Okay, I know I am terrorising this place, but I cannot help but wonder. In CoK, Sophos said that Pol did not teach him how to fight off a table. Does that mean that he cannot fight the table, like opponents, or does that mean that he has toppled over onto a table and is unable to respond because he is in such a position?

I always read it as he couldn't fight off the table like it was an opponent.

I've always read it as Sophos not knowing how to fight a table (I believe Rupert of Hentzau had the same problem) but now that you mention it I can see it being read both ways.

I read "fight off" like "fend off". His opponents were using the table like a mass shield/ram, right? And stabbing a table isn't going to get him much of anywhere, unfortunately. I felt really bad for Sophos at this part, but I also kind of laughed at the mental image.

The villa servants flipped a table over and used the flat end to push Sophos to the floor. Using their weight, they pinned Sophos to the ground, so he couldn't fight back. I believe Sophos's observance that he didn't know how to fight a table was a sort of sarcastic comment on how ridiculous his situation was. Plus, like everyone else said, he couldn't defeat a table by hitting it or stabbing it with a sword, especially since his arms were pinned. Poor, Sophos... ):

However, one does have to laugh at the image of Sophos pinned under a table by a group of hysterical servants. All the while, repeating the curse words he picked up from Gen. XD

That scene was such a great mix of terror and slapstick. Though, seeing it through Sophos' eyes always brings out the ridiculous aspect, as you say. He is so dryly funny and self-disparaging.

Oh, and we don't mind your posting at all--you've really livened the place up, so YAY.

Not going to add anything new, but just so you know, there's no such thing as terrorising Sounis. Only fangirling and QT worshipping, and those are all fine by our standards. XD
