I love my bookgroup. There are nine to twelve participants every month, ranging from mid-twenties to early forties, with fairly equal gender split. It's an amazing bookgroup and I wouldn't miss it for anything; I will even stoop to reading crappy books as long as I can go to bookgroup and talk about them.

This month, my sister and I chose Queen of Attolia (not on my crappy book list, in case you were wondering) for the group to read, which is really our sneaky way of getting everyone to read the whole series since one has to read The Thief first. Of course, everyone will want to read King of Attolia once they've finished QoA.

Judging from the number of agitated phone calls I've received over the past two weeks from group members who've just reached the chopchop part, I'm fairly confident this is going to be our most exciting and heated bookgroup meeting yet. The latest call came just this evening from a person who was actually sobbing over the phone and telling me how she has never reacted to a book in this manner before and how Gen is one of her favorite characters in all of literature and how can this be happening and I HATE Attolia, HATE HATE HATE, I hope she really gets it in the end.*

Ahem.

It promises to be a very interesting bookgroup meeting indeed. I'm gonna sit back and just watch.

*I did empathize ("I know! It's horrible! I didn't want that to happen either! He's one of my favorites, too!") and console her ("It's going to be okay, I promise! Just keep going!") and all those good things. But I'm still gonna take popcorn to the meeting and enjoy the the show.

Good for you! You'll have a dozen converts, for sure. :D

Be sure to report back what goes on at the meeting. I'd love to hear how the discussion plays out.

You are by far the sneakiest, wiliest, brattiest member of my acquaintance. I'm proud to call you my role model.

Oh yes, I second this. We must hear about the discussion. Why not just record it for us, huh? Muwahaha!

Ha! Funny. I was seconding kate's comment about hearing the discussion, not philippas' about being sneaky, wily and bratty. I AM going to call you my role model now, though.

Me too. I worried that that made me sadistic or something... but as I read, reread, and rereread, I realized that the writing made it into a much more multi-layered event.

Actually, I was hooked a few pages before that, when Gen gets captured and there's the great dialogue between him and Irene. Because she's so sarcastic, but he's completely serious (that it's a pleasure to see her), even though he knows she's going to do something terrible and...

sounds exciting! thirds the follow up!

humm I don't know will I even react that deeply to the chopping part if I started QoA first; like there wasn't even enough time to bond with Gen.
I just remember I read that line, stop a moment, reread it again and again and Oh, con't reading while pretending it didn't happen.

"MWT pretty much hooked me for life in that moment."

Um, yeah, hooked Gen for life in that moment too.

LOL. That girl crying on the phone - is she some twin I never knew I had?

XD I cried for twenty minutes, and felt sick afterward. It, like, shattered my sensitive, 12-year-old psyche. DXX

My mom read the book afterward as well; she felt horrified too.

SO TELL THEM THEY HAVE SUPPORTERS. *_*

considering I'm fairly sure I somehow read the last page of QoA first, and hadn't read TT, I had a pretty strong reaction to the chopchop bit, as my adolescent mind was boggled about how one can have good feelings for their be-hander.

I am very excited to hear the 9-12 member responses to the book.

Hate... Attolia...?

*death stare*

The "chop-chop" made me sad too, but my reaction was more like, "Poor Attolia! The guilt is going haunt her like a vengeful wraith. Poor Gen! What will he do now! I'm so sad for these two." Then I got really depressed, and I had to go eat ice cream.

Does that make me a traitor? I just really love Irene and Gen, both. Ever since I first meet her.

Maybe it was because I figured her obsession with caching him had something to do with that she loved him but didn't realizes it yet. I saw that underneath the ice she had an overwhelming desire to be loved by someone, who put her safety and happiness above money and power.

After you pat your weeping friend on the back (I forgive her for hating Irene, because she does it out of love for Gen.), have her read my fic, "The Moonlight Advisor". It about Irene's feelings just after the "chop-chop" part. It's not too awful, I hope. It's part of my 'in defense of Irene' campaign.

Hmm now THIS will be considered traitorous.

When I read that scene I had no reaction except for "Oh no, she cut of his hand, oh well I knew this was coming since I looked at wikipedia before reading. *whistles off*"

OK OK I'M SORRY, PLEASE DON'T GLARE AT ME. I WAS STILL SOBBING FOR HIM ON THE INSIDE ANYWAY. *begs*

For some reason though I sympathized for Eddis during that part. Blaming herself for sending Gen and all.

Yay, new readers. I thought of starting a bookgroup but I do not have any means to execute that plan. I will just have to poke and prod people and get them to read the books but Yuki and my friends will probably stop me mid-way of convincing them and warn potential readers that they will have to deal with my hyperactivity if they read the series.

What a great book group! Please tell me what questions you use to start discussions; I'm starting a book group of my own, and I'm nervous that the conversation will fall flat. (We chose to read 1984 because we figured we would have a lot to say, and also because there's guaranteed to be a copy of it in every library. Did everyone have to buy copies of the Queen's Thief series in your book club?)
