So, I have one question. Is there anything fancy one has to do for the camera to work on the site, beyond have it plugged in? (This from someone who finds even the simplicity of Skype somewhat baffling.)

Nope. Just make sure your computer recognizes the camera(as in, make sure it's actually installed after you plug it in). Once you click the link the site will ask you for your name(include your Lj name so we make the connection) a little box will ask for permission to use the camera. Then you get to see yourself before clicking "I'm ready to broadcast". I chose this conference host specifically so all you'd have to do is show up. No registration, no hoops to jump through. Just come!!
