King of Attolia question
May. 18th, 2012 01:46 pmHi! I discovered the Queen's Thief books a couple of months ago and fell in love with them. I just have a quick question on something that happened in King of Attolia.
After Sejanus's arrest, Attolia mentions that all the barons have been trooping though her bedroom to take a look at the king. Why are the barons doing that? Is it because Eugenides exiled Dite and imprisoned Sejanus? Or is it because the attendants have been telling everyone that Eugenides framed Dite for trying to assassinate him and then forced Sejanus to confess and save his brother? I'm not clear on how much the attendants have been gossiping about the king.
Thanks!

For the first one, I think the barons were really curious about the whole situation, and they sort of wanted to visit Gen just to judge him personally, to see the man behind the plan. But Gen just kept preening at them, and it really irritated Attolia, because it made him look useless. Now a rumour started circulating that it was Attolia who was behind the plan all along, and that Gen was just her puppet.
For the second one, I think there was a debate on how injured he really was, so I thought that the barons were curious about that too.
I think when Sejanus was still an attendant, there was a lot of gossip about Gen, but after he went away the remaining attendants just sort of kept quiet. Especially after they realized that he was a lot closer to their queen than they initially thought, and that Gen *knew* just about everything they had been up to.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. I'd let the other Sounisians add more =D.

Date: 5/19/12 05:58 pm (UTC)I just have to point out that Gen, however much a liar he is, DID promise Attolia he wouldn't interfere in her reign. True to his word (this time at least) he brought down the greatest local threat to the stability of her rule and sat back acting a farce, making her look all the stronger.
It's these little questions that tickle at us and drive us read the series again and again. And the best part is: it's all there. Go read it again, you'll see it. There are twelve metric tons of story waiting to be unearthed. It's all buried in what's unsaid. This is why we need a Sounis! So we can dig together.
