On account that there is a chance to meet-up with Megan within a five hour drive traversable distance of my hometown I began my perilous quest to convince my mother it is worth driving to. Upon the successful completion of my venture, #5 (my ten-year old brother), asked if he could go too. My mother responded that he could, only if he read the books before the scheduled day, no doubt assuming that he wouldn't even if he could. I, who had been looking for an excuse to read the books aloud and perfect my voices for each character, volunteered to read them to him. We started TT yesterday and are now on chapter nine of QoA, half of which has been read aloud and the other half he read without me because he got tired of waiting. =)

Anyway, the point is I now have another family-member who has read the books and (finally) someone who I think loves them as much as I do. When we reached the end of TT, the part where Gen talks about Archimedes, he randomly burst into uncontrollable laughter. Apparently he has just finished studying Archimedes in school. He hasn't shut up about the books since we started them and has brought up some interesting questions. The one that has stumped me though is: "Is Gen in any way descended from Eugenides the god?" Also, one that I've come across as an actor reading the books aloud for the first time, what does the Eddisian accent sound like? The accent is mentioned in KoA but I haven't yet found one that I like, any opinions? Is it strange that I mentally squee every time I think about CoK coming soon?

You aren't actually driving five hours to meet me, are you? Good Heavens.

Yeah, five hours is nothin'. If we're ever within five or so hours, Rosie, I will totally drive us, okay?

I'm of the opinion that Eugenides isn't a demigod, even a little bit of one. But that's just my opinion, based entirely on my impressions of the characters. Love to see what others think about this one!

As for the accent - nice to hear there are more actors here! I'm an aspiring one, at least. I've spent some time thinking about the eddisian accent, but I'm still not sure about it. The only thing we know for sure is that it's a little similar to scottish, and the thing about adding a syllable to every word. I chose to interpret that as heavy on the consonants, but nothing like the clicking in the audiobook. That was painful. Tell us if you come up with an idea for that!

The accent bit is a really good point. I have the KoA audiobook; I wonder if the narrator takes the accents into account.

It's not at all strange to mentally squee when ever you think about COK. At least. I don't think it is. :)

I sympathize completely with the convincing-parents-it's-worth-the-drive part. I'm only about a 3 hour drive away, and my mom is willing to come with me, but she's never read the books and I'm not sure what she'll do while I'm fangirling in Mysterious Galaxies.

Squeeing for that reason is not strange at all. It would be strange if you *didn't*.

If your bro has studied Greek mythology, he's aware of how many humans are in some way descended from the gods, especially ones with superhuman gifts. Since Gen is obviously very gifted, your brother's question is a really good one.

But I don't know if Gen's that gifted. Physically he's amazing, although a lot of that is hard work, patience, and concentration. Mentally, he's astounding, but he isn't without flaw. His ideas go more or less according to plan, but there are always surprises, glitches, downright disasters, and intervention from the gods. So I'd say no on his being a demi-god.

Unless you count his ability to inspire complete and utter devotion from his fans (fictional and nonfictional alike) despite being a brat. That is definitely super human. :D

I have to admit, I've never considered that maybe the reason Gen has caught the attention of the gods is because his family is descended from them, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes to me.

Yeah, I think Megan said once that the Eddisians sound sort of like Scots. *imagines Sean Connery playing the Minister of War*

I share your joy completely. My sister is the only one in my family who shares my love and it was bliss to convert her over. In fact we are reading QoA aloud together (again). It has become a sort of tradition to read the books together when I come over once a year.
Did Eugenides (the God, that is) have children? I guess only MWT knows that, but it is a family name so...
I am so impressed that you consider accents when you read aloud!
Congrats on (finally) converting your brother and you have an amazing mother!

I think it's really sweet that you've read that much out loud to your little brother. I like to read stories aloud, but I definitely get tired after about a chapter. I'm so impressed! And I'm very happy to see you could bond with family over a good book. It's so fun to be able to talk about characters and their motivations with friends and family. :)
