Uhhh...I was searching for a fanart of Gen that someone here drew (the one where he looks really cocky and is twirling something around his finger - it was a sketch) and I couldn't find it, so I googled "gen the thief" on the images search. I found this:

http://greenwillowblog.com/?p=1861

Some AWESOME artwork drawn up! *Sigh* if the right people got their hands on this series, it would be EPIC. The question is, do I want QT to go mainstream? I'm kinda happy with it being slightly obscure. There are also so many ways to TOTALLY mess the story up (dumbing it down for the masses) that make me nervous whenever anyone says, "This should be a movie!".

I'm half "OMG SQUEE!" and half, "Keep your PAWS off my favorite books!"

Opinions? Help with finding that fanart?

UPDATE:
Still haven't been able to find that pic...I think I'm getting obsessed with this... <:-/

I partly want to keep them all to myself, but I'd love to see a movie done right, too. (I don't even think it needs to be dumbed down for the masses; I think Hollywood needs to realize that people are smart and there's no need to condescend to them. And I have no faith in them doing that. And I'd definitely rather no movie than one badly done. End rant.)

I'm fairly certain there have been casting posts here - didn't MWT say once who she'd imagined as Gen?

Yeah, pretty much this. I usually consider myself optimistic, but... but... "Eagle of the Ninth" anyone? I mean, I'm glad it got more fans after the movie, but the fans gained weren't exactly the ones who would have liked the book for what the book was good for. If you know what I mean.

Yes, I saw the movie "The Eagle" and loved it, and when I read "Eagle of the Ninth" it was very different. I can see how disappointing that would be the other way around, for fans of the books. My favorite books that didn't translate the way I wanted into film were the "Chronicles of Narnia." I have to agree with the "no movie is better than a bad movie" crowd.

Also the one based on The Dark is Rising, and the ones based on Madeleine L'Engle books... Hollywood has a special talent sometimes for missing the point of beloved books.

THese are two I know of where Gen is flipping stuff with his fingers....I hope that helps!

I was kind of scarred-for-life about books and movies when I saw the way they murdered 'My Side of the Mountain'...I loved that book, but they killed Faithful in the movie and it was awful *sniff* But then again, Harry Potter and 'Holes' were great as far as staying true to the book....So, yeah, mixed feelings all around ;)

Any idea when it was posted? I was going to go and help you look but, my goodness, there were more than 200 posts tagged "fanart." More than a little overwhelming.

Yes. Yes. I think I know the one you mean. But I looked for it in the queen's thief deviantart gallery (http://queens-thief.deviantart.com/) and couldn't find it there... if it's the one I'm picturing.

At first I thought you might mean this one (http://rushstarfire.deviantart.com/gallery/4249843?offset=0#/d2wssz3), but then I realized I was mixing two up. Does it have a similar colour scheme to that one or something...?

Now I'm curious to find the one I think you mean...

Ack! I meant to say Frightful! Faithful is a cat with purple eyes. And a really ugly horse. Frightful is a Peregrine Falcon. To quote Gen, "Ouch!"

This may be sacrilege, but I want a QT movie even if it is awful... At the very least, I'm sure it would be pretty to look at and would give me plenty of material for trailers!

*is selfish and narrow-minded* XD

But honestly... Hollywood is doing a better job of adapting books into movies these days. The Hunger Games, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Coraline movies were awesome and very true to the books.

*Gasp!* I think it's about 50/50....I mean Ella Enchanted? Eragon? I think it depends on how involved the author is and how much say they have in how close the movie stays to the book...I would love to see a QT movie...but I would feel betrayed or something if it was awful, and I think it would be bad publicity for the books...But it would make awesome trailer - I'll give you that one! :)

Percy Jackson too. It was the first book, they were supposed to be 12, and we end up getting late teenagers. Plus Hades was totally mainstream, not at all like the character he was portrayed in the book.

Ugh.... that was me *points above*. I forgot to switch accounts.

The only movie I really liked that deviated quite away from the book was "How to Train Your Dragon", but that was because the animation and the plot itself was just downright awesome by itself. It wasn't exactly "based" on the book... more like "inspired" maybe. If we get an animated movie like that, or maybe even like "Howl's Moving Castle", I wouldn't mind so much.

Live action? Er... I have my doubts.

An animated movie would be wonderful, especially a traditionally-animated one (is that the right term?). The gods would work so much better that way, I think.

The Ella Enchanted movie was cute, but very lame compared to the book. And don't even get me started on Eargon... Though, my sister and I did get a good ten minute laugh out of the dragon egg that looked like a giant, blue jelly bean. XD

Personally, I feel you've gotta take the movie for what it is and the book for what it is. Writing and film are two very different mediums, and the story must be told differently when viewed through a different lens, so to speak. I don't mind the story being different, as long as it's still good. Right now, my favorite anime, Noir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcx6upBbaS0) (please ignore the awful dubbing), is being adapted into an American live-action series, and the fans are very upset that they're changing the thread of the story a little and adding male characters. Since there are no male characters in the original, I understand that change. As for the story changes, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt till I see it. I'm hoping they'll surprise me! I'd rather see a film team try their hand at it and screw it up, then my favorite anime never get a chance to shine as a live-action series.

There is the chance of a bad movie hurting the book, but Hollywood is notorious for ruining books when they make them into movies. If I didn't like the movie, I wouldn't assume it was the original author's fault.

Ella Enchanted was the worst book adaptation I've ever seen. I still want to know how they thought that would be good.

