That is a great title. Much catchier than "Utah Thiefcon 2013: The Most Wholesome Night EVAR" even though that's exactly what it was. So much love and goodness going on that I can't even.
It all started with an email from Megan. If you've ever received an email from the president of the United States (which, of course, most of you have), then you have some idea of my reaction:
1. Stare at inbox and say duuuude.
2. Go ahead and open that email!
3. Read it. Five times.
4. Spend way longer than necessary formulating a reply. Be solicitous but not pesky, straightforward but without adding pressure. Above all, keep it brief!
5. Call/text other members of Sounis and friends and family for advice and help. Keep the squeeing in peoples' ears to a minimum.
6. Casually name drop whenever possible. "Oh, did I mention that I'm exchanging emails with Megan Whalen Turner? Yes, I'm planning a fan event for her...."
7. Do your best to reach every fan possible through facebook, twitter, and of couse the great Sounis livejournal community.
8. Feel just like Oprah Winfrey helping to make dreams come true!
9. Act like you have it all together and like it's no big whoop. :D
After a few weeks of planning, the night of the big event came. We stopped by the venue before picking up Megan to drop off
rosaleeluann and to make sure everything was in order. Most of the fans were already there, setting up and making things awesome. Thanks, guys! You are the BEST!
By the time we came back with Megan, everything was ready to go. A circle of chairs were set up with a big, comfy chair for Megan and
bookishbabe was kind (and brilliant) enough to provide knitting! Megan came in, sat down, started knitting, and totally owned the night! We didn't have to do any of the activities I came up with. We just sat around her in a cluster of love and adoration, beaming at her and hanging on every word. She talked to us like we were old friends--as interested in us as we were with her--and created a fun, friendly atmosphere. Because that's how our girl rolls, yo.

We went around the room (with a dinner break part way through) and everyone got to introduce themselves and explain how they became a fan. It was really fun to hear each person's story and to hear Megan's comments in return. She is such a pro--witty and fun and totally chill. It was awesome.

See that guy on the far right at the top of the group of people? He's wearing a hook made out of foil. Instead of a cheese head, he's a hook head. Sweet, no?

I feel awful that I didn't get better pictures of the food, but there was too much going on. There were the usual yummy breads and spreads and salads and so forth, but also homemade spanakopita, little smokies, oranges, gingerbread cake with butter cream sauce, cookies, and flourless chocolate cake. Someone also brought some amazing take-out that I totally chowed down on. Flavored rice with lamb? I don't know, but it was good. So thanks to everyone who brought grub! It was great!

eatslikeahuman as Hermione's Gift (his term, the punk) made us Italian sodas to order. I could use a raspberry white chocolate one right now or a caramel hazelnut one...

After dinner, we had a question and answer period. It was awesome and there were stories and laughs and things that can't really be retold.
bookishbabe tried her best to get us some info on the next book. She really went to bat for us, people! But all we got was the bit about the elephants and the narrator for the last book. Oh, the agony!
Towards the end of the Q&A, guess who showed up? My mom and dad! After weeks of hearing about the event, they could not stay away! So they came to see what the deal was and to take some pictures and then of course they stuck around to eat some tasty vittles. My sister,
the_bon and I thought it was hilarious and adorable and we love them forever.
Then we had a group shot. Like I said. Wholesome. (I see you
in_my_niteshirt)

At the very end Megan signed our books. Hey look, there's
rosaleeluann,
kate_coombs,
bookishbabe, and
heatherzundel! I love our peeps. (that's my dad in the background, isn't he adorbs?)

One young fan dressed as Gen (see the bling on her belt) posing with Megan. A dream come true for a young fan! (Speaking of, I had that young fan stand in line for me to get my books signed while I cleaned up and she had the nerve to have them signed in HER name! I think that costume really went to her head, the cheeky little thief!)

Me, Gen, Megan,
eatslikeahuman, and Moira (who kept telling me not to offend the Gods, thanks so much).

bookishbabe's socks. On one side, you see sheep. On the other side, whoa! Where did Ornon's sheep go?!

AND NOW....drumroll please...the pièce de résistance! I asked Rosie to make us a simple sketch poster of Gen and Irene with the faces cut out so we could take pics, but she went the extra millionth mile and made us THIS:

the_bon and her baby! He is such a cute Gen!

I think Attolia must be trying out for "Fiddler on the Roof" in this one.

I posted all the ones I have, even the crummy ones because even if the pose doesn't work, THE PICTURE IS STILL FUNNY! And I got to take the poster home to use forever and ever. ATTN: Thiefcon attendees, if you have a photo of yourself or anyone else with the poster, PLEASE POST, DARN IT! WE MUST NOT DENY THE WORLD COMEDY GOLD! A big thanks to Rosie for her masterpiece.
And a big thanks to everyone who participated! Stay tuned for the next installment: Life, the Universe, and Everything 2013: A symposium for writers featuring Megan Whalen Turner and her groupies! There will be artwork, a panel recap, a keynote recap, a picture of a chicken bone, and so much more!

Just--I'M SO PROUD OF YOU, I guess? In your growth as an artist? From the stuff of yours that I remember? I'M JUST SAYING YOUR TALENT HAS ONLY INCREASED AND YOU MAKE BEAUTIFUL ARTS AND I AM HAPPY FOR YOU. :-)

When I arrived home I did indeed find the rest of Ornon's sheep. You're never gonna believe where they've been.
