I love my bookgroup. There are nine to twelve participants every month, ranging from mid-twenties to early forties, with fairly equal gender split. It's an amazing bookgroup and I wouldn't miss it for anything; I will even stoop to reading crappy books as long as I can go to bookgroup and talk about them.
This month, my sister and I chose Queen of Attolia (not on my crappy book list, in case you were wondering) for the group to read, which is really our sneaky way of getting everyone to read the whole series since one has to read The Thief first. Of course, everyone will want to read King of Attolia once they've finished QoA.
Judging from the number of agitated phone calls I've received over the past two weeks from group members who've just reached the chopchop part, I'm fairly confident this is going to be our most exciting and heated bookgroup meeting yet. The latest call came just this evening from a person who was actually sobbing over the phone and telling me how she has never reacted to a book in this manner before and how Gen is one of her favorite characters in all of literature and how can this be happening and I HATE Attolia, HATE HATE HATE, I hope she really gets it in the end.*
Ahem.
It promises to be a very interesting bookgroup meeting indeed. I'm gonna sit back and just watch.
*I did empathize ("I know! It's horrible! I didn't want that to happen either! He's one of my favorites, too!") and console her ("It's going to be okay, I promise! Just keep going!") and all those good things. But I'm still gonna take popcorn to the meeting and enjoy the the show.

Date: 7/20/09 05:03 am (UTC)Actually, I was hooked a few pages before that, when Gen gets captured and there's the great dialogue between him and Irene. Because she's so sarcastic, but he's completely serious (that it's a pleasure to see her), even though he knows she's going to do something terrible and...

Date: 7/20/09 04:14 am (UTC)humm I don't know will I even react that deeply to the chopping part if I started QoA first; like there wasn't even enough time to bond with Gen.
I just remember I read that line, stop a moment, reread it again and again and Oh, con't reading while pretending it didn't happen.

Date: 7/20/09 04:39 am (UTC)XD I cried for twenty minutes, and felt sick afterward. It, like, shattered my sensitive, 12-year-old psyche. DXX
My mom read the book afterward as well; she felt horrified too.
SO TELL THEM THEY HAVE SUPPORTERS. *_*

The "chop-chop" made me sad too, but my reaction was more like, "Poor Attolia! The guilt is going haunt her like a vengeful wraith. Poor Gen! What will he do now! I'm so sad for these two." Then I got really depressed, and I had to go eat ice cream.
Does that make me a traitor? I just really love Irene and Gen, both. Ever since I first meet her.
Maybe it was because I figured her obsession with caching him had something to do with that she loved him but didn't realizes it yet. I saw that underneath the ice she had an overwhelming desire to be loved by someone, who put her safety and happiness above money and power.
After you pat your weeping friend on the back (I forgive her for hating Irene, because she does it out of love for Gen.), have her read my fic, "The Moonlight Advisor". It about Irene's feelings just after the "chop-chop" part. It's not too awful, I hope. It's part of my 'in defense of Irene' campaign.

Date: 7/20/09 08:37 am (UTC)When I read that scene I had no reaction except for "Oh no, she cut of his hand, oh well I knew this was coming since I looked at wikipedia before reading. *whistles off*"
OK OK I'M SORRY, PLEASE DON'T GLARE AT ME. I WAS STILL SOBBING FOR HIM ON THE INSIDE ANYWAY. *begs*
For some reason though I sympathized for Eddis during that part. Blaming herself for sending Gen and all.
