Hello, I've been lurking for a while now and have finally decided to introduce myself.  :]

I first discovered The Queen of Attolia in 7th grade for a book report. I read it, didn't get it, so I switched to another book. I was an idiot.
Moving on the 10th grade, high school library, fiction section. I spy a very new looking, hardcover book titled The King of Attolia. .....That sounds awfully familiar. So I checked out the book, made the connection between the two books, and proceeded to fall in love with the series. Naturally, I had to go track down a copy of The Thief, and anytime I go re-read any of the books, I stand in awe of Ms. Turner's writing.

I'm wondering if anyone has read M.K. Hobson's The Native Star? It's a really good book, and the title for the head of the Mirabilis Institute is called Sophos! Sophos! HA!  (unfortunately, the guy who was Sophos during the story isn't as cool as the Queen's Thief Sophos)

Hey, welcome! Celebrate de-lurking! If you were only about 13, I could see why you may not have enjoyed the QoA. Don't worry, we forgive you. ;) Good thing you tried KoA, or you would have missed out an the awesomeness that is QT.

Nope, haven't read it, but if there's a Sophos, it's been added to my TBR list. Thanks!

Oh, and completely off topic, but I adore your icon.

TEA!

Celebrate the drink of nerds everywhere! If you like to drink tea, you should read The Teashop Girl. It's a very cute MG story about a almost high school student working at a tea-shop.

Tea is a wonderful study and reading time beverage. Almost as good as coffee.

The Teashop Girls (sorry, missed the "s" before) is such a cute book, and it even takes place in my state's capital, which weirded me out a little at first (Stop talking about streets and places I've been to like a hundred times! It's creeping me out!). The author is Laura Schaefer. I hope you try it!

Welcome! (Even though I mostly lurk, myself.)

In case you don't already know: "sophos" is Greek for 'wise' or 'wise man', and "mirabilis" is Latin for 'wondrous, wonderful'.

I've heard that interpretation, but I've also heard it means skilled or clever.

It's a complicated word! The root Greek meaning is "skilled {in something}"/expert, but that something was frequently "political theory/philosophy" and wisdom in general. Hence "sages" like Solon are sophoi.

Of course it also can mean "clever" in the way that something in English that is clever might be a good thing, but might also be a sneaky, subtle thing. My dictionary gives the nice little saying: "to sophon ou sophia" (being {overly} clever is not wisdom).

Ah, that makes more sense. Thank you!

One question. Does Sophos have any relation to the name Sophia? It also means wisdom.

Yes, about the same relation in Greek that "wise" has to "wisdom" in English, or "clever" to "cleverness".

Since we're talking about the meanings of the words, note that "sophos" means (approximately) 'wise', not 'wisdom'. As [livejournal.com profile] ricardienne nicely put it,
The root Greek meaning is "skilled {in something}"/expert, but that something was frequently "political theory/philosophy" and wisdom in general)

Ah, now it all makes sense. Thank you!

Right, it's the same root. In ancient Greek (the only kind I know!) σοφός (feminine σοφή) is the adjective to which σοφία is the corresponding abstraction: "wise" and "wisdom" or "clever" and "cleverness." So sophia originally refers to a specific skill or craft, and then to wisdom and prudence more generally. From what I can tell, sophia only rarely had the connotation of sneakily clever that sophos often got (hence the proverb, which might be better translated as "being a wise guy is not [having] wisdom."

I figured they were from the same root. That makes sense. Thank you!

And as far as I can tell, Sophie is the French version of Sophia, correct?

I love etymology. This stuff is so cool.

Yay, welcome!!! Your icon makes me want tea now... Isn't it great finding random Sophos references? Our school gives free internet security, and what is it called? SOPHOS! It makes me very happy. Oooh, best name ever is Costis though, short for Constantinos, which means "constant or steadfast" awwwww, Costis!!! It's so perfect.

From: [identity profile] amolegere.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think Constance is probably the feminine version. I totaly found this out by accident when I was on wikipedia reading about a singer that I like, and it said his dad's name was Konstantinos "Kostas". So I jumped up and down happily then googled the meaning of Konstantinos ^.^

Speaking of Greek knowledge, I know there have been questions about who this Philonikes mystery character who is in 1 scene of TT and I had a potential light bulb moment that I would like an opinion on. So "Philo" in Greek I think means I love and Nike is victory, so is his name "I love victory"? In which case, of course Gen would be friends with him, because he loves winning. And then Gen yells "Philonikes" so he's basically yelling "I love victory" so is that him lolling over the fact that his plan is working just as he wanted?

there was a sophos reference in my classical studies class today! The prof was talking about sophomores, and how the word comes from sophos, for wise. I couldn't help grinning.

That's awesome! I love the surprise references, best part of being in Classics! My Greek textbook has a character names Xanthias, which sounds a lot like Xanthe so I looked it up and it's just the masculine form of Xanthe!!! So he's my new favorite character in the textbook.

Yay! Awesome major choice! You'll probably come up with a few familiar names, my favorite was when Galen was an answer on my final last year. Guaranteed at least one point on that test!

The first time I found out that the school's antivirus was called Sophos, I was a bit tempted to get it just for that. "Sophos is protecting my computer!" :P

I thought Costis might come from the same root as "constant", Latin for "standing firm". It's such a fitting name!

*hugs Costis*

Costis: Hey!

Lady Jane: Oh, so what if you don't like me.

Costis: Get off of me!

You know, I don't think a lot of people understood Queen of Attolia the first time they read it, or the 2nd of the 55th time they read it for that matter...it's a very emotionally complex book.

Ah! That's exactly how I discovered the books too! Except I got my books from the public library all four times. Now I have my own copies, you probably should too, not only because they're awesome, but also because we all have to whip them out every now and then in this community.

The Native Star is one of 3-4 books I'm currently reading. So far, not bad--I like the "Wild West with magicians" premise.

If you're interested in tea & looking for something to read in between mwt's awesome books, Laura Childs has a mystery series set in a tea shop in Charleston that's very fun and informative.
