I recently toured the Pompeii exhibit in Kansas City and had a great time. One thing which was fascinating was the information on how a hypocaust works. I also took some pictures which i thought you all may enjoy. The items on display were authentic, not replicas. The exhibit had TONS of artifacts, in excellent condition. There was also a room depicting what the volcano eruption would have looked like, and showed how long it took. The entire time I was in that room I was thinking about Eugenides's vision in QOA. Pretty terrifying stuff. The final room in the exhibit included the famous figures of the people who died in Pompeii. It felt kind of irreverent to take pictures of them, but you can Google them if you are interested.

This lion was part of a fountain originally. The water came out of its mouth.

This woman was quite lovely. Her short curls reminded me of Helen...

These are some masks for traditional plays. Some of these are believed to have only been used for decoration, and not in actual performances.

In this next pic there is an inkwell and some keys. The keys were oddly shaped. The display sign also said that roman locks only opened from one side of the door. Interesting.

The next three images include a jewelry display. The earrings are fetching, no? Also, the rings were seal rings and had the tiny images of gods carved into them. It is really hard to see in the pictures though. I was standing right outside the case, but the pics are still too far away imv.

Fascinating! I'd love to see this exhibit. (Thanks for sharing your pictures!) I think we tend to forget how sophisticated life in these ancient places was, when all we normally get to see is the ruins.

Poor Gen! I hadn't fully considered how upsetting those visions would be. It definitely adds layers of meaning to his homesickness, and his complicated reaction to King!Sophos, and the tricky business of being friends but also needing to politically maneuver said friends into dangerous positions of power and allegiance before, you know, BOOM. I can't really blame him for throwing the occasional inkpot.

Thanks for sharing these pictures. I am quite jealous that I can't see them in person. I had not realized that they were able to get all the ash, lava, etc. off of so many artifacts. And they do give a better idea of what Gen's world would look like.
