While she knits....what have you been reading lately that are good for Thief fans?

I recently discovered the "And I Darken" trilogy by Kiersten White (book 3 was just released). In some ways it reminds me a bit of the QT series: takes place in a historical world similar to our own, but changed in some way, making it "fantasy" even though there's no magic. Small countries jostling for borders, lots of political machinations, moving armies around, sabotaging your own resources in order to befuddle the enemy....and the main character is a ruthless woman who takes extreme measures to obtain and maintain her throne (albeit, even more ruthless than Irene). And unlike a lot of YA fantasy these days, romance is no where near the forefront of the story.

What other recommendations have ye got?

Just discovered a trilogy of novels co-written by my current favorite comic book writer, Christopher Priest (not the one who wrote The Prestige, the other one, who currently writes Deathstroke :) ). It's about the Green Lantern superhero character, and the final book has some really nice writing, as well as some pretty fun superheroics. The trilogy is titled "Green Lantern: Sleepers", with each installment creatively titled "Book One," "Book Two," and "Book Three." They were part of the Humble Audiobook Bundle, with a full cast reading each book, music, and sound effects. Pretty cool!

The lies of locke lamora. It’s about a group of con artists/thieves who thoroughly enjoy playing their “games”

I'm reading Betsy Ross and the Making of America, which is good.

I just read Rachel Aaron's Eli Monpress series and I really loved it! A 5 book series about a charming thief with secrets whom I really liked. Lots of fantasy action, but nothing graphically violent, sexual, or language-wise that usually put me off.

And even better by Rachel Aaron, the Heartstriker series! Staring with "Nice Dragons Finish Last", about a dragon boy, Julius, in human form who's in danger of being eaten by his mother by being a Nice Dragon, who's thrown out of his home and meets up with a human girl who is also on the run for her life. These books have seriously dangerous yet good-looking people (dragons) threatening and coercing our loveable hero, yet Julius, the Nice Dragon, turns out to be a very clever fellow. The only downside in the entire series was a moral failing on the part of our heros toward the end, but overall the series is entertaining, vividly colorful, satisfying, and wholely unique from anything else I've read.

I love the Eli Monpress series!! One of my favourite series ever! It's a shame it isn't more well-known.

I've also read the 1st two books of her Heartstriker series, but found myself too distracted to pick up the rest. May I know what happened around the moral failing you mentioned (feel free to send me a PM!)? I don't mind spoilers at all. It always seemed to me that Julius was a strickler for doing the Right Thing, the whole point of him being "nice," so I'm surprised there was an oversight on that regard.

I'll just say that there was a sex scene that I was disappointed by, but other readers might not be bothered by at all. Nothing explicit. The end of the series is still very satisfying.

It's one of those things where if I'm recommending the series to friends I'd mention that aspect to some friends who would care, and not mention it to other friends.

Hi, I mostly lurk here, but if you like series with lots of machinations between countries, I LOVED Mary E. Pearson's Remnant Chronicles (Kiss of Deception, Heart of Betrayal, Beauty of Darkness.) Yes, there's romance, but it's smart and absorbing. Mary's Jenna Fox books, set in a near future and concerning questions of identity and what makes us human, are also highly recommended.

I have recently been devouring Lois McMaster Bujold's series of novellas--Penric and Desdemona, and recommend them to you all! They are perhaps best, though, read after reading Curse of Challion and Paladin of Souls, because those set up the religion part of the world building, which is important, but that's not a problem because I recommend those to you all too!
