Apparently, this will be a weekly series.

There're lots of pictures and description. Folks hereabouts might find it of interest.

Did you know that the map from the book was created by Maxime Plasse? I didn't! Until I found her deviantart account when I searched Google images for a copy of the map.

Check this out. She posted the map on her deviantart (a very high-res version!) but she also had some very interesting comments about the commission:

"A map commissionned by Harper Collins Publishers for Megan Whalen successfull serie "Queens Thief". The map is supposed to be a subjective vision of some people of the world (mainly from the regions of Attolia, Sounis and Eddis) hence it is heavily and artificially distorded to focus on those regions and also on the Mede territory, an ancestral ennemy if I understood good. The world depicted in Queen's thief is loosely based on a antique mediteranean culture.
Harper Collins also asked me to leave the title/text box empty so they'd deal with it on their own."

Subjective version! Heavily and artificially distorted! I think we had some fans speculating that that was the case, but did we know for sure before now?

I love that even the publishers are all in on the unreliable narration of this world.

I just finished my first re-read of TaT. As ever, the Queen's Thief books hold up better and better the more you read them. I became pretty fascinated with geography on this read-through (I mean, come on, MAPS!) and I also really wanted to know certain things, such as...

So....this is too good not to share, but don't ask how I got it.

I have been told that this link will not last forever, and it may go down sometime next week. I will try to remember to remove the post when that happens.

MWT spoke at the School Library Journal Day of Dialog and I just so happen to have the link and password to her presentation. It is all about the maps in the new book! Her speech lasts for about 30 min at the beginning of the Livestream. Enjoy!

Today, MWT posted on her tumblr feed: "The Thief was published twenty years, four months, and 23 days ago. Twenty years, four month and *21* days ago, people started asking me for a map. The wait is almost over. My editor says she is sending it to me tomorrow and I will post it here."

Later in the day, she posted the image below. Is this the map we've been waiting for (It is not completely clear to me)? It looks AH-MAYZ-ING.

Artist: Maxime Plasse

So, the inscription on the side says (to the best of my understanding), "This map of Eddis, Attolia, and Sounis was prepared for Her Highness Gitta Kingsdaughter by her tutor, Tykus Namikus for her reference while reading the books of the Queen's Thief."

So....if this IS the official map...who is Gitta? Royalty, obviously, but from which family/country? DISCUSS.

We speculate about Kamet.

We pass around some British scones with jam.

We discuss the geography of a fictional universe for some reason.

A PSA for all reprobates: as we discussed during the chat, reprobate wranglers the mods, [livejournal.com profile] checkers65477 and I, are now on Tumblr. We will be crossposting things from Sounis to help the community and Megan promote the new book

Hello, Sounis!

I've been a lurker for a while now, even before KoA was published. I've been captivated with the Queen's Thief series since I had to read The Thief for Battle of the Books in middle school. That was 8 years ago, and I'm just as interested as ever in Megan Whalen Turner and posts on Sounis, especially fanfiction. However, I wanted to introduce myself because I have some interesting photos to share (and because checkers encouraged introductions).

Last summer, I traveled extensively in Greece while studying archaeology. I found myself constantly looking at the landscape for Gen's sea of olives. I finally found the perfect example at Delphi, where olive trees are so dense they look like a river. The sanctuary ruins at Delphi also look like what I imagine Eddis to be like in the mountains.

So, some of you may have seen [livejournal.com profile] tearoha's uber cool map (and her map post, and some of you may have seen my 12-year-old attempt (there was a better quality scan of that but I couldn't find it, so I took a photo with my laptop ^_^) Since CoK came out I've been trying to do a proper comprehensive map with as much information as possible, and I have come to the conclusion that...

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, and I can't remember what MWT said on this subject in her introductions.  With that disclaimer made, I was wondering if anyone has any speculations about geographically where Sounis, Eddis and Attolia would be.  I've always assumed they were in the vicinity of Greece, but I found out that the general region around Turkey is also known as Anatolia.  The Mediterranean region even has a mountain range, the Taurus mountains.  I realize Turkey was pretty solidly Byzantine, but assuming there's some serious alternate history, it's approximately between the Romans and the Persians.

Any thoughts?

The perks of study abroad include being able to visit really cool museums that don't exist in your itty bitty home town. Even better perks include finding little bits of Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis as I travel (especially since I've always associated the three more with Spain than anywhere else). This week I went to the Museo Naval (Navy Museum) in Madrid. It mostly had models of famous Spanish ships, but one really cool section included old weapons. Including these really cool muskets from 1600, 1525, and 1630 (top to bottom). They made me really excited since I can defintely see this being the type of gun issued to Attolia's guard. They're functional but ornate at the same time.

Pictures below cut. I have more if anyone's as interested in 17th century Spanish weaponry as I am.

Okay, I added a powder horn from the same time period as the muskets, the stock of the 1600 musket, a pair of firing mechanisms shaped like snakes/dragons, and Sounis' fleet right before Eugenides' plan gets to it.

I am not one of those blessed with the ability to see book geography--or any geography--in my head. I have trouble navigating my way out of a paper bag. As such I don't really have a mental image of geographic details of Eddis, and I don't have time to comb through the books working it all out. So I thought I would come to my dear friends here and ask.

I am working on a project which involves the geography of Eddis. I don't need to know details of where they are, like a map, but I just need reminders of what all is in Eddis. I know there are mountains, especially the sacred mountains, the Irkes forest, and the Aracthus river. Anything else important?

I will post photos of this project once it is done, but right now I can't give any details.

Thanks for any help!

I was watching a documentary on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. Very sad story but fascinating (in a morbid kind of way). Sorta like an ancient world epic tragedy. You can watch it if want to. This link is for part 1:

Anyway it reminded me of the vision Eugenides saw in QoA and I wonder if the idea was inspired by Vesuvius. Thoughts?

My eighth grader are reading The Thief. Last week, we were reading aloud and found that in the book it said North, but on my kindle, it said "South" I do not remember which page it was, and I thought it was just my Kindle, BUT, today it happened again. On page 44 of one of the books it said "west to the foothills and east to the main road" Publish date 1998. The other one,(page 57) which is newer and my Kindle are opposite. Could this be why our interpretation for the maps are different? Have I stumbled upon a conspiracy?
