Hello! I have a (stupid) question to pose to all you Sounisians!
In KoA after the assassination attempt when Costis comes to Eugenides and asks for help in saving the guards from the queen, Gen tells him the archaic, etc, etc, Costis worries that Teleus won't be able to remember the invocation because it's unfamiliar and Archaic, but doesn't worry that he himself may forget it.
Do you think that Archaic language was part of his education?
Because that would be cool.
That's all :)

Well, we know that Costis had a liberal education (there's the scene where he can sort of keep up with Eugenides as he talks poetry and the gods). But I don't think we know what kind of background Teleus had (and, intriguingly: Costis doesn't know either in spite of all the scuttlebutt that must go around the barracks. Teleus has made his own absolutely unassailable status as captain of the Queen's Guard.)

I wonder if Teleus knew the phrase not because he knows archaic or even because he has a very good memory, but because he heard it over and over again when Eugenides was the one in the cell. It may be that Teleus knows what the prayer signifies more than Costis does.

If Teleus knows what the invocation means to Gen and Attolia, that might also explain his reluctance to accept the King's help.

Eugenides does pick Costis to be the next Thief, which to me implies that Costis has hidden depths. Because personally I don't see it. Thief's need to be cunning, independent and highly skilled, which to me Costis doesn't really seem. But I trust Eugenides' judgment, so that leaves me feeling that there must be more to Costis than Ms. Turner has chosen as yet to reveal.

Here's hoping for a next book about Costis being an incredible Thief/spy against the Mede!

If you did, then so did I!! I'm interested to see the reasoning behind this idea, not least because MWT is sneaky but does foreshadow stuff.

I'm think we've talked about this on Sounis before, but I'm not sure where. Here's where I see it from the book:

P360 in the hardback of King of Attolia, the last page of Chapter 12
"The King chuckled.
'Will you serve me and my god?'
'I will, Your Majesty.'
'Then come out,' said the king, helping him, 'knowing that you'll never die of a fall unless the god himself drops you.'"

Yeah, I think there was a discussion of this a while back, but this is also what I thought. Hmm... it's hard to think of Costis as a thief, especially with that honour of his!

I guess I'm just reluctant to see Costis as a thief, because it would sort of solidify that Gen's no longer the thief... and it's just sad that that part of him is gone. Even as a king, I still have full faith in him that he can juggle both. I mean, it's GEN!

Hi! I'm not actually a member, but I have been following you guys for some time. I am a huge fan of these books and always looking for new povs. I was reading this discussion and was totally startled by the concept of Gen making Costis the next thief. I remember the part that heiros_acumen quoted, but I think I translated this part in the same way that most of you did. So my question is, WHY would Gen make Costis the thief? Gen was the thief of Eddis, is he making him the thief of Eddis or Attolia? We find out in CoK that there is not going to be anymore Eddis, so that would imply that he is the thief of Attolia. I guess that would explain Gen's detaching him from the guard in KoA and the total lack of Costis in CoK. I guess I am just trying to understand Gen, and subsequently MWT's, purpose in making Costis the next theif. If that is indeed what she was trying to do. I'm sure you guys can shed some light on this startling concept. Thanks
