Hi, all you lovely Sounisians!

I know you haven't heard from me in forever -- and you probably won't again for a while -- I'm WAY busy at this time of year. But I was scanning one of my professional journals this morning, and I came across this article. Check out what Megan Whalen Turner says about her summer reading! (scroll down a little). And her childhood summers -- Walter Farley, hmm? MWT, should you visit the northeast again, I promise to take you riding. Really!! Hopefully on a horse who can see where he's going, unlike the one in my avi.

As for what I'm reading, myself... I just finished Rose Under Fire, by Elizabeth Wein, and it's fantastic! I liked it even better than "Code Name Verity!" Also, I've been racing through Rae Carson's  The Crown of Embers, which is a really fun read -- better than the first one, & I'm really enjoying it! I cant wait for the 3rd. I am also plodding rather slowly through The Near Witch. One of my colleagues, whom I really respect, told me it was beautifully written. It is, but not in a way that draws me in, personally. And there are little glitches. For instance, people just don't "turn off" lights in a world where they only have candles. With oil lamps, this might work -- you actually do turn those, to control the wick's height. But Victoria Schwab doesn't mention any other lighting than candles....

Well, I am a very picky reader.

Which is why I love MWT! (Although I still want the publishers/editors to get rid of that extra horse in The Thief!)

MY TBR list is miles long -- so I'll talk about that in a later post ;-D

So, what are you reading this summer? Do MWT's choices appeal to you -- or are you into something else?

Happy Reading!

Oh man, I have Rose Under Fire but am trying to read galleys in the order I receive them so haven't started it yet. I can't wait. I too enjoyed Crown of Embers better than the first book. (I just read The Bitter Kingdom and it is a great ending.)

The only book on MWT's list I've read is The Boneshaker and I LOVED it. I think its sequel, The Broken Lands, is even better though.

My summer TBR is OUT OF CONTROL. Seriously. I have 29 books from the library, 17 recently purchased books, and 10 galleys to read. I'm participating this weekend's 48 Hour Book Challenge to try and put a dent in that. And it's fun.

I want to read Rose Under Fire! Lucky you :-P

I just started The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, and so far I've really been enjoying it. Not a page turner, but I like the voice of the narrator.

I've been avoiding new books lately because as soon as I start one, all of my responsibilities will be neglected. Instead, I've been listening to podcasts and re-listening to the Vorkosigan audiobooks. I recently bought On Basilisk Station (http://www.audible.com/pd?asin=B002V1BOWY), but I haven't listened to it yet because responsibilities. Oh, and I also have Watership Down (http://www.audible.com/pd?asin=B003NAKQPI), which I intend to listen to this summer (never read that one when I was a kid).

I'm eagerly awaiting Magic Rises (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1937007588/), and I will read that one when it comes out at the end of July (wish it were coming out a couple of weeks earlier, as I will have time to read actual books over the 4th!). Blood of Tyrants (http://www.amazon.com/Blood-Tyrants-Temeraire-Naomi-Novik/dp/0345522893/) is due out 2 weeks later, and I will probably buy it as an audiobook first (I LOVE Simon Vance (http://www.audible.com/series/ref=sr_1_1_sa?asin=B006K1RFP6)!!!).

"I love reading, really, I do, but starting a new book often feels like diving into a swimming pool on a hot day. I know I am going to be fine once I am in the water, but I still spend too much time dithering by the side of the pool. As much as I love reading, it’s hard to start new books, find new authors, and try new things. Clearly I am still the same person who read nothing but Walter Farley books for the entirety of fifth grade. Plus ça change and all that. Anyway, I gravitate toward books by authors I know and trust. I re-read books I like. And sometimes I pick out new things and sternly tell myself to jump in."

This makes me feel a lot less self conscious about my reading habits...I thought I was the only one who "dithers by the side of the pool" and finds it hard to start new books.

This summer I've been rereading Sharon Shinn: The Shape of Desire, Still Life with Shape Shifter, and Troubled Waters (so far). Love them all. Still have to make it through her entire bibliography. I WILL DO IT.

I envy you your long-anticipated new books. I don't think any of my favorite series has anything coming soon. Maybe I just need a new series!

I read a bunch of Honor Harrington books a few years back, but they all started to blend together and I hated all the thousands and thousands of people who die in the books. But, boy, would I love to have a 6-pawed treecat.

Oh yes, me too, but I've learned that there are some Sounisians whose recs I must absolutely try. ^^

YAY ROSE! I was really anxious about how people would like that one, partly because I loved it so much and partly because everyone seemed so real to me. Happily, everyone I've seen who's read it loved it.

I am currently reading The Vor Game, which I am really enjoying!!!

Despite the fact that I have not read Warrior's Apprentice, and I'm missing some backstory. I'm also getting a little befuddled with the geography of the space sector it deals with. Ah well!

I am enjoying it a lot.

Geography doesn't matter; you'll be too busy drooling over Miles, Gregor, & Aral all being awesome to look at space maps anyway. Just think of the fun you'll have when you re-read it after reading the _Cordelia's Honor_ omnibus & _Warrior's Apprentice_. It'll be a whole new read for you. Everyone starts Bujold at different places, & it all works out. I kind of envy you those first reads. Just think of someone reading mwt for the first time[s].

Haha! Yes, but it's easier to appreciate his leaps of logic if I can follow the situation. ARE there space maps anywhere?

It's actually really exciting to know I have so much to read. I'm still cautious that I'll like them all, because I don't want to be disappointed and I know there's a high chance I'll like them all a LOT. I just finished Warrior's Apprentice and I really liked it, more than the Vor game. It is a better book I think (more self-contained and with excellent character development. It really hits you in the gut a couple times, which Vor Game never did. It makes Vor Game make more sense in terms of what is happening in the character development sense... actually, reading Vor Game first was a lot like reading KoA before anything else, now I think about it. Its intentions as a book are clearer once you realize who you're dealing with. I hadn't quite realized, while reading that one...).

Miles in Warrior's Apprentice just about broke my heart. </3 <3 Eee! So exciting.

There should be a Nexus map in front of the book, but it mainly tells who is reached via whose wormholes.

What are you reading next? While you're on a back-tracking trend, the _Cordelia's Honor_ omnibus would be the next thing. There's a time chart in the back, listing titles by Miles' age.

If you read some of Bujold's other series (& I hope you do), remember that each is its own thing. If you're not expecting it to be something else, & are open to them, I suspect you'd enjoy them even more.

I went out and bought some of the omnibus paperbacks (including Cordelia's Honour), and they have that little nexus map in the front! The new library edition I was reading before DIDN'T. IT'S SO MUCH EASIER TO FOLLOW NOW. I DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A MEMORY LIKE MILE'S (which I most certainly don't).

I read Mountains of Mourning next. I may go on and read Ceteganda next, or go back and read Cordelia's Honour. Both will happen at some point!

I am really enjoying these books! :) :)
