I have been working my way through the Queen's Thief books via audio book and am currently listening to KoA. I had gotten to the point where Irene asked Eugenides if he was telling the truth about the sand in his food and the snake in his bed and asks why he hadn't said anything, he said "I don't want the kitchens purged, or the guards." And then the light bulb came on. Of course he doesn't want the kitchens purged, he had made friends with many of the people there when he pretended to be a servant there but we don't find that out until Thick as Thieves!

Oh my, I'd forgotten that line but yes, that all makes sense. And he didn't want to say anything about the sand because, deep down, he figured he deserved it, having fooled all those people.

I do love that he bit the cook.

I love the way we gradually, retrospectively learn about Gen’s infiltration of the Attolian palace—biting the cook, witnessing Dite’s unsuccessful wooing, befriending Kamet—I wonder if we find out anything more in Return of the Thief. I would love to read the whole conversation he had with the cooks when he finally confronted them and was recognized as the sandal-polisher. Or do you think the sand-sprinkler already recognized him?

I’m confused about that too. Were they doing the sand thing because they knew who he was or because they didn’t?
