Breaking News

Passing along a message from Megan Whalen Turner:

I am going to be at the Kepler's Bookstore in beautiful Menlo Park, California at 3:00 pm, this Thursday July 16.

If there's anyone who'd like to feed my latte habit, I'd be glad to chat.  This isn't official.  I doubt that Kepler's will even know I am there, and if you can't find me, look next door at the Cafe Berrone.

I am going to be in Berkely through next week.  I'd hang out in a bookstore here, if there were one.  Cody's is gone.  Black Oak is gone.  If someone can suggest a store still standing, maybe I'll set something up in the East Bay, too, but I will definitely be at Kepler's the day after tomorrow.

Megan

Edit: Here's Kepler's Books' website, if you need directions.

Go, fangirls/boys.  Discuss.  Who gets to go?

Auggh. If I'd had more notice I would have hied my heinie up there to worship at the shrinetry to meet the estimable Ms. Turner. Rats. NoCal people have all the fun.

Sort of OT, though: WHAT?! Black Oak Books is gone?! It was there in mid-May when I last visited Berkeley - what the heck happened? I know they were trying to find a new space, but now it's gone altogether? The Bay Area used to be such a mecca for independent bookstores, and now all the great ones are gone. This totally sucks. I guess City Lights is the only holdout, and when that goes all hope is lost. :(

THIS IS SO UNFAIR.

IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT, I AM IN CALIFORNIA RIGHT NOW. ON A FREAKING ISLAND, AND UNABLE TO GET TO ANY BOOKSTORE BUT THE ONE HERE. WHICH IS NOT THE ONE MWT WILL BE AT.

THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wheeeee!

I attend a summer Latin course at UC Berkeley, for which I get up at six three days a week. I also take two forms of public transportation to get there, not being of driving age and also being a champion for the environment (note username). But this news makes all that worthwhile!!!

*Almost faints from excitement/the 89 degree weather*

Not being from Berkeley, I don't know of any bookstores there, besides the totally customer-unfriendly one where I got my textbooks...

I have a suggestion, savetheworld42 (and octopirock) -

If you don't easily find her in the bookstore, go to the counter and asked to have her paged ("would Megan Turner please meet her party in the Young Adult section - or coffee shop, or front desk, or where ever")

then you don't spend all your time playing hide and go seek in the stacks.

If I had a car, or money, or magical powers, I WOULD SO BE THERE. *ponders other options*

Chatting with Megan Whalen Turner, in a bookstore, in gorgeous northern California. What a concept.

My sister used to live in Palo Alto, which is right next to Menlo Park. It really is beautiful. Too bad my sister moved, although San Diego wasn't too shabby a relocation.

I hope anyone who can go has a marvelous time (and writes about it). I so wish I could go.

Well, now is as good a time as any for that teleporter! *heads off to tinker with things*

I was thinking that same thing, but I'd like to modify my van with teleporting capability. Do I need a flux capacitor?

From: [identity profile] philippas.livejournal.com
Yes, you need a flux capacitor. Also a molecule alignment inhibitor, not to mention a trans-dimensional director beam.

I'm pretty sure that's for time travel, not teleporting. Although maybe if you rewire it...

Yay! We can do a meet-up at Sea World! ;D

Now I can stop obsessing on rearranging my reality so I can be in Menlo Park on Thursday.

No, no, not at Sea World! You'll have to find a bookstore. One with a cafe next door.

Okay -- I was joking anyway. I'm sure we can find several great bookstores in San Diego. We've got time. :^)

!!!!!!!!!!!!

*rushes off to 511.org*

Well, if BART doesn't strike, and Caltrans runs when they say they run, and my teacher doesn't decide to let us out late, then I might be able to go after class. Hopefully. *crosses fingers that all the ifs come together*

So sad about Cody's. Last time I checked, Moe's on Telegraph is still standing. There's also Other Change of Hobbit, on Shattuck, one block away from the Berkeley BART station, but they don't have much standing/sitting room.

*sigh,* wish I wasn't so far away
