yes, you were saying something about teh animation?
Twilight: we were?
Twilight: level 2 i thought
Twilight: or level 3 yes
rowana: You were. Or levels, yes.
rowana: Yep. ideas for level three? This is after the 'stealing the king's seal' level, and the 'stealing food from the inn' level.
rowana: Perhaps there should be one in between.
checkers: ok. what's next?
anon8: getting the food back from the Magus
Twilight: ..."stealing time in the prison" level?
rowana: Doesn't he just eat the oranges in his pocket?
anon8: well, yeah, but he does want his lunch back
rowana: Although, staying entirely true to the book isn't an option, so yeah, getting food from the magus is definitely an idea.
rowana: :) True
anon8: or maybe just staying on the horse? while trotting?
Twilight: a whole level on that?
Twilight: yeh
Twilight: horse riding
Twilight: ok so u got adventure tutorial which is the seal ring level
anon8: mmm, well, maybe as something to do in addition to__________
rowana: perhaps something about keeping his horse on course. Except it was a pack horse.
Twilight: then riding tutorial
rowana: This is more difficult than i thought.
checkers: true. it never strayed
rowana: :) We're going to have to skip large chunks of the book where there's no action.
anon8: well, if you really don't follow canon, you could have him trying to knock Ambiades off his horse while not getting caught and while staying on his
rowana: Perhaps you could dedicate three levels to the maze? One for every night?
Twilight: perfect ^^
checkers: how many levels do you think we'll have?
checkers: that might help decide what to have in each one
Twilight: 15 ish
rowana: Nice idea anon :)
Twilight: maybe less
anon8: wow
rowana: 15? Isn't that a bit muchy?
rowana: Gah. typots.
Twilight: maybe less
checkers: ha
Twilight: dont get me started on pottish
checkers: pottish?
Twilight: right so we have 3 levels now
anon8: is the "finish" getting out of the maze alive w/ Hamiathes's gift, or getting back to Eddis?
rowana: Typot language. Me and Iris had an interesting discussion
checkers: :) I would thing the end would have to be getting back to Eddis. a level could be getting across the river
Twilight: erm, i still havnt finished but the final level would definitely be after they get out of the attolian prison
rowana: I think being chased by Attolia's guards would be a good level, so the finish should probably be where the book ends
anon8: sounds good
rowana: Yep.
checkers: when you say you havent's finished, Iris, do you mean you still haven't finished the BOOK?
rowana: :)
rowana: Yes Iris. Why haven't you finished the book?
checkers: Come on! Get with it!
Twilight: shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....MWT might hear you!....*whispers* im at the bit where Gen is Suicidal, Sophos is a manic depressant and the magus is trying to be a heroic martyr
anon8: finish it! soon!
rowana: You're close to the end now, right?
rowana: We can't ruin it for you. :)
anon8: oh, okay
checkers: I love your description. :)
rowana: You said that before. I'm still not seeing Sophos as a manic depressive.
Twilight: Pol is dead :( he reminded me so much of my IT tutor
anon8: yeah, me neither
anon8: not getting the manic part of the depressent
anon8: he's chatting about his sisters
rowana: :) I'm not really getting the depressent part of the manic.
checkers: well, he's sad because Pol is dead...
rowana: Oh right! Depressent is accurate then.
Twilight: erm...fine then...hes a ninny! which one do you want Sophos the girl or Shophos the mourner?
rowana: Sophos does seem to grow up towards the end. It seems to bode well for his future.
anon8: he still can't stop blushing
Twilight: ^^
checkers: maybe he outgrows that
Twilight: Sophos the radiator
rowana: ...
checkers: :)
rowana: Why the radiator?
anon8: he must be fair-skinned
checkers: I picture him as blond, do you think? like the king
Twilight: blushing usually means that blood rushes to your cheeks Ro
Twilight: ...erm, i more saw sophos as...actually yes a kind of blonde
rowana: Yes, but I always saw him as being short, like Gen too. Very thin.
anon8: YES
rowana: :P
Twilight: :P
anon8: shorter than Gen, but mostly cuz he's younger
Twilight: *mind link*
rowana: Stop. Yes, Sophos seemed quite frail
checkers: you two are scaring me
rowana: Not, frail, but...
checkers: frail? I suppose
rowana: He started it. *pouts* ;)
Twilight: nooo Sophos seems as if he could be chucked under a pile of bricks and wouldnt die, not that i would want to
rowana: Do you guys think Sophos will end up outgrowing Gen?
Twilight: yes
checkers: Yes, definitely
anon8: yes
anon8: though his uncle the king is rather short...so, you never know
rowana: Sophos seems the typs of tall, thin, fair person whom people tend to ignore
checkers: i picture him coming back all Greek-goddish and changed
rowana: wow
Twilight: ...
checkers: :)
rowana: It'd be nice. :)
checkers: then again, maybe not
rowana: I dunno, I think after KoA, that's one of the options
rowana: So it could happen. Perhaps not entirely Greek-goddish, but certainly changed.
anon8: yeah, but I liked him the way he was, sweet and a little naive
anon8: though I'm guessing he's no longer naive
rowana: Yes. But I wonder what his position is with the rebels. Either way, not naive any more.
Twilight: i would love to see Sophos towering over Gen asking him if he wanted a comb and being shunned away :D (ive only read the thief dont know how he develops further)
checkers: very sweet, especially for someone who was raised as the king's possible...wait a minute. Iris hasn't finished the book
anon8: okay, hold discussion on stuff after where Iris had read
rowana: Oh yes, sorry Iris.
rowana: More incentive to get reading. :)
Twilight: no its k ^^ i have no long term memory ...im a crammer, need to write things down if i want to remember them after 2 days
checkers: yo, empmai is here. come on in!
rowana: Empmai! Hey :) Join the chat
checkers: we were talking about Sophos and how he might have changed when we see him next
rowana: Er, fabricalchemist just came online on yahoo
Twilight: y'know the bit where Gen steals the stone then runs...strangely enough the song dont stop me now" came on the radio just as he started running
rowana: *goes to drag her in*
checkers: im her and tell her to get over here
Twilight: thats irrelavant tho :P
checkers: how freaky, though
anon8: yeah
Twilight: i knw :S
checkers: i cna't listen to music while I read
anon8: me neither
anon8: unless it's classical or new age, no words
Twilight: it was mercury FM: i.e. voices and then suddenly...music!
checkers: maybe once you trun the music off, Iris, you;ll be able to finish the book. :)
checkers: no pressure, though
Twilight: ohhhh....meh
checkers: :)
checkers: are you feeling ganged up on, yet?
Twilight: ah
rowana: :)
Twilight: but when im not reading im making your game my friend
checkers: ah, true. forgive me.
Twilight: (thats a horrible lie)
rowana: *sighs*

anon8: hi Bear!
rowana: Hey
fabricalchemist: Hey
