We sent these questions to mwt and got back the infamous "Not Telling" response. So what do YOU think? :).

Don't worry about the numbers they don't correspond because I took some questions out. If it really bothers you, however, just let me know!

1. (real question) Do they celebrate birthdays in Eddis?

3. In KoA, Gen stays up with Relius during the "dog watch of the night" we assume he knows this is the worst hour because he's been through it, we're wondering who stayed up with Gen during that time?

5. What was Attolia's mother like?

6. How come we don't see any of Gen's numerous brothers and sisters visit him after he comes back from Attolia? Particularly Stenides. (From the book we know that he doesn't have any other visitors besides his father and Eddis)

7. Does Stenides still live in Eddis's palace? Is he married?

8. In The Theif Gen mentions all his siblings have the same father. There is some speculation about if they have the same mother? (Can you confirm/deny?)

9. What was Attolia's childhood like? Did she ever have any friends?

10. Was there a possible romance between Attolia and Relius (that Attolia was not aware of)?

12. Gen's father, MoW was known to be strict, can we say the same for his Grandfather?

13. Who are Eugenides's true friends? Do you believe a monarchs/sovereign leaders can have true friends?

14. A lot of people ship Eddis and Magus, was there a possible intention behind this? Are the Magus and Eddis just friends?

15. How do you come up with the plot lines? Do you have the whole thing planned out?

16. The book deals with love marriages, and marriage for political reasons. What do you believe about love? Do you think people should marry for love?

17. How was the marriage between Gen's mother and father?

18. Did Gen see his mother fall?

Have at it!!! Also, you ARC-ers, try to keep everything spoiler free, but I think it's okay if you say 'oh some of these questions will get answered in the mere future'

I think a lot of these questions don't have definitive answers, but at least one of them is a major bone of contention (and two or three others of some lesser degree of importance) in, er, upcoming events.

I think the first chunk of questions makes something quite clear: Megan Whalen Turner needs to make a family tree.

I bet she thinks we don't really need to know.

My brain is filled with things I dont need to know!

And then perhaps an encyclopedia? =D

I can't help wanting to know useless information that's not important to the story...I want to know EVERYTHING. Even things like Gen's great-great-great-great grandparent's middle names...

I like the birthdays question. I've never thought about that!

For #3, I'm pretty sure the answer is, no one. I think that's why he liked being in such a remote part of the palace - no one felt like they had to check on him. Early on, of course, it was Galen or one of his assistants.

I'll come back and write more later, gotta do homework.

Homework...who needs it? And I agree with your answer.

About the dog-watch...
I never really thought about it, but I'm assuming that he (Gen) is thinking back on when he was ... recovering from his ... injury, and how he would have nightmares galore and wake up in the middle of the night. I agree that he was probably alone. He's a very internal-type person, and he tries to hide his pain. Of course, he had Eddis and Galen, and sometimes the Magus, but I don't think any of them would have been there at night. And now he's giving Relius the support that he knows he (R) needs.
Agh.

I understand people wanting to know the answers to these questions, but IMO they're not important to the stories or MWT would have put that info into the books. So I suggest the questioners create their own answers in a way that pleases them most :-).

She's brainwashed you, hasn't she?

Yes, you could say they're silly, unimportant questions and we came up with much more in dept questions later but they're still fun, and yeah, we all come up with answers that we like best but half the fun is to see what others come up with too.

I mean if we never did that, then there would be no underwear conspiracy, or sparkly vampires, or crazy dress parties...and what's Sounis without that?

Actually, I want to apologize. I was reading much too quickly (skimming, actually). I got the impression y'all were complaining that MWT wasn't answering your questions and didn't catch the "what do you think" part.

"Yes, you could say they're silly, unimportant questions"

Whoa. I didn't say that. I said they're not important "TO THE STORIES", i.e. the plot, the characterization, which is why I suspect she said "not telling". To me, the fun part of reading is filling in blanks, using my imagination. One of the reasons I really hate movies based on books is because no actor looks like the character I have in my head and nothing looks the way I imagine it. But YMMV, which is fine.

As for all the other Sounis stuff, that's what y'all are doing: filling in the gaps in a fun way. I'm not criticizing.

Smiley smiley, everyone, smiley smiley. :) :) :)
Don't start throwing any inkpots, now.
(Kidding! I know it's not a big deal; I just needed an excuse to say that. Inkpots are very cool, and an excellent way of expressing one's feelings.)

Ha! Shows how much you know. She's doing it totally to torture you. She's mean.

I met her Tuesday. Ten of us spent 4.5 hours!! with her and it *was* torture. I kept wanting to leave, but I'd carpooled with two people and they didn't see through her. They just kept hanging on her every word.

She's an ogre. She wouldn't say a *word* about the next book. Just kept smiling her Eeeevilllll smile.

