Sweating Small Stuff
Oct. 26th, 2009 07:40 pmAs often happens while I am engaged in a slog across a seemingly endless valley of responsibilities vaguely related to my education, my mind has recently been wandering back to things that it would really much rather be dealing with. One of these things is (of course) "Conspiracy of Kings", and in this vein, I have a question to put to you all:
What little things are you looking forward to in CoK?
By "little things", I mean components of the books that are not hugely significant or plot-related, but add irreplaceable richness and enjoyment to our beloved series. Details, character quirks, geography, in-jokes, minor characters, watches, fibula pins, a certain monarch's hideous wardrobe... and so on. Tell us what you want to see!

Date: 10/27/09 12:14 am (UTC)More awesome dialogue, of course. It'd be fun if there were more jokes that come back, a la "I can't keep on apologizing..."
I'm excited to see more of the Magus, since he didn't do much in KoA.

these aren't necessarily "little things,

Guess I'm in a romantic mood today. :)
I, too, am looking forward to more Costis, and more Costis and Gen interaction. I frickin LOVE the two of them together! I think they make a great team, so I certainly hope we see more of that.
Also, I hope we get more Helen. I love her, too, and I would love if somehow she featured more prominently in this book, like she did in QoA. I don't know how that would happen, but perhaps with Sophos involved... We'll see. ;)

Date: 10/27/09 05:46 am (UTC)Of course, Attolia/Gen.
Gen becoming king. I have this wonderful picture in my head, unsure how far in the future this would be, of Gen acting the fool to some foreign ambassador - except this time everyone but Gen's victim is in on the 'joke'. That would make me so happy.
Gen's scholarly-ness, especially in conversations with Sophos. They had very little time to talk as Sophos and Eugenides, and I'm looking forward to it.
Oh! and more Relius because I'm in the middle of a fanfic and I having trouble wrapping my mind around all his weird paradoxes.
But in general? I just want this book to come out. Gah. Publishing takes too long.

Date: 10/27/09 06:32 am (UTC)1. Looking forward to more amphoras and ink pots. All the little set dressings that are so perfectly described in the text.
2. Also looking forward to whatever bizarre encounter with the god(s) Gen has next. Always enthralling.
3. And the food. I always want to eat olives when I read QT. Yum.
BTW, I've been rereading KoA today. *sighs* I almost know it by heart and it never gets old. :D

Date: 10/27/09 05:11 pm (UTC)What else...more Irene/Helen conversations, because they are both smart and sharp and terribly protective of Eugenides. Speaking of sharp, needs moar Relius~~~
Will be keeping my eyes peeled for any mention of the gods, Phresine, Teleus, or Eugenides' father (who is played by Sean Connery in my mind, because if Eddis = Scotland, this is only fair).

Date: 10/27/09 09:45 pm (UTC)Also the Magus. More Magus, plz. Where do his loyalties lie these days?
But mostly Sophos. What has he been through and what is he like now? Is he still the kind, trusting soul he was?
And, well, everything.

Date: 10/27/09 10:49 pm (UTC)And DEFINITELY more Costis. And just the interactions between characters.

Date: 10/28/09 02:39 am (UTC)1. Gen angsting/freaking out/losing his temper at various points. (And let's face it, with Nahuserresh running around, it's pretty much a given.)
2. Irene being hilarious. Specifically, Irene being hilarious with Gen, and the Attolian court being weirded out by their creepy, morbid sense of humor. ("Take mine.")
3. Gen pulling whatever Xanatos Gambit he ends up pulling, because that never gets old.
4. The small, quiet moments that punch you in the gut.

Date: 10/28/09 11:47 pm (UTC)PS: EVERYONE, BACK OFF MY MEN! If you don't know by now, Costis, Relius, and the MoW are MINE! Y'all can have the Magus, because I'm generous, and Nahuserfish, because I'm nice. ;-P

Date: 10/31/09 10:37 am (UTC)The food. It always makes me hungry, even the yoghurt with garlic in it, which sounds kinda disgusting. And the watered wine, which always makes me think of Sangria.
The fashion, or lack thereof. Canary-coloured robes, an all-red wardrobe, and orange scarves from Ebla rock the world. I love how many of these little precise details there are.
The bickering over Breakfast. Please let there be more.
How incredibly smart and multi-layered everyone is.
The PEASHOOTER!!! I cannot express how amusing I find the thought of SRS BSNS plotting involving a peashooter. Can't wait to see what MWT does with this.
And I can't wait to actually hold it in my hands and open it for the first time, and see the awesome little curlicues and the nice typefont wrapped around a WHOLE NEW 400 PAGES OF GEN GOODNESS.

Date: 10/31/09 05:27 pm (UTC)I want to see the Magus and Relius have some awesome little bromance-y friendship :)
And of course everything else that everybody has mentioned in this discussion. In fact, there is nothing about this book that I am not excited about.

Date: 11/2/09 08:20 am (UTC)I would like to see some of Eddis again...
I want more spine-tingling moments with the gods. And, a plethora of subtle double-meanings that I can figure out over the next few years... (I managed to say "plethora!". Hah).
