So what with all the steam slowly but surely building in anticipation of "Conspiracy of Kings" it just occurred to me to wonder if anyone had started formulating ideas for parties/get-togethers, etc., for the book's release. (It's early, yes, but I don't think I need to defend my enthusiasm here!) I know that I'd love to attend something in the New York/tri-state area, and if other local Sounisians would be interested we could work out a mutually convenient Barnes and Nobel's, Borders, Books of Wonder, whatever, to convene. Even if we just met up on the 23rd to squeal and take pictures with our shiny-awesome new copies of the book, it would still be pretty fun ;-)

And folks in other continental or global locations can of course hop in here to see if there's other plans going on in their areas as well! We can make a new slogan: Sounis: Rocking and shocking bookstores around the world, Thief style!

Hey, Checkers, what do you think of Catching Fire? Pro or con? Team Gale or Team Peeta?

I have heard such mixed reviews about that book, and my own very mixed feelings want me to poll everybody about it now...

Ack, I just started it and am on...*goes to look*...page 17. So, I don't know yet. For some reason, the present tense narration--which I didn't even notice in the first book, was it there?--is hitting me like a hammer. I'll let you know.

Yep, the first one was in present too. That annoying short sentences present. It's one of the many reasons why I was hesitant about it when someone dumped it in my hands. :)

I JUST FINISHED THAT!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved it, no matter how much I'm mad at the author for putting her characters through all that when I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Hunger Games was one of the few books I love that I could get my dad really excited about - but for some reason he refuses to start Catching Fire until he's finished the book he's reading right now. Grrrrr.

Only thing I'm a little frusterated with is that she might do what so many authors do to resolve the "too-many-guys" thing... kill off one. That would STINK. Although, I must admit I have no idea who I'd chose...

Um, Peeta? Because cake decorating disguise skills kick butt all the way to District 1. :)

No, actually, I just find Gale really, really boring. But I hope they both survive to the end too.

From: [identity profile] thelasteddis.livejournal.com
Yeah, I guess I'd say Peeta... but I wouldn't say I think Gale is boring. I just think his character is less original.

Me and a friend from school are going to dress as Katniss and Peeta when the third book comes out - her as Katniss, me as Peeta.

From: [identity profile] traboule.livejournal.com
I'm torn between saying I want to dress up as Katniss, or that I want to dress up as Katniss only if I get her stylist. I want a dress that lights on fire.

I just finished Catching Fire too! I had a blast reading it--I actually ended up being even more engrossed than I was in The Hunger Games. My hand felt like it was permanently glued to my mouth in shock, and I lost count of the number of times I tried to set it down because my nerves couldn't take it anymore (even though I immediately picked it back up because not knowing what was going to happen was even worse.) Having read the previous book made this one a far more tense experience for me.

And I love Gale, but I confess I love Peeta more.

I know! I think I was hyperventilating through this one - and I didn't even like it very much. It was just really edge-of-your-seat exciting. What can they possibly do that they haven't done yet - OH, oh, I didn't think of that...

From: [identity profile] viviolo.livejournal.com
Oh God, that part. I actually started berating my copy at that point! ("No, NO! This is far too stressful for me to handle! TAKE IT BACK.")

Sorry you didn't like it so much though! I love it when a book makes me hyperventilate, but I do have odd tastes. What was your opinion on The Hunger Games?

I thought The Hunger Games was an original idea and extremely readable. If you'd tried to sell it to me - "well, it's all in present tense and it's about a dystopian future where a girl with a silly name has to compete in a televised battle-royale style gladiator contest" - I would have run the other way really, really fast. But someone I knew was raving about it, and I didn't really have anything to read, so I borrowed her copy and got sucked in with a huge, resounding gloop. I couldn't tell you why.

Over all though, I'm still not convinced either of them are really that good. Fun, but the characters and plotting is a bit weak.

I think this explains why I haven't read it yet, even though I keep meaning to.

I definitely agree. Hunger Games was a lot more fun. I don't think either one is particularly good, actually, but they are compulsively readable in a weird say. I do find the suspense...suspenseful. And I would love to see the Games where Katniss/Peeta/Gale take on Bella/Jacob/Edward. I think District Forks would last about 3 seconds and it would be great, in a really twisted way.

Good plan!!! Luckily, I'll be able to drive by then - so I can get myself to whatever party there'll be. I've been thinking about a release-day Seattle area meetup - so far the attendance is me and CT. Both in costume, of course. If there are any Seattlites out there, I can send update you on how that's working out.

Ok, I happen to be a little busy to make it to New York, so I'm just going to stake out the library. Roll on March!

But... are we sure there's going to be a formal release date? I marched into the biggest Borders I could find and had a conversation with the book-ordering person about when I might expect CofK to make it down here. He told me that, unless the book in question is a Very Commercially Important book like the later Harry Potters or Twilight, the 'release date' is actually the date that it's shipped from the publishers, not the date that it goes on to bookshop shelves. So never mind global location, the books still might not be available for a while after the 23rd.
(He told me to expect a two-month delay, but that's factoring in shipping. I guess in the US - and UK? - they'll be out on the shelves a lot sooner though. Don't worry guys.)

Are there any publishing-industry people around who have a better idea than me? Or could somebody ask Megan very nicely?

I was wondering what Sounis will do for the release, if we can nail down a date. Party time! :DDD
*starts stocking up on streamers and balloons for the Conspiracy Room*

PS: Two months??? Hamiathes' hiney. Amazon, I'm with you.

But I think Amazon would be simpler and faster, if I can't wangle myself a copy any other way.

I work in the Pub industry (Hi, sorry, I lurk here, but rarely contribute). Here's a bit of a run-down on release/pub dates.

- The release date is the date that the book gets "released" from the warehouse, or the day that the crates ship to book stores; how long it takes the books to actually reach a particular book store of course depends on how far that bookstore is from the distributor.

- The Publication/On-sale date, which is sometimes also referred to in press releases and the like, is always three weeks after the release date, and is basically when the publisher or distributor wants to be able to guarantee people that they'll be able to find the book in store.

- Usually, however, the book actually arrives in store much sooner than the actual publication date, although the bookstore might not put it on shelves until then. Frankly, though, like the Borders person said, unless the book has a "Dan Brown" or "Rowling" on the cover, they shelve it as soon as they get it. I've got my hands on books before the pub date numerous times, even for relatively high-profile YA titles like Artemis Fowl.

- The Greenwillow catalog cites the on sale date, not a release date (which is almost-certi-definitely March 2, three weeks before). I can't speak as to how Harper Collins distributes, since I haven't worked for them, but you might be able to find CoK in stores as early as 5 days after the release date. Don't get your hopes up too high, because shipping times vary, and even then it depends on the bookstore to get the books out.

In sum: look for the book on shelves or in the back before March 23rd, and not after.

Seems to me that I called B & N a couple of days before KoA was to come out and they said, "Oh, we have that here already." They hadn't put it out because it wasn't the official release date, but they pulled out a copy and sold it to me. Or maybe that was the PB with the extra story in it. I don't remember.

Doesn't Amazon ship on the book's release date?

I'm ignoring all the Catching Fire discussion until I finish. I'm 2/3 through and still not sure how I feel about it.

You have no idea how much this post just made my day. This is how an earlier conversation went (I was a little to excited to let the other person talk):

"...and then I'll lend you QoA and KoA, too, because you want to read those! And then the next book is coming out in March and you'll be just as excited as I am! And we can have our own mid-night opening party in front of a B&N with chocolate and hot chocolate and we can print out the new book's covers to make jackets for KoA and have readings! And we could...."

That sounds amazing!
