Nicely done! I like the hair, and I'm also very taken with the wrinkles on the coat - it takes a lot of work to make those look realistic.

One note - doesn't Gen have more olive-ish skin? 'cause he's Eddisian? He seems a little pale.

Thank you so much!! :D And yes, his skin should be darker (did we ever figure out exactly HOW dark? Like, exactly who the Eddisians are?) but for some reason, it scanned in lighter than I drew it. DX

I don't know if they're a 'who' - I don't think they match up to any specific culture. Their soldier-based society has once or twice made me think of the Spartans, but MWT has said that the accent is almost Scottish (I have an idea of how this sounds but I'm going to practice and refine it a bit before deciding). I assume that, like everything in these books, their culture is taken from many different historical sources, not to mention the prestigous imagination of MWT.

Looks pretty olive to me. Eddisians are darker than the Sounisians and Attolians, but that's a relative measure. I don't see how we can figure out *how* dark, unless MWT decides to tell us 'by the way, Eddisians are a nice shade of russet-y ochre'.

I like the hair, like everyone else. Oddly enough, I also like his eyebrow and fingernails. the detail is lovely. And I like how you've matched his clothes to the description in TT.

I'm in the process of teaching myself to draw and I admire anyone who tries fanart. The braid really is cool, by the way.

That's the one I have, as well. The one that most inspired my picture of Gen is actually the QoA boat cover (he does NOT look like a rapist, guys), except younger. I guess he changes a lot in my mind. He always has longish black hair (and it's only marginally shorter after he cuts it - I have a thing for guys with long hair, and my mind refuses to listen to canon on this point). The only times he doesn't is when I'm having trouble picturing a scene and have to picture it expression-by-expression with people I know in RL... then he's always CT or occasionally the guy on TA's "halfway to methana" icon.

Drawing advice:

1) Trace, and copy from photos. It will grind against your artistic sensibilities, but do it anyway; it improves your drawing like whoah.

2) Practice and repeat and repeat and repeat. Until you want to explode. Until you have pages and pages full of nothing but eyeballs, or noses, or lips.

3) LET THE IMAGINATION RUN WILD. LIKE A GOOSE AMONGST THE WILDFLOWERS! *is shot*

No, seriously; I wish you the best of luck, and hope the advice helps (it was imparted to me by my artist mother. Many, many times. I have so many pages full of nothing but noses, you have no idea. D:)

The thing about tracing is; your fingers remember the correct shapes.

For example, when you're first learning, even if you try to copy a photo freehand, it won't come out correctly. A tracing won't be perfect, either, but the proportions will be much more correct, and once you've drawn them, your fingers will remember them. It will be much easier the second time around. It also help give confidence in drawing the correct lines, as well as with muscle distinction, etc.

I'm saying this because it helped me a great deal, and it never handicapped me. Of course, each person learns differently, as well!

There's a whole conspiracy of people who think that the US QoA Gen looks like a rapist. However, this isn't right because there are two versions of that cover, one where he does and one where he doesn't. The one where he doesn't is nice.

Part of why I feel so strongly about it is I've seen it handicap a couple of my other classmates. It may be a good tool at the very beginning, but too soon and too easily it can become a crutch. But if you can do it to learn and then be able to drop it and still draw, more power to you.
