Greetings, reprobates! And welcome to What's This Line From!

mortalasabee  had an excellent idea to play a wonderful little Queen's Thief game.

Here's how it works...

Quote a line from the series. It can be any line from any of the four books, dialog or narration. The Sounisian who guesses correctly will be awarded invisible streamers, expresso, and a free puppy. If you don't have a puppy, give the winner cookies as consolation.

Rules

Here's what to write...

-Which book the quote is from.

-What the next line is, or a generally summary of what happens next for those of you who don't have your copies with you.

(Since we all have different editions, I've decided to exclude page numbers, but you can put them in if you want to. Just remember to write which edition the number is from.)

Using the word search feature on Kindle or an any other digital version of the books is NOT ALLOWED!

If you have your copies with you, please post a new quote when you guess. That way the ball keeps on rolling.

The Thief! When he's taunting magus about not bringing a cart along with them!

The first one is from KoA when Attolia is remembering when she met Relius and he began in her service, and warned her to trust nobody. "Not even you?" she had laughed, back when she still laughed sometimes (or words to that effect).

And I so hope that, if only in private with Gen, Attolia sometimes just laughs and giggles and chortles happily.

The second one is also KoA; Costis is asleep on the bench in the guard room and Gen's screams inside his locked bedroom awaken Costis.

The Thief - chapter 2, when the guards are walking him down the hall to the courtyard. I think the beginning of the sentence is something about the only sound being the tramp of boots...

I love that he always needs to point out how quiet and/or graceful he is. haha.

KoA, after Costis shoots the doorknob to pieces. He's standing outside guarding the royals so they can have some snuggle time.

(1) The Thief, when they're arguing about which trail to take. The next line is something like "A successful thief? How would you know?"

(2) Also TT. They're at the temple in the dystopia and when the magus asks him what he wants for lunch, Gen's reply is, "Oh, I'll have some [insert fancy food names here], thank you." (Okay, I gave in and looked it up. p. 142 in the 1998 paperback, and it's "stuffed pigeons in sauce, thank you, and some decent wine to drink. None of that cheap stuff, please.")

1 - Heh, heh, in Q of A, Gen to the Magus, explaining why blowing up Sounis's navy was inspired by the Magus's "advice"

2 - C of K, Sophos to Ion, advising Ion to confess his lapse to the king (accidentally allowing the Mede to get near Sophos because Ion was meeting with a girl) and assuring Ion that his continued employment as an attendant might still be possible

3 - Thief, as Gen is descending the stairs into Eddis's throne room, and all the onlookers/servants/courtiers who were woken up are also trailing in to see the show

1. Dite is being exiled, and is taking a lot of stuff with him in QoA.

2. Describing the "statue" of Hephestia in the underwater temple where Hamiathes' Gift is in The Thief.

3. The MoW in QoA (alphabet soup, anyone?) after Gen has kidnapped Attolia and brought her to the Eddisians' camp; he's merely a plain ol' soldier but being near a queen doesn't seem to daunt him.

#2 When Eddis talks to Sophos the first time in CoK and he says he's less than a prince.

#3 Eddis asking Attolia about Nahuseresh after they've united to fend off his army. The next line is, "So did he."

1. After the Magus beats Gen in The Thief, I think after Sophos offers him a leg up onto his horse and he refuses.

2. Ooooooo... I am failing again. It's either after the chop scene, in the dungeons; or after the bad dream in KoA when Costis hasn't realized he isn't faking an Attolian accent. Aw, someone else take it from here! :S

Finally emerging from the depths of paper-writing to have a crack at these...

Unfortunately, I'm drawing a blank at #1.

However:

2) Attolia to Costis, in KoA, when he's offered to prove that he was acting alone rather than as part of a conspiracy. (I think he then says, "No, Your Majesty.")

3) Also from KoA, when the musicians start playing that provoking Eddisian dance. Attolia is the speaker, and her comment diffuses Gen's anger. Again.
