From Megan Whalen Turner:

Do you read German? Korean? Chinese? Thai? Japanese? Indonesian?  Do you know someone who might like a copy of my books in these languages?  Or have you even considered collecting editions of books you can't actually read just because the covers are pretty?  (In the case of the Japanese editions, because they have interior illustrations that are pretty, too?)
If so, please consider coming to the booksigning on Wednesday August 8, 2012 at Anderson's books in Naperville.  I'll be giving away a free copy of the each of the books pictured  below.

Extra points if you can say what language each is.

Holy cow. I am currently bemoaning that I don't live in Naperville. They're all so pretty!

Languages: German, Greek(?), Indonesian (I cheated w/Google Translate), Korean(?), Chinese (or maybe Japanese), Japanese (or maybe Chinese).

Using the (probably incorrect) languages ascribed to each book, my favorite covers are the Indonesian King of Attolia (so Gen!) and the Chinese Thief.

The second to last is Chinese, and the last is Japanese.

So I guessed correctly? How exciting! I'm so bad at being able to differentiate between Chinese and Japanese.

um, AWESOME?

First, German. Last, Japanese. I think second-to-last is Chinese, and the one before that maybe Thai... no, no, wait, it has the round characters... Korean! The second is... what, Greek? Not sure about the third... but oh, are those covers pretty-ful!

...and I totally could have enlisted the help of my language-guru sister, who would've had the answers within seconds... but I didn't. ;)

Last is definitely Japanese. Katakana betrays all. Second last is Chinese (because although there are characters that I can recognise from Japanese, there's not a hint of kana scripts). Third last is Korean. First is German. I have nfi with books 2 and 3 - I'll check other people's answers once I've posted this.

Also: I wish I was anywhere near Naperville. I've been wanting to get my hands on the JP versions for aaages, just to see what they've had to do sentence-structure wise during translation

It's Gen! With his anti-gravity slippers on. How ELSE do you think he gets all that sneaking done?

Gen jumping out of St Basil's in Moscow? Maybe he stole something from there?

I'm going with Thai for number 2. It's definitely not Greek. I think a big clue is that the options are listed in the first sentence of the post.

I searched at so many bookstores in Tokyo for Japanese copies, but no one had them. :( One offered to special order, but I wasn't going to be there long enough.

Lol, I find it funny that in the Indonesian versions, Gen is lighter than Attolia. XD But they're BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

The Chinese one looks like it's set in Russia?

Of course the Japanese are also so so so pretty.

And I like kid!Gen in the Korean one. I don't think I've seen Gen that small, other than in the Thief! short story.

The Thai one confused me for a second. The way the symbols are written on the title weren't familiar to me, but the blurb gave it away. XD

I love seeing covers of books I love in other languages. I remember when Shannon Hale posted all the different covers on her blog of all her books. It's just wonderful to see the artwork / interpretation of other countries. =D

Hey, did you notice our shared guy Sophos peeking around Gen in the Korean one(I think)? LOL, the magus looks like DUmbledore and Pol just looks scary (at least I hope that's pol, and not Ambiades!)

Oh that was our shared guy Sophos?? XD I wasn't sure. Lol, magus looks like Dumbledore and Pol looks like Hagrid! I think Ambiades is the one at the back, but his head is cut off by the gate. XD

Oh, I see now. Ambiades got his head cut off. How tragic XD I also love how confidently Gen is riding at the head of the group....I guess his hatred of horses is less than his love of being in the spotlight!

OOOOHHHHHH!!!!!

I'm glad you brought up that riding thing. I remember in The Thief, Gen's horse apparently doesn't take directions from its rider, but directions from the horse in front of it, that's why the magus is always at the front. But Gen's at the front now. Ooh... spotlight.

The instant I saw Pol on the cover I thought of Little John from Robin Hood. Or possibly Brian Blessed... :D

Oh. Okay. You know, I'm just depressed. :,(

The Japanese covers look so pretty! They all look awesome. It would be so cool to try and read it in another language //while having your own TT copy near by of course!

Oh, The Magus looks so epic with that beard.... in that one cover of the TT. Checkers you still up for that ;-P

Its German, Thai, Bahasa Indonesian, Korean, Chinese and Japanese.
Being Asian helps identify languages especially when I like multiculturalism. So these are all the different languages the books are translated in? Cool. I'm just surprised at how many Asian translated versions there are. I always wonder how do books get translated to other languages.

Just a suggestion for them to try to get a Bahasa Malaysian version out - language is similar to Indonesian. I think they like it especially when the country is much influence by royalty because monarchy still exist to the point that all businesses basically have to put up portraits of the Royals in their offices, and other things. (Ha! Imagine Gen and Irene XD) Actually, I think that why I personally enjoy these books more, perhaps my mindset is still a bit ancient..., when I read these books I kept picturing the palaces of the country and they all do dress in canary! Perhaps that why it got translated, minus Chinese, all the other Asian countries still have royal families. I don't know as much for Europe.

Oh my Hephestia, those are so beautiful. I'm drooooooling over here (far, far too far from Naperville). Have a wonderful time, mwt and lucky ones!

It's also cool that a few of the editions gave the series a name. (Die Legenden von Attolia! oooOO0oohh...)

The first is German. The second is NOT Greek (I can read Greek althought I cannot understand it...and that is no language I can read). The third is...I don't know. Hindu? The fourth is Korean. The fifth is Chinese and appears to be about a wizard! And the last are the Japanese edititions.

I wish I could be there to see these in person!

Anderson's is an awesome bookstore, but, best of all is the pizza place next door. My hunky hubby insisted on going there for authentic Chicago pizza before Duckon a couple of years ago. [The pizza's great, but pricey. We weren't about to leave the left-overs, so I got to be impressively creative with multiple layers of ziploc baggies, plastic bags, & to-go boxes, wrapped in his clothes. The left-overs made a super dinner at home.]
