Now, I hope I'm not jinxing us all here, but... What would you do if Eugenides, or any other character you love, for that matter, died? We know that Megan doesn't hesitate when it comes to her characters and bad situations, but really, have any of you considered this? I have no idea what I would do. Her books have been a big part of my life, and I just feel so attached to them, especially Gen. Even though it's fiction, my feelings aren't, and I could see myself in mourning, definitely. I could cry just thinking about it.

Sorry if you guys are annoyed with the frequent posting, I'm just.. blah I dunno. Graduating is seeming sort of scary to me at this point, and it seems like it's raveled up in these stories, since they've been with me so long. Also, the thought of a six year wait for another book is also sadd. I'd be twenty fourr. :/

Hyperventilate, call Quark and freak out at her, then get over it. They're just books, after all, and I have about a zillion other fandoms.

I always cry when characters die. Always. Matthew in Anne of Green Gables, Sirius in Harry Potter, Bevis in Knight's Fee, everything. I'm often more sad for the people they leave behind in the story than I am for losing the characters themselves, though like you said I am very attached to all the QT characters.

I would probably be really sad, then really mad at Megan, then I would eventually come to accept it, because I know she wouldn't do it without a good reason. I like what you said, that's it's fiction but your feelings aren't. I agree completely, and feel the same way.

You know, I've gone through this exact thing with another fandom. I dealt with it by writing canon-denial fanfic to save the character. ;) Sensible and mature? No way. But it made me feel a lot better.

If it were Gen or Irene (for Gen's sake) I would ball, and when I was done, I would probably think about it every day and cringe and sniffle. I would never get over it.

If it were any other character from the books, I'd prolly just cringe and object, then get over it and move on.

BUT NOT IF IT WAS GEN. He's too awesomecleversweetnoble-... Epic.

I'd mourn. And wear black. And not talk to any one. And then I'd try and figure out exactly why MWT killed him/her off.

yeah... this is especially a concern for me because as much as I absolutely adore Gen, I have a dangerous habit of falling for the awesome secondary characters (i.e, Teleus/Relius/MoW/pretty much everyone else)... in other words, the characters who are most likely to die. :(

Gen will fake his death so he can whisk Irene away to a normal life and leave the ruling to Sophos and Helen.

(I heard someone say they thought Gen was maneuvering to leave the ruling to them. It just occurred to me that faking his death would be a good way to do that. The sneaky little snot.)

I would be devastated, but knowing Megan, it would be for a really good reason and I'd see the logic even if it made me sad.

And as attached as I am to these books---they're my favorites, ever---I would get over it probably in a couple months or less. Then I'd probably reread the whole series once to get the full, awesome effect of it, and put the books in boxes and never return. Whereas if he lives, I will never, ever stop rereading. Ever. They're just too good.

Date: 5/13/10 02:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tiegirl.livejournal.com
Yes, this is my fear. If she kills him I will no longer reread them. And I really want to keep rereading them. Forever. And ever.

If it was one of major characters, specifically Gen: I think I would feel horribly sad, and worried, possibly howl at the sky, and almost definitely cry and sob to whoever was nearest me. It would be a horrific experience.

But, like some of yous are saying, I completely trust mwt (especially after meeting her) to have extremely valid, well thought out reasons for killing someone. So I'd accept it. But what would HAPPEN if Gen died? My theory right now is that he's too important to die. And that (maybe) Eugenides-god would intervene if he almost does.

From: [identity profile] amolegere.livejournal.com
Well, that's what I thought about Dumbledore... "He's too important, you can't kill him, he'll come back in the next book, psh, he can't REALLY be dead... right?" But I think you're right, his god will not let him fall.

It depends on how he died, I think. If he died young and violently, I'd definitely bawl my eyes out. However, if he lived till 72, had 8 grandchildren and hailed in all the land as "the greatest king ever, then I'll probably get a bit teary smiling, then go back to re-read rightaway!

I think a part of me will also die, like you know that you've read a good book if you close the last page and feel like you've lost someone. If this ever really does happen, I will seriously enter the stages of death, starting with a long period of denial and ending in acceptance.
