This Mock Newbery Club chose The King of Attolia as its winner. The committee was made up of teen readers. This is a large public library system in North Carolina, so it's got to be cool, right?
"You know, Checkers, the more stuff you post about children's lit and stuff, the more I want to become a librarian so I can rediscover all this stuff?"
You know, I'm the exactly same way! I keep thinking it'd be a cool career...but I'm, well, lazy, so the idea of getting a masters isn't very thrilling....XD
1. It is the best job in the whole world. 2. Librarians are retiring like crazy so there are many job openings. 3. It's not just books anymore--lots of technology to play with, too. 4. You get to boss people around like crazy--you are the Queen of the Circulation Desk. 5. You don't ever have to worry about those pesky high tax brackets. 6. You can get your undergrad degree in anything you want.
The master's degree was fun, actually. Building Dewey numbers! Subject headings! Guttenburg! OCLC! Yay!
1. Can't argue there. 2. Oh, really? (Do you think it would count in a Teach for America type thing? Do you need an education degree to be a school librarian? But the problem with ACE is it gives you your master's in education so I'd still have to do library science...eh, what's another master's, anyway?) 3. ♥s computers 4. also ♥s being in control 5. LOL! hahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa...*looks back at her original point* 6. Well, that's reassuring.
hm...you tempt me...so much...(actually, my mom has thought several times about going back and getting her master's in library science. I really think she ought to, except she'd have to drive forty-five minutes every day to go to classes, and nevermind me being in school...)
You don't need a degree in education to be a school librarian. My undergrad degree is in psychology, my Master's in Library Science.
Jade, I'm serious here. Have your mom email me if she wants more info. If I could do it, she can. I worked full time and went to school on the weekends. It took me four years, but lots of schools now offer online degrees in library science. It was one of the best decisions I've made.
Ok, I just looked. UA has an online degree program.
you're a psychologist, eh? *flops down on couch and proceeds to tell story of life-long phobia of cheese, ending with "is there anyway to help me? I just...can't take it...the dining hall...it's everywhere...help me please...*sob*"*
If she mentions it again (which she might be), I will definitely keep in mind everything you have said. Thanks for the offer! ^_^
Actually, the school librarian thing varies from state to state. In Oregon, to work in a public school (if you're lucky enough to find one that still HAS a school librarian) you pretty much need an eduation degree with media specialist credentials. Public libraries across the board seem to want that masters.
In my opinion, the online degree rocks. At least the one I'm doing. Listening to lectures from the comfort of my couch is priceless. I'm doing the University of Washington's distance program.
But the bossing people around thing - that just depends on the library. Sorry!
Erk--you're right, each state is different. We have it pretty good here - each school is supposed to have a certified library media coordinator with a Master's degree. Because I don't have an education degree or teaching experience, I had to take two graduate ed. courses.
I came out of my program with a master's, a teaching license in school media k-12, and certification as a public librarian, too. So I have that going for me when I become too bossy for everyone to bear. :)
I have to admit I've been thinking about becoming a librarian also. It just seems like it would be so much fun. I mean part of my job would be to keep current on literature so I could recommend books, wouldn't it? Also in my undergraduate degree I loved doing research (hated writing the papers though).
I work on Saturdays in a public library, and i agree with you Checkers!
1. Can't argue! When I'm answering the renewals phone, i can read the boks. 2. I'm not sure about this one here. 3. You bet. Checkers, do you have those rolling stack bookshelves that are supposed to stop rolling when they hit you? mwhahaha! 4. This is what I LOVE the most! Especially bossing guys around. Soooo fun! 5. Yes. Though in the UK you get way higher than the national minimum wage if you work in the public sector. OK, as a full time job, the pay isn't that great, but as a student, it's brilliant! 6. Absolutely.
Haha, well, my parents said if I wanted a masters I'll have to work and pay for it myself (Dad: I want to retire sometime!), but it'd be doable.
I guess since I'm a college freshman I should just worry about getting my degree in English first. XD But, well, if I want to be a writer...and if reading helps you be a better writer...it only makes sense to work in a job where I'm *supposed* to read....
While we were in Old Town Alexandria, we wandered into a children's bookstore. They had a Mock Newbery "contest" going on so naturally we went in and voted for KoA (vote early and often). One of the workers had not read it (we were unanimous in saying she needed to read the three in order), the other said she loved all three books.
