I’m equal parts excited and terrified. Congrats to MWT though.

me too! It's been a while since I've seen an adaptation of a beloved book that I actually liked...but yay for MWT!

My brain immediately went to all the ways it could be bad, but I'm working my way around to "yeah, MWT, get that Disney money!" and if it's bad I just...won't watch it. I'm sure I'll have gotten all the way to "fingers crossed it's actually good" by the end of the night.

Yeah I'm really terrified. Imagine if that cast Eugenides wrong...there's just no recovering from that in my opinion.

Anything that raises awareness of these books is a plus!

Please just don't Artemis Fowl this one....

Oh my gosh yeah. That movie face-planted. Flopped. Failed. Dismally...

My initial reaction was “Nooooooo”. These books are just so precious and I don’t want them to mess up the adaptation. I don’t want another Percy Jackson or Artemis fowl. But, I’m also pleased for Megan and excited that more people will be exposed to the book.
Ugh, I have such mixed feelings.

The news just popped up on my Google page (7am this morning) and I let out a gasp at seeing MWTs picture, and then I read the headline and let out an even more horrified gasp that woke up my husband who thought something terrible was happening.

Good for Megan, this will give her books the attention they need (maybe they'll finally release a full hardcover set).....And at least this is live-action? I think I'd really loathe a Pixar version. Oh, and now we'll finally get some Thief merchandise, rather than scouring Etsy for a fourth pair of gold bee earrings.....

.....but gods, I hate when my favorite books get adapted. Harry Potter, Ella Enchanted, The Golden Compass......I only liked The Lord of the Rings because I saw the movies before reading the books.

Yes, very mixed feelings. Mostly dread. I think I JUST commented on a Bookriot article about this, saying I dreaded the day that Hollywood discovers MWT.

Please don't mess this up.

Omg, Ella Enchanted! That's exactly the kind of doomsday scenario I worry about when my favorite books get adapted into movies.

Honestly, one of the worst parts of having a book series adapted is that the actors faces become synonymous with the characters. It's now harder to find HP fanart that doesn't look like Daniel Radcliffe. And no shade on Daniel, but he doesn't really look much like book Harry.

Right? Or what if they totally mess up some other iconic imagery, like making Hamiathe's Gift look like a massive yo-yo? Now you have to have that inaccurate portrayal on your bookshelf forever...

Couldn’t agree more. MWT deserves it. But I dread it.

Also, can we talk about this line: "The tome earned a Newbery Honor award and had critics comparing Turner to fantasy authors such as Marie Lu and Patrick Rothfuss."

*huffs in early fandom indignation*

I'm sure 12 year old Marie Lu would have been excited to hear it!

OMG seriously. And sorry to be pedantic but a "tome" is a big heavy book--not really the right word for The Thief!

Based on the way Disney has been making movies (recently) makes me really really nervous about this. They just seem to have lost a little bit of the soul behind their storytelling and relying on remakes/gimmicks to get by. I don't know if there's any Star Wars fans out there, but man they really butchered George Lucas's vision for that.

At least it's live action.....

Ok, wow! Such exciting news! Like some of you, I thought of some of the not-so-great adaptations out there but we’ll hope for the best. whether it happens or not it’s a lovely achievement for MWT.

I have nothing new to add except: thank you all for being "my people" with exceedingly mixed feelings on this!

I am both excited and terrified that they will butcher the story and make it cutesy, which Disney is famous for doing. Fingers crossed they cast the characters right and don’t change the story. It’s perfect as it is. But yay for someone finally recognizing MWT (besides us)!

I've been saying for years she's been under appreciated. I reread them every year for the past 15 years, and I'm glad she's getting some $. I hope they don't butcher it.

I feel like we, as tremendous fans, would never be completely satisfied tho. How can a movie/series live up to such amazing writing? Never.
