I was wondering the same thing. I haven't gone over everything with a fine toothed comb yet, but I'm wondering if this takes place at the same time or shortly after CoK.
A certain soldier is in Attolia during KoA, but I don't recall him being mentioned in CoK, so he could have been away kidnapping Kamet during that time, maybe?
Threw in a spoiler alert at the top, just in case. :-)
It says at the beginning of TaT that they hid out for over a year after leaving Attolia, together with trying to schmooz an appointment, that would be say 18 months to 2 years after leaving Attolia the book begins?
No mention is made of Sounis events from CoK in TaT, right? So concurrent with CoK sounds plausible.
I also wondered this because Kamet and his Attolian companion seemed a little older than I imagined them to be, and I worried at first if we'd jumped way ahead. But the time Kamet and Nahusaresh spent at the estate licking their wounds only seemed around a year, so I'm comfortable with it being within a year of ACOK.
By the way, has anyone noticed that this is a YA book, but the two protagonists are older than 20? I think it's very cool because the book doesn't even need to be YA, it's a good book that can be enjoyed completely as an adult book, though it fits with the YA market.
Good catch, Anon. A small detail, but important. I think you're right. Also, there's no mention in ACoK of a pregnancy and in TaT they say Irene must have been pretty far along in her pregnancy before having her (alleged) miscarriage. So at least several months must have passed, and possibly even longer.
Although, the last mention of Ornon in Attloia in CoK is *before* Sophus leaves for Sounis to be confirmed as king. So theoretically there is nothing in canon to preclude Ornon being sent around then to be ambassador to the Meads.
Yes. Good catch! I just finished re-reading CoK and agree with you totally. TaT must come after that, although not too long after, since Kamet's comments at the beginning of TaT hint that TaT begins roughly 18 months to 2 years after Kamet and Neh. flee Attolia.
OK, continuing in my "reading them in reverse order" plan to understand the timeline, I have just finished KoA, and some great gems there for the timeline: Eug teaching Costis to speak Mead (yes, that pops up in TaT), so he planned this for awhile. (COMPLETELY forgot about that)
KoA takes about 4-5 months total, and starts shortly after their wedding. About 2 months in (ch 5) Sophus disappears, so that last 3 months or so of KoA run concurrent with the first 3 months of CoK. The exact timeline depends a lot on length of time needed to plan a wedding of a queen in Attolia.
CoK runs about 8 months or so, judging from changing of seasons. But MWT uses a lot of "weeks" to define time periods, which could be 2 weeks or over a month, really.
So, all of this is consistent with TaT starting a bit after CoK and about 16+ months after Neh and Kamet leave Attolia.

I've decided to re-read the set backwards....
