You've always wanted to buy Megan Whalen Turner an omelet, haven't you?  Now's your chance.

Remember this post about the colloquium at Simmons College in Boston, where MWT will be appearing on Oct. 2?  Megan wants to know about a possible Boston Meetup:

I'll be in Boston on Sunday, October 3 and I don't think I have anything I am supposed to be doing before I leave.  Can you ask Sounis if anyone would like to meet for coffee?  Or possibly brunch?  Or if they can't, can they recommend a good place in the Simmons, Harvard, MIT area to get a donut and a latte or something like that?

So, who's up for it?

Gosh, I'm hungry now.

OH GOD I WANT TO DO THIS SO MUCH! But I don't know if I can justify an all-day excursion all the way to Boston in the middle of the semester. It may depend on how much work I have at the point.

Grr lucky Boston people! My sister's going to Bostun U this year. I would use it as an excuse to visit her (conveniently on the weekend of Sunday the 3rd) but, uh, finances do not in fact permit. So have fun everyone who goes!

I'm so sad that she never seems to have a reason to come to the southeast. We're cool down here (well, actually, we're really hot, but I digress). We're polite. We say y'all. :D

But I hope this comes together for all the rest of you lucky folks.

I'll be in Orlando in November! Not particularly far east of my current position, but way south!

I suppose you couldn't get much farther east unless you wanted to hang out in the ocean itself. Orlando works. XD

Okay, here is a preliminary report. Unfortunately Boston is really not a breakfast town, unlike my beloved Santa Fe, where I could steer you to some fabulous places. But there are some things.

Hi-Rise Bakery, Brattle Street, Cambridge. Pluses: BEST COFFEE. Really yummy baked goods and oatmeal. Outdoor tables if the weather's nice. Minuses: Indoor tables if the weather's bad, and they're pretty funky, wobbly tables. It can also get loud inside. Opens 10:00 Sundays. There's another location with more food options, but the tables are even worse.

Of course you know where Peet's is. Baked goods are so-so.

S&S, Inman Square, Cambridge. Pluses: serious breakfast food. About a 15 minute walk from Harvard or Central, or it's on a bus line. Minuses: often crowded on weekends, could be a line if the timing's off. Opens 8 a.m. Sundays.

Trident Booksellers and Cafe, Newbury Street, Boston. Pluses: It's a bookstore with breakfast. Minuses: I've never been there, I cannot vouch for it. Opens at 8 a.m.

Cambridge Common, between Harvard and Porter, Cambridge. Has brunch. Opens at 10:30. Never been here either. Their website has me skeptical.

There are a couple of places out my way, which makes them easily accessible by bus but not directly on the subway line, so maybe not worth it, but: Deluxe Town Diner, Watertown. GOOD breakfast, opens 7 a.m. If you're serious about doughnuts, there's Linda's Donuts, Belmont, opens at 6 a.m., great doughnuts plus breakfast, but I doubt you're going to find a latte here.

My inclination is to go with the Hi-Rise or try out the Trident bookstore place. If other Boston people know of other options, please chime in!

Another place a little out of town but accessible: Pie Bakery in Newton, opens at 8. Never been here, either, but PIE!

I'll be there! And so will Mary and Maria! (Even if we have to sleep on the street....arghhhh! We've got a room for Friday night, but not for Saturday).

The student dining hall at Simmons had awesome waffles on Sunday mornings back in my day -- but that was 12 years ago, so who knows? Maybe they still do? There's also a Hojos not too far away (where they have no rooms....). It's right near Fenway park. Or we could go to the MFA, for something quieter. And the Gardner is AWESOME for brunch, and right down the street! Or, we could go downtown and find something on the water, and maybe tour the U.S.S. Constitution at the same time (or go to the Aquarium and see the adorable rock hopper penguins!) And there's tons of stuff in Quincy Market.

There's no lack of places to eat in Boston! (....places to sleep? That's another story! Maybe because Megan is so awesome! And the Red Sox are playing the Yankees that weekend. AT FENWAY....oh, well....)

There's also The Friendly Toast, it's in Technology Square right off the Kendall stop (red line). I don't know if they take reservations, but I would love to meet Megan anywhere!!!

Neither have I -- but I don't really know Cambridge. I tended to lurk right around Simmons, with excursions into Boston itself....

But hey, "best breakfast in America?" Sounds like it would be worth a visit. I like the edible nasturtiums, too, but maybe not for breakfast....

;-D

(BTW I was looking for a Greek diner -- those Greeks make the most awesome French Toast! -- and there are 1 or 2 in Boston)

So...who gets to decide where we're going? Megan, I would think?

There's a place called Steve's on Newbury Street that fits as a Greek diner:

OK, Bostonian Sounisians!

Here's the URL for the Gardner cafe. Which would be a tad pricey, but beautiful. And I mean absolutely unique! The Gardner is really worth seeing, if you haven't been there.

BTW, anybody named Isabella gets free admission for life. (Any takers?)

And there is, of course, a Starbucks very near Simmons, for those who like predictably strong coffee.....

I think I am leaning toward the Trident Bookshop, even though it is small, because it is close. Any comments? If it is impossible to get a table, maybe we could all walk to the nearest Starbucks as a back-up plan.

Sounds good to me too--yay bookstores!

Is there anyone who would be interested in car-pooling from Rhode Island?

Oooh! The Trident Bookshop sounds great! I checked their menu -- lots of yummy things for not too much money. Sounds awesome to me! Plus, they are an independent bookshop. I would definitely be up for it.

So, how many of us will there actually be?

(I really love the Gardner -- I could see Irene eating there -- but it would be more expensive. And their book selection is limited. Although they do have a pretty awesome stone lion a la gates of Sounis)

So why don't we set the time to work best for the most burdened party? Who is going to have the hardest time getting there and what time works best for you?

I'll have about an hour's drive, so I might be the farthest; 7:30 is about the ealiest I'd like to be there, although I could do earlier...

Bother, that was me, Charlotte. And I see, looking back over earlier messages, that the Trident doesn't open till 8 anyway...So any time 8 or after is fine with me!

Charlotte, it would take more than coffee to lure me there before 8:00 anyway. Can we pick a nice civilized hour like ten, or would that interfere with people's plans for the rest of the day?

who remembered to sign this time

It will probably be more crowded at 10 than earlier, but otherwise it's fine with me.