I laughed a few times, but it was sooo corny that I couldn't take a minute of it seriously. The book was deep and inspiring, while the movie was just plain stupid. The script writers missed the point of the book entirely.

Aw, no, you're not selfish and narrow-minded. Even I my personal (and maybe selfish) reasons of why I'm reluctant to see a movie.

Like I said above, although I know the benefits of pooling in more fans, I really like the way our fanbase currently is. I mean, Sounis to me isn't just a bunch of random people on the internet; you guys are really cool people! And if a badly done movie is going to bring in a hoard of giddy fangirls whose sole purpose on Sounis is to analyze Gen's abs during his ten jaw-dropping shirtless moments in the movie... Sounis just won't be the same anymore. =(

From: [identity profile] ninedaysaqueen.livejournal.com
I was gonna say something intelligent, but then you said something about shirtless Gen and ahhh...

Heh, to be fair, we spend a lot of time ourself's ogling Stenides biceps and fighting over who gets to marry Costis. :) As long as it's all in good fun, I don't mind some giddy fan-girling. It's also fair to say that film converted fans could be just as intelligent and fun as pre-film Sounisians. Good stories attract good people!

I may be simple, but a movie is a movie and Holy Hephestia, do I want a QT movie! :D

Of course we are! XD

Sounis - Where even our foolishness is superior. :)

But yeah... I know what you mean. In the Leverage fandom, there's been a few lines drawn due to the lack of respect shown to the actor who plays Eliot Spencer. However, the fans in the Doctor Who comms are very respectful, even if we all do love David Tenant. :)

All I have to say is, yes. Sounis is awesome. We have our silly fangirl moments, but we're all respectful and intelligent. Usually :D

Haha! Lol, true, and we have our fair share of gushing too. I think all of us at one point or another mention Gen's being hot and all... and there's always Costis. Haha.

Well, there's that, but what I actually was referring to was more of what happened with "Eagle of the Ninth". The book was so rich and beautiful, but there were movie fans who didn't bother with the book and basically liked it only because it was... "Brokeback Rome", so to speak. And if you watch the movie, the personalities of the characters were so dramatically changed from the book... it basically took out what I loved reading about it.

I would take a mini-series over a Hollywood movie any day. There are so many little plot intricacies that I think would lend themselves well to a mini-series format, that would otherwise be lost if it was adapted as a movie. Also, I love mini-series, and television in general. I've found that tv adaptations let me down less often than movies do. You can never trust Hollywood and their big budgets and bottom lines.

Agreed. A mini-series would be stellar. The Emma mini-series is soooo much better than any of the movies.

Yeah if you accept it as a completely different entity from the book it can be entertaining, but the first time I saw it was a huge shock. I was so excited because it was one of my favourite books growing up. And I was sorely disappointed.

I agree that The Thief would work better as a film than the others. Considering the difference in film and book, if in QoA they focused more on the political conflict at the romance part it COULD be done well.... hmmm.

What I would REALLY like is to read the whatever-parts-of-a-script or treatment that MWT wrote when she went to shop The Thief around Hollywood.

Because that would be very, very interesting. I bet my socks. All of them. :)

As for an actual movie... I think I would prefer an animated one. Especially if it was traditional western animation, or anime. There's just more chance of it being good... And I think The Thief could make a good movie. It's pretty linear, and it's mostly one group of people doing one thing together, with interesting things happening in the group dynamic, which seems perfect. There'd be plenty of chance to get to know all the characters and watch them mis-judge Gen at their peril and all the good group dynamics and secrets going on with Gen and Sophos and Ambiades. And there would be lots of Gen whining and carrying on. :) And having Gen's secret identity would be simple because we're not even in his head. And the scenes in the maze and temple under the Aracthus would be so awesome and creepy. And everyone would cry when Pol died.
I don't know how they would do The Queen of Attolia though. Not without giving away the love story much earlier on? Movies aren't generally made for re-watching, right? I think the audience would have to be, well, shipping Gen and Attolia for enough of the movie that when the ending happens it feels right and satisfying, otherwise it might seem to come out of nowhere. Because how would you do all those subtle hints in a movie. Although, I don't know anything, so maybe it would actually be easier to do that kind of hinting when you're looking at actors, and if they have chemistry than there it is. So it could actually be harder to not make it super obvious. But maybe they could build in tension between Attolia and Gen that could go either in the direction of violence or love, and leave it to the end to show which way it'll go....

I was thinking something about this too. The movies I love to re-watch are animated ones, but there are also psychological thrillers like "Memento" or "Inception" that I adore, and NEED to watch several times before I can get a good understanding. Now that I think about it, the experience is sorta like MWT's books where the clever twists will make you want to flip to the beginning of the book and start over again immediately. Now if Hollywood can bring The Thief on the same level as movies like those, (or make a really fun one like "How To Train Your Dragon" ^^), then I'll be a happy bunny. ^__^

I would love for the series to be made into movies because it would draw in lots of new readers to the books. The more people reading awesome books like these the better. That said, I'd never watch the movie myself. I have certain stories that I want to keep my first experience with. As in, however I encountered it first is the only way I want to encounter it. I have movies I love that are based on books but I won't read them. The story in my head is the story I want to keep. This series is definitely one in which the look and feel of everything in my head is the only image of it that I want.

Plus, it would make a lot of money for Ms. Turner and then she could travel to every ThiefCon that Sounis puts together. :)
