They're NOT making a Thief movie, are they?  Something was mentioned in the Fuse #8 blog about the prospect of the books-turned-film, but it was never really confirmed.  There's just something about making books (especially good books) into movies that annoys me, and I would think that transferring Gen onto the screen would ruin him.  I mean, yes, it would be wonderful if MWT's books were that successful, but. . . . *shrugs*  It would make the books so public, you know?

I wouldn't mind there being a movie, if only for the fact that I'm a dork who enjoys seeing midnight showings of movies while dressed up in costume.

That being said, if they ever did make Thief into a movie, it BETTER be a GOOD movie. I'm not talking 'A Little Princess' good (which is a great movie, but very unfaithful to the book), or even 'Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe' good, no, I'm talking Peter Jackson, LOTR, "I-will-put-my-career-on-the-line-to-make-this-movie-perfect" good.

Which probably would never happen, so I guess I'm more on the side for "NO MOVIE!"

I assume we're talking about the Alfonso Cuaron "A Little Princess." I love that movie. It changes almost everything in the book but ends up being amazingly true to the spirit of the book nonetheless.

That's the one. I love that movie, too--adore it, even. It's one of my favorites, and the only movie that makes me cry everytime I see it. I love how they added in Indian culture, too (I lived in India for a short time, so it's really cool to see).

That being said, it's closer to a remake of the Shirley Temple movie (which I think isn't nearly as good as Cuaron's version) than the book, really. I agree with you that it is very true to the spirt of the book, and I actually like the movie a little better than a book. (Is that wrong, particularly since I want to be a writer? XD) It's not that I think it's a bad movie--it's just that I think The Thief works just as well as a movie on its own, without having to change so much. (Little changes wouldn't bother me--movies are different from books. That's why I still like the LOTR movies, as well as the new Narnia movie, even if it has flaws.)

The Shirley Temple one is icky. I too think Cuaron's movie actually outdoes the book in places -- like the moment at the end between Sara and Lavinia, when they look at each other and laugh. What a moment of grace! If Burnett had thought of it, this would have gone beautifully in the book.

I also really like when it's hinted that Miss Minchin's bitterness towards Sarah might be because her own father wasn't as attentive (the scene where Sarah shouts at her "All girls are princesses! Didn't your father ever tell you that? Didn't he??" and Minchin yells at her, storms out of the room, then stifles a sob)

Gosh, there's really quite a few original moments in that movie that are absolutely wonderful.
