They're NOT making a Thief movie, are they?  Something was mentioned in the Fuse #8 blog about the prospect of the books-turned-film, but it was never really confirmed.  There's just something about making books (especially good books) into movies that annoys me, and I would think that transferring Gen onto the screen would ruin him.  I mean, yes, it would be wonderful if MWT's books were that successful, but. . . . *shrugs*  It would make the books so public, you know?

No they're not making a movie. I was just joking around about the Orlando icon (I forget whose it is sorry). I don't know if I would acutally want a movie of the books just because other than The Thief, the intrigue and behind-the-season-in-the-mind moments wouldn' be done well on the big screen.

It would make the books so public, you know?
Lol - glad I'm not the only one whose a tab bit selfish. I think the reason I don't like Shakespeare (ducks from all the rotten fruit being thrown at her for saying that out loud) is because he's too public - anyone who wants to be smart (movies) quotes him but because everyone quotes him it means nothing anymore.

I wouldn't mind there being a movie, if only for the fact that I'm a dork who enjoys seeing midnight showings of movies while dressed up in costume.

That being said, if they ever did make Thief into a movie, it BETTER be a GOOD movie. I'm not talking 'A Little Princess' good (which is a great movie, but very unfaithful to the book), or even 'Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe' good, no, I'm talking Peter Jackson, LOTR, "I-will-put-my-career-on-the-line-to-make-this-movie-perfect" good.

Which probably would never happen, so I guess I'm more on the side for "NO MOVIE!"

Interestingly, I've always thought that in the right hands these books would make fabulous movies. There's something very cinematic about the writing -- you always know where everybody is and what their body language says. Some of the behind-the-scene-in-the-mind bits might become subtle, don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-this bits.
"In the right hands" is crucial, though -- and unlikely. So maybe no movie is better.

I would hate to see these books made into movies too. I don't think it is possible to find an actor who could truly portray Gen the way I see him. Especially a short actor. No, it would be horrible.
It only liked the 1st LOTR movies, the other two I thought messed up the characters in the books too much. Aragorn was not a cheater- or even a think I might cheat person.
I think I could handle one of MWT's short stories made into a movie. I'm not completely in love with them. So I can let go a little there.

I assume we're talking about the Alfonso Cuaron "A Little Princess." I love that movie. It changes almost everything in the book but ends up being amazingly true to the spirit of the book nonetheless.

Has anybody seen Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland? He always reminds me of Gen in that, especially with the Scottish accent.

If a film was made I'd go to see it. You know, just to make sure it's the right plot and stuff.

That's the one. I love that movie, too--adore it, even. It's one of my favorites, and the only movie that makes me cry everytime I see it. I love how they added in Indian culture, too (I lived in India for a short time, so it's really cool to see).

That being said, it's closer to a remake of the Shirley Temple movie (which I think isn't nearly as good as Cuaron's version) than the book, really. I agree with you that it is very true to the spirt of the book, and I actually like the movie a little better than a book. (Is that wrong, particularly since I want to be a writer? XD) It's not that I think it's a bad movie--it's just that I think The Thief works just as well as a movie on its own, without having to change so much. (Little changes wouldn't bother me--movies are different from books. That's why I still like the LOTR movies, as well as the new Narnia movie, even if it has flaws.)

That's exactly what I meant. ^^ It's hard (for me, at least) to believe that the LOTR movies could've been done as well as they were--they kept large chunks of the text intact, and the things they did change were very similar in feel and theme to the original book (except for a few quibbles of mine, like Frodo running from the Ringwraiths instead of attacking them at the Barrow-Downs, and Faramir coming off as a weaker character in TTT than he was in the books). If Megan's books were turned into a movie, I'd want a "Peter Jackson" to do the book. Someone who loved the books and understood them well, and was willing to stake his career on getting the books right. That's what I want to see. XD Too much to ask? Probably.

Sometimes I think The Thief would make a great anime, too, but then I think about Howl's Moving Castle and Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo and wonder if that would really be the case. (I'm a fan of both Miyazaki's movie and Gankutsuou, but both are untrue to the books. Good, but not really great adaptions of the book.)

Johnny Depp is awesome. It's a shame he's over 40 at this point, because he would make an AWESOME Gen if he were a bit younger. He could handle both Snarky!Gen and Moody!Gen, I think.

The Shirley Temple one is icky. I too think Cuaron's movie actually outdoes the book in places -- like the moment at the end between Sara and Lavinia, when they look at each other and laugh. What a moment of grace! If Burnett had thought of it, this would have gone beautifully in the book.

I have to second this. I think Johnny Depp could portray Gen pretty well (if he weren't twenty years older than Gen is meant to be).

On the whole, I have to agree with everyone. No movie is better than a movie which falls short of perfection.

What do you mean too old? They can do all sorts of things with films these days. Bit of airbrushing etc. and you'd never know his age!

But WE would know!!

Then again, if it was animated, it wouldn't matter...

But if it was animated, I'd want Vic Mignogna to play Gen. He's got the perfect voice for Gen and he's a great actor (although also too old to play Gen in a live-action film).

And if it was animated and using voice actors, I'd want Chris Patton as Costis. XD
*voice actor fangirl--also thinks Cam Clarke would make a great Magnus*

I also really like when it's hinted that Miss Minchin's bitterness towards Sarah might be because her own father wasn't as attentive (the scene where Sarah shouts at her "All girls are princesses! Didn't your father ever tell you that? Didn't he??" and Minchin yells at her, storms out of the room, then stifles a sob)

Gosh, there's really quite a few original moments in that movie that are absolutely wonderful.

What? Yes, Vic. Why, do you think he'd be too...grumpy sounding for Gen? (Or not young enough?)

Admittedly I'm a Vic Mignogna fangirl, so I could be blinded by my fangirliness.

Ditto. Like how LotR became a huge cultural phenomenon instead of the books I grew up on and loved to death. =(((

I don't ever want the Thief to become a movie... But I wouldn't mind an in-character photo shoot with models. =p I want to see a real life Gen face to face!

Or when people start thinking that the books are a spin-off of the movie.

Even worse when they think the book is a spin-off of a video game (my sis and James Bond)

Ermmmmm - I would think everybody quotes Shakespeare because there are so many marvelous quotes! I've used some myself in discussions - okay, arguments - with my principal. There's something there for practically any occasion.

And somehow I think your average (or above-average) author would rather that his books become public - very, very public - because that's kind of how lots of them get sold!

One quote from the book that I *wish* had been in the LotR movies was when Legolas, in the Entforest, says something about how it's so old it makes him feel young - younger than he has felt since he began traveling with "you children." There isn't any mention in the movies of how old he really is, to the point that you're left thinking he's the same age he looks.

Ooh, you're right--I always sort of took it for granted that people knew that by watching the movie. Maybe they assumed that since the movies says Arwen's older, that people would understand the same for Legolas? (Or do the movies say anything about Arwen's age? Sometimes I forget what was in the book and what was in the movie. I need to rewatch the movies and reread the book soon.)

Its not always bad

I just get the idea you have been disappointed by past book-to-movie translations. I'm an aspiring director and personally I was hoping I'd be able to make one someday. Just about all novels can be good as a movie, it just depends on the makers.

My opinion

I think it woud make a good movie but it would not surpass the books.
It wouldn't be a difficult movie to make (talking computer animation wize) because there are not any crazy monster stuff.
But to get the full complexity of the plot? that would be difficult.
And anyone who is over obsessed with these books (like me) should remember that the movie is not a book it is a movie and we should not look at it like the book.
