I was wondering: Do we know anything about Attolia's mother? Really, anything you can remember on her parents in general will be appreciated, but I'm curious about her mother in particular.

Thanks.

her mother was the king's second wife, I think, unimportant, her father preferred the concubines. It doesn't say, but I guess her older brother was the son of the king's first wife? And the king was willing to sell his daughter for a peaceful end to his rule, and well, his assassination was apparently unbloody, so.

I'm pretty sure we don't. Her brother died falling off a horse, though. But we are given very little info on Attolia's mom.

On Attolia's childhood Megan once said: Nobody liked her mother. She was ignored by the court until her brother died.

Hmm...just wondering

Does anyone find it odd the of the lack of mother figures in the story?
We don't know much about Attolia's mother, and Gen's mum died when he was really little. Even Hellen's mother is not mentioned (though her brother's and father are)

So is there a lack of mother figures in the story? And does that serve a purpose? If Gen or Irene had a mother would they take the risks they did?

Huh, true. Gen's mother's death certainly made him take steps to be the next Thief, in opposition to his father's wishes. Otherwise, it would have been his mother's role, I suppose.

Gen's mom was a risk-taker too, though. Dancing on the roof and all.

going through teh archieves i noticed a question from QoA

When the MoW strangles Gen is it an 'on the spot' decision or is it preplanned. Did Eugenides ask for death at the hands of his father, or was his father being naturally merciful?

I'm pretty certain it was preplanned, although that is just my interpretation. I think that's what they were saying when Eugenides surrendered to the Mede.

It's so... *sob* dusty in here...

I thought it was preplanned, too, TLE and that's what they talked about. My vote goes to it being the minister of war's idea.

I think it might have been something they were both thinking, but MoW said it.

It's still so dusty...

True...I find it hard to believe Gen would just be like 'kill me' and not worry about making sure the Eddisians made it home safely..i dont know

I think that pretty much all hope was lost by then - they had joined that mission knowing that there was only a very small chance that they'd come back. Eugenides was a special case. Attolia (so they thought) specifically had it in for him, and had threatened to do all sorts of terrible things to him, while the other soldiers would probably just be executed. I guess Gen's decision to die at the hands of his father instead of the Attolians could been seen as selfish, but I disagree. There was very little he could do once his plan had failed.

Whoa. Daughter of the king's second wife? an unimportant heir, to be married off agreeably within a few years? lonely childhood? I think we've found another connection to Elizabeth I, Lady Jane.

We do need to post about all the similarities we've found between them. I'm curious to know how much of that was intentional.

Oh, you should see some of the other parallels we've found! go check on History Haven - the Elizabeth I tag should be loaded with them.
