[identity profile] 1221bookworm.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] queensthief

Hi everybody!! J

So, so, so, since NPR is doing a top YA favorites list, Ms. Turner suggested that we have our own Sounis’ top YA favorites list.  So here is a post to list those favorite YA books.

I will tally up all the titles, and post what books got the most votes.

CLOSED  The Deadline is Wednesday, July 4th.   CLOSED

I will comment on the bottom to say that any other additions will not be counted.

I do ask that we conduct this within a couple of guidelines to make it easier to do up a tally when we are done.

1. Please do not use numbers in the list.  Just start each line with a title.  And please have a blank line above and below your list.

2. Please do not include “the” at the beginning of a series name.  (If it is the book title, that’s fine.)  So “The Farsala Trilogy”  is just “Farsala Trilogy.”  “The Giver” is fine.   It will make it easier to count up later.

3. For our purposes, YA includes any book that you think a 12-18 year old would enjoy/is targeted toward that audience.  I will trust your judgment, and will not kick any titles off the list (unless someone puts “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” by Dr. Seuss!! J

4. Don’t forget to put authors, so we all can look them up, and enjoy them, too.

5. Please limit yourself to 5 choices (I know, I know, I’m so mean!!) J

Books/series will get one vote for every recommendation.  For reasons of sanity, I can’t count them under “I 2nd the recommendation” comments.  Please include them in your own list.

So have fun, and let’s have a great big Sounis rec party!!  (You get extra cookies if you share your criteria in your post, and maybe we can convince Elle to bring over the oreo truffle from Chatzy!

So, the criteria for me was,well...Let's just say these are my five favorite series of all time. Out of all the YA I have read(or books that would appeal to 12-18 years olds) These are the best I've found. I know that means my vote is a little skewed, but I can only vote based on my experience. And I really love these books! So where are my cookies??

Oh I loved Plain Kate! They changed the cover though, and I'm not so fond of that. I've never read Incarceron, but I keep meaning to.

Oh, I absolutely love the Riddle-Master trilogy.

Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
Monster Blood Tattoo by D. M. Cornish
Percy Jackson & the Olympians by Rick Riordan
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
Matt Cruse Series by Kenneth Oppel

I chose these because they are my favourite series of all-time (minus the Queen's Thief which I left off only because everyone here has read them and I wanted to try to list series that others might not have read. Otherwise it would be on here for sure). I've read every series here multiple times and loved them even more with each reading.

The influence of those books (plus THE FORGOTTEN BEASTS OF ELD) on my teenaged imagination and the development of my writing style cannot possibly be exaggerated.

Also, the Book One cliffhanger is the WORST EVER.

Oh, thank you for nominating the Cornish series! I almost did myself and felt terrible that I couldn't, so I'm glad somebody else did.

ETA: I am still waiting for somebody to write epic Sebastipole/Europe fanfic, though. I fear I may be waiting a while.

I just read JELLICOE ROAD a couple of months ago. AMAZING. I can't wait to read more Marchetta.

[livejournal.com profile] loquaciousquark told me about them and she was absolutely right - they're pretty much the most perfect high fantasy I've ever read.

I got the first book from the library to see if the series was worth a shot - as soon as I finished it, I ran to order all three books. Which are... out of print. How can that be?!

BARTIMAEUS. YES.

Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
Immortals Series by Tamora Pierce
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
What Happened to Lani Garver by Carol Plum-Ucci

It is really hard to only pick five. I'm assuming The Queen's Thief and Harry Potter are both sort of a given, and hence don't need to be said.

Inkheart Trilogy by Cornelia Funke

It's interesting that you suggest the Lioness quartet. I think it's probably the least well-written of all Pierce's work, and I find myself torn because I'm quite fond of Alanna but in her own story I feel like she really starts to delve into Mary Sue territory. It is still a good read, though. I love how each series adds dimension to side characters in other series.

So many choices!

Feeling Sorry for Celia, Finding Cassie Crazy and Being Bindi McKenzie by Jaclyn Moriaty (does this series have a title?)
The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson
Tortall books by Tamora Pierce (or if that doesn't count as a series, the Immortals quartet)
Sharing Knife quartet by Lois McMaster Bujold
Tales of Chrestomanci by DWJ

I debated a while about Harry Potter, but I feel like it's such an obvious one that tops practically every list...

I didn't realise we were including Megan's books! I did my list before reading everyone else's so I didn't get influenced and I assumed that was a given. Hmm, I may have to rethink this...

My criteria are books that either I loved as a teenager and reread over and over, or books I found recently (within the last six months) and have either already reread or am planning to reread. And I'd still count myself as in the YA age range, so.

Aaah Bartimaeus I forgot about him! And Artemis Fowl! Only five is so difficult.

I had to think hard to decide between the Immortals and Protector of the Small.

I'm feeling guilty for asking everyone else to pick five when I know I probably can't. I think . . . maybe I'd pick . . .

Huckleberry Finn, Twain
Feed, MT Anderson
Perilous Gard, Pope
Howl's Moving Castle
and . . .

I'm going to save my fifth one because I know that as soon as I finish this list I am going to think of another one that is even better and hate myself.
Also, unlike PigRescuer, I don't care if I don't list my books!

Yep-pretty much what I did.
