For all my fellow Queen’s Thief fans my friend Juny and I have started a new podcast where we discuss The Queen’s Thief. During this first episode we did a short Q&A on our first impressions of the first book. We really want to hear your thoughts, and use this as a discussion starter. It's hard since we're all so dispersed, but this might be a cool way to share. Please comment with your answers to our questions below! (Also let us know if you know of any other Queen's Thief podcasts out there!)

Good questions & excellent discussion! You ladies have obviously put a lot of thought into this. And what a treat for us all, to get fresh, first-reader impressions, on a book that's been out 20+ years.

Funny you mention The False Prince a couple of times. When I read that book I thought it was such a ripoff of The Thief. I'd be curious to know whether that author had read TT or just happened to dream up a story with so many similarities.

Interesting what you think about Pol, and his being a favorite character and the comment about not feeling like his character was underdeveloped. As you say, he hardly speaks but you get to know a lot about him just through his actions and the few things he says.

I really liked the part about imagining the characters the way *you* want them to be. That's what is so wonderful about all books--every reader brings their own background and experiences to a story and sees it in different ways. In fact, sometimes when I reread a book it seems like a completely different book to me, because I'm a different person than I was when I first read it.

Yes! I think we looked up The False Prince author to find out if she had read The Thief. Juny researched it and found out she hadn't read it before. It seems rather fishy though. I read The False Prince first, then found out about The Thief afterward, because of this same discussion and people bringing up the similarities. I see a lot of parallels in the characters (besides the main ones) so I find it hard to believe she didn't draw inspiration from it. Interestingly though, for The False Prince, the author was inspired by one of her students she taught as a teacher. So I don't know.... It's hard to draw the line it art sometimes. I love The Prydain Chronicles for instance, but the first book felt like a rip-off of Lord of the Rings in parts to me. However, the series as a whole is quite different. So the context an entire series provides is essential.
