This is [livejournal.com profile] rosaleeluann 's idea!

What are your favorite short story anthologies?  Instead of Three Wishes: Magical Short Stories by Megan Whalen Turner, of course!  (Huh, I never really noticed the subtitle before.)  What others do you like?

(hope this works--I've been trying all afternoon to get a new wireless router working, and I'm about ready to toss it out the window.  Then drive over it with the car.)

I read The Rumpelstiltskin Problem by Vivian Vande Velde when I was about 13, and I still get a kick out of it every time I re-read it (which is often, as it's quick and fun). To quote the back cover: "In an attempt to make sense of this wayward fairy tale, Vivian Vande Velde provides six alternative versions of the classic account, each of which is far more intriguing and revealing than the original." Not to mention amusing. My friends and I still use the phrase, "Sideways... between the particles!" when trying to describe things that don't make a lot of sense. :)

I also enjoyed the Firebirds Soaring anthology... the last story in particular - Something Worth Doing by Elizabeth E. Wein. It ties in to her new book Code Name Verity and I recommend it!

Also, the Lord Peter short stories and The Wimsey Papers (letters from one character to another - with lots of interesting historical context - that Sayers published in a newspaper. It was very hard to get a hold of a copy of these until someone posted transcripts of them here! http://commonplace-sam.livejournal.com/53631.html Before, I had to seek out rare photo copies of the actual newspapers, and those were difficult to read. Gotta love the internet.)

YOU ARE VERY WELCOME! :) :) I love sharing The Wimsey Papers, since they were "missing" for so long...

It was indeed a very good idea. Well done!

I had a very similar experience with The Rumpelstiltskin Problem. It's just so much fun! :)

And thanks for the link to The Wimsey Papers! I look forward to reading them. :) Interestingly enough, my first introduction to Sayers and Wimsey was in the form of the complete Lord Peter short stories. ;))

One of my favoritest books EVER is the illustrated short story collection Tales from Outer Suburbia. Its very much an artists book, the stories really center around the visuals, but don't let that stop you! The stories are really fun and thought provoking.

I also like Robin McKinley's short stories, in the Water and Fire anthologies.

Oh, and Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut.

I don't read that many short stories, but I just finished a wonderful collection by Susannah Clarke called The Ladies of Grace Adieu.

Adding some Vivian Vande Velde love, _Curses, Inc. And Other Stories_ is excellent; it was the first thing I read by her.

Anything by Ruth Manning-Sanders--dragons, ghosts, witches, kings & queens, folk takes from around the world, etc.--especially when illustrated by Robin Jacques, as most of them are.

Esther Friesner's anthologies, especially the _Chicks In Chain Mail_ series.

Manly Wade Wellman's eerie Appalachian Silver John tales, in either _Who Fears The Devil?_ or _John the Balladeer_ [same collection, re-titled].

anything by Zenna Henderson

That's enough to be going on with.

Great topic, Rosie!
