Currency

I'm stuck without my book copies, so I was wondering if anyone remembered what kind of currency they used in the Thief?  Was it the drachma?  Dinar? Something else?  And about how much would they have been worth - for example, how expensive would it have been to buy a watch using those monetary units?

THANKS GUYS. ^^'

In the Thief, it's "a cascade of double-heavy gold coins."

I don't think it's a type of currency specific to a country in our world, such as drachmas or dinars (dinari?). But it's specific to each country of the QT world, as far as I can tell... For instance, when a messenger brings news of Gen's fate to Eddis in QoA, she orders a "silver griffin" to be given to anyone else who brings the news today. (We know from the statuary in the throne room--I think???--that the griffin is the symbol of the Eddisian monarchy. This is all from memory. I'm without my books, too.) Later, in KoA, the coin the king tosses has Attolia's head on one side and the Attolian lilies on the reverse. So I'd assume each country mints its own currency, and so far MWT has avoided using a "name" for that currency...like drachma or dinar.

I think maybe coins in Attolia are called "queens" (since they have the queen's head on one side and the Attolian lilies on the other, which we know from KoA). Gen's intimidating cousins say that Ornon will owe them "three gold queens" (I believe) if they stay till noon--I don't have the page number for it, but I'm pretty sure that's how it goes. (This, I think, is analogous to the "sovereign," etc.)

I don't have my books immediately at hand, but I could have sworn it was "three gold crowns."

I finally got back to my room and checked; my copy (hardcover KoA) does say "three gold queens" (page 303). I feel like "crowns" works on the same principle, though.

I think Griffins are Eddisian, Queens are Attolian. But it's possible that any of the currencies would work in any country, because the value is the gold or silver, not the coin itself. Barter might be used in some smaller towns, where coins are harder to come by.

I should think Eddis would do something similar. I have no idea, though, if there are different denominations of coins, and if so, if they have different names...

Good question...Attolia has lilies, Eddis-griffins.

Hmmm, I wonder though, what did they use in Sounis?

Lions would be my guess. Lion gate and all.