You know, she said she was planning to stop various places to do booksignings and meetups after ACoK comes out. You could get lucky...

I'd be happy to get some books signed for you and velvetrose (and any other sounisian) in April if she doesn't mosey in your direction. (If she actually does booksignings here as she said she would.) I could order a whole bunch of copies of ACoK through Amazon and send to any of you for $14.23 ($11.46 + $2.73 media mail postage). Which is still cheaper than $17 cover price.

The meetup was great because there were 10 of us so *my* stupid questions were cleverly hidden by the other people's brilliant questions.

Good questions, you guys. I am going to think about a few...
12. Gen's father, MoW was known to be strict, can we say the same for his Grandfather?
We DO know that The Granfather had beliefs, or strong ingredients for life (be able to use both hands, go and find things out for yourself, leave an offering every month on the altar, etc) that he passed on to Gen. I'm guessing he was strict, but not in a mean way at all. MoW isn't strict in a mean way either, but I see The Grandfather as being really different from him.

13. Who are Eugenides's true friends? Do you believe a monarchs/sovereign leaders can have true friends?
Hah! I was thinking about this a few weeks ago! Who does he TRUST?? Well, Eddis is definitely a true, trusted friend. And the Magus, even though Gen has double crossed him a few times, would be added to my list. Attolia? I think the two of them UNDERSTAND each other really well (and love each other too, of course), but there's still a part of him that's afraid of her. Even in KoA (Say you won't poke out my eyes, cleave my lying tongue, etc). And she knows that there's no stopping him from doing things that are against her and her authority (The whole Teleus Oxe Harbrea thing) even if it's for her own good.
Hmm, that's not many people. Other possible friends: Sophos, dad, Heiro, Ornon (?) Ok, maybe not.

14. A lot of people ship Eddis and Magus, was there a possible intention behind this? Are the Magus and Eddis just friends?
Gah! Yes! I for one believe they are just friends! It's just that she seems to be the only friend the Magus is around (Sophos being missing, Gen being in Attolia, Pol being dead, and the Magus himself being "a prisoner in Eddis.") AND, if anything, he probably thinks of her more as a daughter or sister or other family member, because he has no family anymore. Besides, they're both awesome and amazing. Who wouldn't be friends with them?

I went to the meet-up on Tuesday too and I think I may have something of an answer to #15. She mentioned that she had just finished plotting out something of a story arc for the next two books, after CofK but still needed to go through and actually write it.

As for the others, I'll give my opinion/90-page thesis eventually but I'm stealing time from other "more important" stuff as it is. =P

P.S. Someone should really do a post on the SoCal meet-up.

The main reason we get so many "not tellings" is explained in this fabulous article by Kristin Cashore (http://www.hbook.com/magazine/articles/2010/jan10_cashore.asp) from The Horn Book Magazine.

I think Megan said once that she doesn't make up all those little details until she needs them, and once she states them she's stuck with them. I think she used an example with one of the islands. If she says it's in such-and-such a place, without a good reason for saying it, but then in the next book finds it works better with the story if it's 500 miles closer to the capital, it's too late. It's already canon and the story is going to have to happen a little differently.

Or it could be, as others have said, that she's a mean ogre with an evil smile who likes torturing people.

I've been thinking about the birthday thing, and I'm sure that they're observed -- after all, the cultures closest to what we see in the books (Classical Greece and Renaissance Europe) certainly celebrated birthdays.

Of course, the reason they did was because they were absolutely OBSESSED with astrology -- and it suddenly struck me as very odd that we see no hint of that in the QT series. Eddis associates the gods with natural features (springs, mountains, etc.), but there is no hint that anyone associates them with astronomical objects. Or days of the week.

Hmmm. I wonder if that's significant, or just something that's Not Important To The Story?

Question 6

Date: 1/9/10 11:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nananoni.livejournal.com
Actually.. The question that really bothered was Q6.. Even in KoA he mentions that no one would dance with him/being lonely and stuff.. I mean doesn't he have any close ties with any of his siblings??=( (Don't worry Gen I'm there for you.. I don't mind being your siter =P )

Anyways.. Thanks for the great post guys!! =)

For some reason I can see Gen's sisters seeing him as a little pest. The antics of little boys can be really annoying when you are too young to see it as cute (trust me I have seven brothers...yes I said seven). Then, when they are older they might very well have been married and not living in the palace. Another theory is since Gen is such a natural loner he probably never expressed an interest in dancing with the court, so none of his sisters even thought about it.

Ha! I just had this funny picture in my head of Gen sitting in rafters or something high above a crowd of dancers, throwing grapes at them and enjoying their bewildered expressions.

lol I used to do that!

The throwing grapes thing LOL..actually they were peanuts..it's very entertaining, especially when you're seven.
