A typo in The Thief??

I loaned (one of my copies of) The Thief to a friend who wanted to read it. He sent me a text last night with a picture that he took of page 184, which is when Gen is raving and is visited by Eugenides the god, noting the line "When I dared to lower my arm, he was gone." My friend asks, "When did he raise his arm??"

I read and re-read carefully, and I can't see anything that says Gen ever raised his arm when Eugenides arrived.....Is this a typo, or is there a DEEPER MEANING??

AGREED. All these years and we hadn't noticed!
However, it may not be a typo. It may be an in-text example of Megan's Not Telling ;P

I didn't notice the typo either. I wonder where his hand is; over his eyes or pointing.

In the other thread ninedaysqueen mentioned the price of the orginal hardcovers and I went and looked them up on Ebay. The original their hardcover has a shadow hand over a Gods face. Did we ever discuss the cover and come to a conclusion on the significance of the hand?

This scene is the same in all my editions, so it's probably on purpose. It wouldn't be a typo. It would be considered a continuity issue.

However, it may just be that Gen put his arm over his face, because there is a GOD sitting RIGHT THERE. In putting his arm down, he clearly raised it at some point, so it's not entirely necessary to tell the reader so.

That's the ugly Hephestia cover, as we like to call it. XD It's suppose to be when Gen is reaching for the Gift in the Temple. I'm pretty sure it's his hand casting a shadow across Hephestia's face.

Are the hardcovers still expensive? I remember people talking about them being like a $100 for awhile.

Continuity Issue

I tend to agree with ninedaysaqueen.

However, I did notice what I can only imagine might be a continuity issue after about my 50th reading recently. In chapter 7 when Gen is left with Ambiades and Sophos:

"We could get some fish out of the river," Ambiades pointed out. "Pol has fishing line and hooks in his pack."
....
"Ambiades had collected the fishing gear out of the magus's pack, and he pulled Sophos away."

I mean, they both might have been carrying fishing gear, but... maybe this has already been discussed and a brilliant explanation brought forth?

I never noticed that!

I don't think we've ever discussed this before. Mostly, the traveling bags only come up when we're trying to figure out where Pol was keeping that pry bar the whole time. XD

I would point out that one is dialogue and other is Gen's POV narration. It's possible that he thinks of all the bags as the "magus's bags," even though each person probably has at least one personal bag. Except for Gen, of course...
