They found some actual medieval lingerie. Now our sartorial speculations have a, ahem, *firmer* foundation in reality:

Now I'm speculating wildly, not so much about Gen's underthings, but about Irene & Eddis. You just know Gen had some made special, in "cheerful" colors.

;)

These are women's from 17thc Italy, but I feel these are more Gen's speed. :P

ETA: Anybody want to join me in snickering over the idea of a pair of drawers embroidered with "may you be successful in your endeavors"? Hee.

I AM SNICKERING.

you know Eddis had some made for Attolia as a wedding gift, and the first time Gen saw them he ended up laughing so hard that it completely ruined the mood. And then Eddis received a very curt note from Attolia about her sense of humor.

heh heh heh.

And it traveled the diplomatic channels through Ornon! So Eddis sent back a pair embroidered with sheep.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

and one day Ornon bleats under his breath at Attolia in passing and she knows, SHE KNOWS WHO DID IT, she knows who to blame for why Gen was laughing so hard he fell out of bed and landed on his bad ribs and was out of commission for the next three days.

and then Ornon had to deal with sand in his dinner.

And then Ornon draws Gen aside one day to say, "About your wife's underwear, Your Majesty . . ."

Which leads to many rumors among Gen's attendants and the Guards At Large about why the Eddisian ambassador knows more about the Queen's undergarments than the King seems to.

It also starts some comments about the Queen's undergarments in general, but those tend to die quickly because nobody REALLY wants to picture the Queen in her underthings. It just--doesn't work like it would with a normal woman, as Aris points out.

Which Costis tries to squash, but really, once underwear are involved, there is no stopping the gossip train.

Goddesses do tend to favor either total nudity or artistic draping. There's no in between.

So of course eventually Gen and Attolia become aware of the gossip, and she tells him to ignore it, so of course the next morning instead of the royal flag of Attolia flying from the palace roof, it's a beautifully embroidered pair of lady's drawers in the traditional blue and gold of Attolia with a strategically placed royal crest.

(I laughed aloud and clapped with sheer delight at that one. Brilliant! :-) )

And Attolia says, "Those aren't mine," which leads Gen to say, "I really wouldn't know, would I?" Then he brushes some invisible lint off his sleeve and says, "But they could be, if you wanted them to be."

(I laughed aloud and clapped with sheer delight at that one. Brilliant! :-) )

Thanks! :D

How wonderful!

I can imagine Attolian monograms on the underwear, worn under brocade.

But of course Gen would have spent his childhood getting his knickers worn out and torn by climbing in odd places...
