You folks may have already posted this kind of thing, but [livejournal.com profile] irrel and I were discussing possible choices for a hypothetical movie/tv cast, and I wanted input from others. Who would you cast for the various characters?

I had no idea who to pick for Gen, since I'm can't think of the names of many young actors in the 16-22 age range. I'd love to hear your ideas. And for Eddis, too! And the Magus, of course.

This is Katie McGrath from BBC's Merlin. She fits my mental picture of Attolia perfectly...dark dark hair, haughty looks, beautiful but potentially cruel.

Think of this as an excuse for picspams!

Jamie Bell is 23, and an excellent actor. Rollo Weeks is 22, but looks much younger.

I would have cast James McAvoy as Gen ten, or even five, years ago. Now though I'm afraid he's too old for the part.

Rollo Weeks (Cheri):

Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince):

I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier, but Skandar Keynes:

And I quite like Felicity Jones (Northanger Abbey, Brideshead Revisited) for Attolia:

The thing is... they all look like great actors, but none of them look a bit like Gen. :/ Sophos, maybe?

Yeah. Gen has dark(ish, at least) skin, right? I'm having trouble thinking of any actors who could match him.

HOLISHIT I never thought of her, but she would be brilliant as Attolia!!!!!! 8D I love her as Morgana....

Another pic of her:

Gen needs to be in his twenties at the OLDEST. In my mind, Ben Barnes more than fits the part, but again... too old. :(

Ben Barnes:

Jamie Bell is a great actor, but he looks nothing like Gen. A convincing Sophos, maybe, but I think he's too old. Same goes for Anton Yelchin.

Jamie:

Anton:

I can't remember whether Ambiades was darker or fairer than Sophos. D: Darker, right? In terms of hair color, and all. Maybe this is my Merlin obsession talking, but I'd love to include Colin Morgan somehow. XD Could an Irish boy pass for a Greek one? Yes? YES? Maybe? He's got skills, I'm pretty sure he could pull off being an arrogant twat.

Colin:

Well of course he's attractive *starts biased rant* he's Gen after all.

But seriously though, I think he kinda, sorta is, but it takes a second look to get the full effect of his awesomeness. Not in the conventional way, but in that striking way, you know, something about him makes you want to look twice. Then you see 'ah, he is attractive'. Well you know what I mean.

*cannot understand even herself*

The books never come right out and say it; I imagine him as cute, but not as pretty as Diego Luna. Ben Barnes has... thicker bones, almost?

I thin Colin is a sweet boy, but he could pull off an arrogant jerk as well - I was thinking Ambiades, not Gen, which is why I used the picture of him with the stink face. XD

OH MY GOD

YES

the only other time someone has gotten this close to my mental image of Attolia was a picture of Rachel Weis from that weird movie she made about the Tree with Hugh Jackman and now I totally forgot what it was called, but ANYWAY MORGANA IS EVEN MORE PERFECT, YESPLZ.

I think she looks a little young for Attolia in the second pic but I can see her like that dancing under the orange trees, maybe. Except sadder.

I would be more apt to say HOMG YES! That second one, where she's smiling...she seems too nice lol. But this pic reminds me of this wonderful piece or art

And what if instead of Gen, we said Skandar Keynes as Costis? I know he's a few years too young right now, but there is a certain naivete I think he has that would fit Costis well, for some reason. Yet, as we've seen in Narnia, he's also looks great in battle scenes and can kick some serious butt.

PS - I put Colin forward as Ambiades, but there's also this fellow, Frank Dillane, who impressed me GREATLY in the Half-Blood Prince (one of the few who did) with his subtlety as teen Voldemort, and would be old enough by the time a Thief movie was made:

AGREED

I LOVED HIM.

Same to Keynes as Costis.

I think Skandar is much too, scrawny. Liam Hemsworth would fill out that Atolian guards unifirm much better.

Morgana would be perfect. Merlin shows us that Katie McGrath can pull off superior and cold, as well as almost-nice. Yay!

And this isn't a suggestion for who to play Gen... but does KoA!Gen remind anyone else of Jack Sparrow? Especially in the taking-down-Erondites scene:

"'...but why would my brother try to poison you?'
'He didn't,' said the king, and when Dite stared at him at a loss, he explained, 'He confessed to protect you. He thought you put the quinalums in the lethium.'
'I didn't!' Dite protested.
'No,' said the king. 'I did.'"

And a little later on...

"...conspiring with your father to have them all dismissed, excepting himself, so that I could choose new attendents more to the liking of the Baron Erondites. With Sejanus's help, of course, and the help of the mistress the baron had picked out for me -- only I kept dancing with her sister -- who, by the way, has lovely earring."
Because no one has any idea what he's on about, but everyone is nodding and smiling.

Yeah, Viv! He's a great actor, right, which is more important than looks in many ways, but he also really looks like Gen to me. He can do all of Gen's moods and looks (and hair), plus he has the right physique. I will forever mourn not seeing him as Gen. He would be so good.

I LUV Hugh Laurie! He would be THE BEST Magus EVA!

Incidently there's a rumor going about that the hollywood nuts are considering a remake of My Fair Lady w/Keira Knightly as Liza (why they want to remake that film is beyond me. Its great as it is). Anyway I was thinking about who would make a good Prof. Higgins and I thought Hugh would be awesome.

I've been trying to fit Bettany into my fan cast for SO LONG. Which isn't the way it should work, but hey, he's a genius.

Did I mention that two guys at Once Upon a Mattress rehearsals are dead-on for Gen and Sophos? I was so excited. Alas, neither of them could be in the movie. Different schools. :-(

I really like the Joseph Gordon-Levitt suggestion. He's probably the first Gen choice that's clicked with me at all. And he's not all that old, is he? Hm. He probably is now that I think about it. Still -- there might be someone like him out there undiscovered. He can be the paradigm.

Months ago, I cast Kenneth Branagh as Sounis. Sticking with that one.

Love Paul Bettany, but I'm not sure I see him as Teleus for some reason. Maybe. He can play pretty much anything.

I don't know how to post a photo. *feels old and inept* :^(

From: [identity profile] tiegirl.livejournal.com
Hello, inept. We must be related. I AM old and inept. But I remember what Kenneth B. looks like (he is younger than I, I think) and he is perfect for Sounis. Just perfect.

He is perfect. I think it's the best casting choice I've ever come up with, LOL.

I think as far as Paul Bettany goes, I like him better for the magus. I could go for Hugh Laurie as Teleus. I can picture him falling in the fountain. Ha.

I've always like Christina Ricci for Attolia. She can play anything -- sweet, scary, evil, passionate -- the gamut. And she can look cold or hot at any given time. She gets my vote.

Liam Neesan or Aidan Quinn for Gen's father. Liam Neesan with the edge although they both do great "basilisk stares".

I'm going to ponder Helen a bit to see who I'd cast. She's a difficult one since she's supposed to be unattractive, yet a kind of siren as well. I'll probably obsess about this all day.

What about Anna Paquin as Helen?

I always thought Minnie Driver would make an excellent Helen. I love her acting, and I think she looks quite Eddisian.

My perfect Helen is practically anonymous. She's a local actress, who played Helena in All's Well That Ends Well. Except for the blond hair (which could be dyed), she looks great. Great smile, but not stunning-pretty.

Mark Indelicato (Ugly Betty) doesn't look exactly how I picture Gen, but he's reasonably close and good at slightly over-the-top acting, and I think he could fool the audience into believing he's just a Sounis-street thief. He's fifteen, which would be appropriate for Gen in the Thief.
