Bess Throckmorton was one of the Queen's Maids of Honour.

Shy and retiring, her dream was to capture the heart of the proud and
restless Raleigh, in whose life it seemed she would always come second.

Nice! I admit that Sutcliff is a bit colder than I like in my historical fiction - I prefer Gillian Bradshaw, who tackles a lot of the same types of things - but she is a master. Thanks for the rec!

I recall collecting a very old, battered copy of this from the library as a young teen, making my first explorations into Sutcliff's writings. I absolutely adore her novels. Also recommended: her Roman Britain trilogy (Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, The Lantern Bearers).

Thanks for the heads up, Filk!
