Greenwillow books posted a "teaser" for Conspiracy on Facebook recently.

The page can be found here. (I hope.)

Megan Whalen Turner’s A Conspiracy of Kings will release in just a few short months, and everyone at Greenwillow Books is excited to be working with Megan as she gives the text its finishing touches.

Would you like a glimpse?

“Yes, I am set, and I can see. Stop nagging,” said the younger man. With one foot on a narrow ledge and the other pressed against the chipped indentation, he was high enough to wrap his left hand around the narrow top of the marker. From this vantage point, he could see easily over the heads of the people gathered in the streets, and with a good grip for one hand, he had the other free. They had chosen the marker the day before because it offered a view up a long straight stretch of the Sacred Way and he would have plenty of time to aim.

Aim! It's the peashooter! Hee. (Unless it's something more sinister, of course...)

Thanks for posting the link. :)

Well, if it had been dancing bears it would have been 'paws'

I thought Sophos and Gen were together trying to peashoot someone. Sophos is climbing a wall, which presumably Gen taught him how to do even when drunk and Sophos has figured it out so wants Gen to stop nagging him.

Okay, okay, I've got it: Obviously Sophos has been away so long, that Helen has given up all hope, and decided to marry Sounis! When Sophos finds out, he knows he has to stop it, but when he gets there, he's too late! Helen is already walking down the aisle (er... the sacred way) to marry Sounis! Helen is out of hearing-range, but luckily she is still within peashooter-range. So Sophos climbs up on a ledge, and shoots her with a peashooter to get her attention. And the other guy with him is, uh... the Magus. XD

Yikes!!

You are brilliant, sandtree! But....do you think he's actually shooting peas? Perhaps diamonds? Wedding rings?

I actually wondered whether he could be shooting a secret message -- all crumpled up small, you know?

~D.

(Although....Isn't this supposed to be happening in Attolia?)

but the Sacred Way is in Eddis.

...unless there's one in Sounis too.

Oh, Geography!

I thought there was one in Sounis -- but I seem to remember from an earlier description that this happened in Attolia. But I could be SO wrong!

I can't wait for the book -- and the MAP that's going to be in it!!

Um, I think Sandtree has won the internet. This is my favorite theory EVER. Of course he's shooting Helen!! A pea-shooter is not exactly a lethal weapon, he totally wants to get her attention! Wow, I just love it, so cute and romantic!

(Though if he missed and hit the Minister of War instead, I think true nirvana might be achieved on my part.)

Now that would ROCK.

It doesn't actually say he has two hands... it's just kind of implied. It sounds like something Gen would say, though what he and Costis would be doing and how you aim something with a hook...

I think my theory just broke down.

I don't have my books with me. Is the Sacred Way in Attolia, Sounis, or Eddis? (I don't think it's Attolia...I thought it was the road connecting Eddis's palace to the Great Temple, but maybe I'm mistaken.) Someone with access to the books, help?

sounis. Gen describes the road in one of the early chapters of The Thief.

I think.

All it says is:

"We twisted through more narrow streets until we reached Sacred Way , which we followed down to the gate out of the old city." the gate is the lintel one with the lions Megan showed us a photo of sometime ages ago.

"The King's Route was wide and straight, crossing the more circuitous Sacred Way twice again before reaching the docks."

My theory is that the Sacred way goes from the capital of Sounis, through the Pass of Eddis, and to the capital of Attolia. If not, I think it's the general name for a road to a temple. Don't know.

Date: 10/23/09 10:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
Ah, but there is a Sacred Way in Attolia, too. In KofA where Gen goes to the new temple to ask the Oracle a question, it says:

"They left the palace through the gate near the stables and the kennels and proceeded up the Sacred Way on foot."

Date: 10/23/09 10:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rose-amidlilies.livejournal.com
I think that there is a Sacred Way in all three, it's the road that leads to the temples, because there is one metioned in both Sounis and Eddis. It's kinda like every town having a Main Street, all the Ancient Greek cities had one.

Date: 10/23/09 10:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
You're right! In QofA where Gen goes to hide in the temple in Eddis:

"There was a paved path of white stones that led uphill from the gateto intersect the wider pavement of the Sacred Way."

So what point in the book do you guys think this is from? For some reason it strikes me as a dive-in-headfirst opening, but I'm not sure why...

Date: 10/23/09 07:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com
Yeah, the 'younger man' description makes me think that this is from right at the beginning.

It seems that way to me, too. It's very much a diving-in-headfirst, hold-your-breath and don't-breath-till-the-last-page sort of thing.

Thanks for posting this (I was away from my usual internet connection when I first saw this, so I just squealed out loud for a while and didn't have the patience to squeal online at that point. But I definitely squealed a lot)!

As others have said--the book actually exists! And we are going to get to read it!

Eventually...

I think it must be in Attolia, because...

Remember the original "teaser" that came out with the 1st book cover?

Sophos, heir to Sounis, doesn’t look like much of a prince. At least, according to those in power. At least, to those who do not know him or the size of his heart and the depth of his courage, loyalty, and love. But Helen, Queen of Eddis, knows him, and so does Gen, the queen’s Thief, who is now King of Attolia. Gen and the queen believe that Sophos is dead. But they also believe in hope, especially since a body was never found. So when Sophos is discovered in Attolia, climbing a lamppost, peashooter in hand, the obvious question becomes: where has Sophos been all this time?

.....Where, indeed?

And who is that second man, if it isn't the magus? Kamet? Dite the Younger? A complete stranger? Oh, the possibilities!!

Somebody else in the world thinks Kamet might ally with Sophos? Hooray! That's been one of my favorite "what if?"s ever since I became convinced that Sophos was being held by the Medes. Seriously, Kamet needs to get away from his greasy-bearded master...and Sophos is the perfect excuse!

OH, I agree entirely!

I'm not sure where or when we'll actually see Kamet again -- but he did seem too smart, & too interesting not to turn up again somewhere, don't you think?

I'd love it if the other man were Kamet....

what a shame we have to wait so long to find out!
