Hi! I discovered the Queen's Thief books a couple of months ago and fell in love with them. I just have a quick question on something that happened in King of Attolia.
After Sejanus's arrest, Attolia mentions that all the barons have been trooping though her bedroom to take a look at the king. Why are the barons doing that? Is it because Eugenides exiled Dite and imprisoned Sejanus? Or is it because the attendants have been telling everyone that Eugenides framed Dite for trying to assassinate him and then forced Sejanus to confess and save his brother? I'm not clear on how much the attendants have been gossiping about the king.
Thanks!

Hey, and welcome!! Just to let you know, I looove your username! It's based on the book, right?

My impression from that scene is that the barons were either at awe with the king for being able to bring down the house of Erondites, or they wanted to see just how injured he was. For the first one, I think the barons were really curious about the whole situation, and they sort of wanted to visit Gen just to judge him personally, to see the man behind the plan. But Gen just kept preening at them, and it really irritated Attolia, because it made him look useless. Now a rumour started circulating that it was Attolia who was behind the plan all along, and that Gen was just her puppet.

For the second one, I think there was a debate on how injured he really was, so I thought that the barons were curious about that too.

I think when Sejanus was still an attendant, there was a lot of gossip about Gen, but after he went away the remaining attendants just sort of kept quiet. Especially after they realized that he was a lot closer to their queen than they initially thought, and that Gen *knew* just about everything they had been up to.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I'd let the other Sounisians add more =D.

You're welcome. ^^

I know! Those books are some of my favourites, on par with QT. ^__^ There seem to be a lot of underrated great books, though.

Hey, Leng - Don't you need the 'Dream Man' icon to talk about Mairelon? ;D

I just read Mairelon the Magician and the Magicians Ward for the first time last month. Lots of fun! :D I think your question is pretty much answered now, so I have nothing to add. Welcome to the awesomest community for the awesomest books ever!

Welcome! I was under the impression that the attendants had been gossiping about everything that occurred between Eugenides and the Erondites brothers... Gen figuring out who directed the assassins in the garden, framing Dite, and convincing Sejanus to confess in such a way that it left him no hope of retracting his confession or saving his family's house. But I think "gossip" might be too negative for this instance... more like they were recounting the events in awe-filled tones, and it was such a surprise to everyone who had heard them really gossiping previously that the barons thought there might be some truth to the stories after all. But, of course, Gen's "preening" throws them completely off the scent.

I love discussing KoA. I think it's my favorite of the books. Thank you for asking this question!

Welcome, you're among kindreds here! I'm excited to add Mairelon the Magician to the TBR stack. The QT series has taught me the worth of unsung masterpieces.
I just have to point out that Gen, however much a liar he is, DID promise Attolia he wouldn't interfere in her reign. True to his word (this time at least) he brought down the greatest local threat to the stability of her rule and sat back acting a farce, making her look all the stronger.

It's these little questions that tickle at us and drive us read the series again and again. And the best part is: it's all there. Go read it again, you'll see it. There are twelve metric tons of story waiting to be unearthed. It's all buried in what's unsaid. This is why we need a Sounis! So we can dig together.

Hi there, and Welcome! SOunis is a lovely place to hang out! I think that the attendant were going about thelling others not to underestimate the King - remember when Costis said something similar, and the other guards said that he sounded like the attendant? (Sorry, I don't have the book, so that's about as specific as I can be right now...) So anyway, I think the barons wanted to see what had changed that the attendants who previously had no respect for the king were suddenly so wary and in awe of him. Great question!

You are reading 'The People of Sparks?' I loved the CIty of Ember and The People of Sparks when I was a kid! I heard they made a movie and murdered it, and there were going to be sequels. I read the third one, The Prophet of Yonwood I think it was called, but it had definitely lost something. Enjoy!
