Anatolia

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, and I can't remember what MWT said on this subject in her introductions.  With that disclaimer made, I was wondering if anyone has any speculations about geographically where Sounis, Eddis and Attolia would be.  I've always assumed they were in the vicinity of Greece, but I found out that the general region around Turkey is also known as Anatolia.  The Mediterranean region even has a mountain range, the Taurus mountains.  I realize Turkey was pretty solidly Byzantine, but assuming there's some serious alternate history, it's approximately between the Romans and the Persians.

Any thoughts?

I've pondered the possible (inspirational) connection between real Anatolia and fictional Attolia before.

Other than that... I came across "Edessa" and thought, Hey! That sounds like Eddis! =) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edessa

I always put them on a little Greek-like bump with lots of mountains and islands and things. It's the islands that really make me feel like it's Greece. But she has said in her author's notes that she hopes the setting, with its technology and science and whatnot, comes across more Byzantine than Archaic. So coastal Turkey is a perfect guess given the time period.

I mostly fail at history. Tell me if I'm remembering correctly: Wasn't Byzantium the eastern half of the Roman Empire that lasted until maybe the 1400s when the Ottomans took them over, and spoke Greek as its language of learning rather than Latin, and sort of skipped the Dark Ages that happened elsewhere in Europe, and was later on responsible for sparking the western Renaissance because all the scholars left and went west during the plague...? If you can get through that sentence, congratulations.

Went west after the Crusaders sacked the place because they figured they'd get more money that way than crusading, and then the Ottomans conquered what was left. The plague had more to do with the west being in a favorable state for humanist teachings as it helped break down the feudal hierarchy.

:) Well, it was before I wrote the sentence, when all I thought I could remember was it was the east half of the Roman Empire. But then the sentence got longer as my high school history classes trickled back through my head... That's absolutely all I know about it, though.

Yes.

Well, it's a peninsula, with a very distict culture (different than "the continent" and, of course, the Medes). And around the "Middle sea." So I've just pictured it as auxillary peninsula beside the Mediterranean in mwt's wonderful world. I also (and other people too, methinks) identify Ferria with Italy...
