Excitement and a Few Questions
Dec. 20th, 2009 12:07 amOn account that there is a chance to meet-up with Megan within a five hour drive traversable distance of my hometown I began my perilous quest to convince my mother it is worth driving to. Upon the successful completion of my venture, #5 (my ten-year old brother), asked if he could go too. My mother responded that he could, only if he read the books before the scheduled day, no doubt assuming that he wouldn't even if he could. I, who had been looking for an excuse to read the books aloud and perfect my voices for each character, volunteered to read them to him. We started TT yesterday and are now on chapter nine of QoA, half of which has been read aloud and the other half he read without me because he got tired of waiting. =)
Anyway, the point is I now have another family-member who has read the books and (finally) someone who I think loves them as much as I do. When we reached the end of TT, the part where Gen talks about Archimedes, he randomly burst into uncontrollable laughter. Apparently he has just finished studying Archimedes in school. He hasn't shut up about the books since we started them and has brought up some interesting questions. The one that has stumped me though is: "Is Gen in any way descended from Eugenides the god?" Also, one that I've come across as an actor reading the books aloud for the first time, what does the Eddisian accent sound like? The accent is mentioned in KoA but I haven't yet found one that I like, any opinions? Is it strange that I mentally squee every time I think about CoK coming soon?

Date: 12/20/09 05:43 pm (UTC)As for the accent - nice to hear there are more actors here! I'm an aspiring one, at least. I've spent some time thinking about the eddisian accent, but I'm still not sure about it. The only thing we know for sure is that it's a little similar to scottish, and the thing about adding a syllable to every word. I chose to interpret that as heavy on the consonants, but nothing like the clicking in the audiobook. That was painful. Tell us if you come up with an idea for that!

Date: 12/20/09 10:36 pm (UTC)But I don't know if Gen's that gifted. Physically he's amazing, although a lot of that is hard work, patience, and concentration. Mentally, he's astounding, but he isn't without flaw. His ideas go more or less according to plan, but there are always surprises, glitches, downright disasters, and intervention from the gods. So I'd say no on his being a demi-god.
Unless you count his ability to inspire complete and utter devotion from his fans (fictional and nonfictional alike) despite being a brat. That is definitely super human. :D

I am so impressed that you consider accents when you read aloud!
Congrats on (finally) converting your brother and you have an amazing mother!
