Hello Sounisians!

So, the other day, I was just about going insane from gluing tiny triangles for a homework project with the song 'Hakuna Matata' stuck in my head, and a strange thought occurred to me:

I started thinking that Sophos is not all that different than Simba.  They both were made to feel like a dissapppointment and a failure and had the oppurtunity to escape responsibilities forever.

Simba could have stayed in Hakuna Matata-Land forever, just as Sophos could have had a relatively carefree life in Hanatkos fieldhouse.

But both Simba and Sophos chose, (with various amounts of persuasion) to return to the people (or lions) who needed a leader.

It wasn't until after all these revelations that I remembered that Sophos, as a king, became known as the  'Lion of Sounis.'  I thought it was kind of funny. :D

Anybody see any other similarities?

"with various amounts of persuasion"

(I think Simba had the harder time with the persuasion - he had to get hit over the head before he saw sense!)

But, you're right, both of them could have chosen their own happiness over the good of the people (lions) they had to lead.

Sophos got hit over the head! Or in the head, anyway.

Not that that was what made him realize.

But still. it happened! ;P

Yes, but Simba had a thick head, and had to be hit over the head with a stick to realize what he was supposed to do (which was take away the stick!!)

*apologizes* It's one of my favorite scenes from the movie ...

Interestingly, I do. I think Simba is a lot more of a smart aleck than Sophos, but the Lion King is one of my favorite movies, so I'm happy to entertain the idea of parallels between it and QT!

Simba was a spoiled rotten brat!! His father let him get away with anything!! Sophos' father raised Sophos with more respect - and told him that royalty had responsibility. Mufasa just left that to Zazu while Simba ran around like a wild thing!

Simba actually had some growing up to do. He never really learned what being King was all about.

Another difference: All Simba saw was the "yes, sire" part of being king, and he thought he would enjoy it. Sophos wanted no part of that kind of society.

Well, I don't think "oh,I just can't wait to be king" is his style, per se, but I'm sure he would enjoy some poem set to music .... or some Latin chant ...

Wow. Hadn't thought of that. Maybe Disney took some lessons from MWT. Or maybe one of their screenwriters is a fan of hers. Or maybe it's just a common idea (I like Sophos better than Simba, though).

Hanatkos Matata, everybody!

Ah. I have little siblings, too.

Granted, I have a big sister who loves Tangled so I've seen a lot of that. Just goes to show that some movies are for everybody. (On the other hand, there are some movies that shouldn't be for anybody)

Whoops. *cringe in embarrassment* It's hard to tell over the internet.

I like Treasure Planet (though that might be a little intense for smaller kids).

Oh, you should. It's much better than the book Treasure Island. I didn't like Treasure Island but I loved Treasure Planet. I own it but it's a VHS. =P

I'm taller than my big sister, too! ;D
On the other hand, one of my "little" brothers is taller than the both of us. =/

Of course, the Lion King is really Hamlet.

Yeah, it's loosely based off Hamlet but is based off Hamlet nevertheless.

I had a book that discussed that at one point, too. Actually, it was discussing all the different plotlines the first Harry Potter book fit into ... and went on to say that most stories are some variation on those plot lines mixed together!!

Yes! Philia, I just spent last week in English class watching the Lion King and comparing it to Hamlet. :)

Um, but of course my English class is usually MUCH more serious and rigorous...

Aahh, I love this connection! I totally see what you mean, although it's probably also a general pattern in hero's journey/coming of age/whatever stories (I'm looking forward to taking a closer look at the next post, by the way...). And now whenever I think of Hanaktos I'll think of Hakuna Matata, and vice versa! :)

Oh my, that is so neat!! I never even realized that, and we were just reading all about Sophos in Hanaktos fields... Now I won't be able to think of one without the other, either :)
