Summer Reading!
Jun. 6th, 2013 11:23 amHi, all you lovely Sounisians!
I know you haven't heard from me in forever -- and you probably won't again for a while -- I'm WAY busy at this time of year. But I was scanning one of my professional journals this morning, and I came across this article. Check out what Megan Whalen Turner says about her summer reading! (scroll down a little). And her childhood summers -- Walter Farley, hmm? MWT, should you visit the northeast again, I promise to take you riding. Really!! Hopefully on a horse who can see where he's going, unlike the one in my avi.
As for what I'm reading, myself... I just finished Rose Under Fire, by Elizabeth Wein, and it's fantastic! I liked it even better than "Code Name Verity!" Also, I've been racing through Rae Carson's The Crown of Embers, which is a really fun read -- better than the first one, & I'm really enjoying it! I cant wait for the 3rd. I am also plodding rather slowly through The Near Witch. One of my colleagues, whom I really respect, told me it was beautifully written. It is, but not in a way that draws me in, personally. And there are little glitches. For instance, people just don't "turn off" lights in a world where they only have candles. With oil lamps, this might work -- you actually do turn those, to control the wick's height. But Victoria Schwab doesn't mention any other lighting than candles....
Well, I am a very picky reader.
Which is why I love MWT! (Although I still want the publishers/editors to get rid of that extra horse in The Thief!)
MY TBR list is miles long -- so I'll talk about that in a later post ;-D
So, what are you reading this summer? Do MWT's choices appeal to you -- or are you into something else?
Happy Reading!

Date: 6/7/13 01:04 am (UTC)The only book on MWT's list I've read is The Boneshaker and I LOVED it. I think its sequel, The Broken Lands, is even better though.
My summer TBR is OUT OF CONTROL. Seriously. I have 29 books from the library, 17 recently purchased books, and 10 galleys to read. I'm participating this weekend's 48 Hour Book Challenge to try and put a dent in that. And it's fun.

Date: 6/7/13 01:51 am (UTC)I just started The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, and so far I've really been enjoying it. Not a page turner, but I like the voice of the narrator.

Date: 6/7/13 05:08 am (UTC)I'm eagerly awaiting Magic Rises (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1937007588/), and I will read that one when it comes out at the end of July (wish it were coming out a couple of weeks earlier, as I will have time to read actual books over the 4th!). Blood of Tyrants (http://www.amazon.com/Blood-Tyrants-Temeraire-Naomi-Novik/dp/0345522893/) is due out 2 weeks later, and I will probably buy it as an audiobook first (I LOVE Simon Vance (http://www.audible.com/series/ref=sr_1_1_sa?asin=B006K1RFP6)!!!).

Date: 6/7/13 05:40 am (UTC)This makes me feel a lot less self conscious about my reading habits...I thought I was the only one who "dithers by the side of the pool" and finds it hard to start new books.
This summer I've been rereading Sharon Shinn: The Shape of Desire, Still Life with Shape Shifter, and Troubled Waters (so far). Love them all. Still have to make it through her entire bibliography. I WILL DO IT.

Date: 6/8/13 08:05 pm (UTC)I read a bunch of Honor Harrington books a few years back, but they all started to blend together and I hated all the thousands and thousands of people who die in the books. But, boy, would I love to have a 6-pawed treecat.

Date: 6/12/13 03:58 am (UTC)Despite the fact that I have not read Warrior's Apprentice, and I'm missing some backstory. I'm also getting a little befuddled with the geography of the space sector it deals with. Ah well!
I am enjoying it a lot.

Date: 6/18/13 03:59 am (UTC)It's actually really exciting to know I have so much to read. I'm still cautious that I'll like them all, because I don't want to be disappointed and I know there's a high chance I'll like them all a LOT. I just finished Warrior's Apprentice and I really liked it, more than the Vor game. It is a better book I think (more self-contained and with excellent character development. It really hits you in the gut a couple times, which Vor Game never did. It makes Vor Game make more sense in terms of what is happening in the character development sense... actually, reading Vor Game first was a lot like reading KoA before anything else, now I think about it. Its intentions as a book are clearer once you realize who you're dealing with. I hadn't quite realized, while reading that one...).
Miles in Warrior's Apprentice just about broke my heart. </3 <3 Eee! So exciting.

Date: 6/18/13 12:19 pm (UTC)What are you reading next? While you're on a back-tracking trend, the _Cordelia's Honor_ omnibus would be the next thing. There's a time chart in the back, listing titles by Miles' age.
If you read some of Bujold's other series (& I hope you do), remember that each is its own thing. If you're not expecting it to be something else, & are open to them, I suspect you'd enjoy them even more.

Date: 6/21/13 06:25 pm (UTC)I read Mountains of Mourning next. I may go on and read Ceteganda next, or go back and read Cordelia's Honour. Both will happen at some point!
I am really enjoying these books! :) :)
