Hello  Sounisians! After probably two years of lurking I have finally decided  to step out into the moonlight and show myself to you. I discovered the  Thief in 2018, after scavenging the internet for fanart of the  Ascendance Trilogy. I loved Nielsen's series, but then one day I  encountered a review of someone complaining how the False Prince was a  simple rip off of Turner's the Thief. There was a comparison between two  somewhat similar scenes from both books, and I immediately saw I liked  Turner's writing style more. So I borrowed the Thief from the library  and fell in love with the book. Now all Turner's books stand proudly on  my book shelf and I keep opening one of them every week to reread a  passage. Sometimes I can say a whole part of dialogue out of my head.

So anyway, glad I've finally decided to join this community. Here's  some more info about me: dutch/polish student living in the Netherlands,  language-lover, tree climber, skateboarder since the pandemic :)

I will definitely take part one day in a chat, but not tomorrow. I  gotta study you know, and starting a chat 1 a.m. is a bit too late for  me.

Other people here who read the Ascendance Trilogy of Jennifer A.  Nielsen? Still have fond memories of it, but MWT has defninetely taken  over my thoughts. Here's the link btw to the review that introduced me  to MWT's brilliance:

Welcome! I agree with you soooo much about the False Prince. I actually read a book recently that was even more derivative but am not going to name it here. I'll just mention--unreliable narrator hiding that they are related to the monarch of a neighboring country. Jumping into a river to escape. Being released from jail. Traveling with less savvy companions who don't like being bossed around by the main character. I could go on and on. And on. No, I'm not bitter. :-)

Anyway, so glad you've joined our band of merry readers.

Welcome, kozanoga! We're always happy to add a lurker to our active members. (At least I hope so — that's how I joined a few years ago!)

The False Prince was on the Lone Star List (an annual recommended-reading list for teens created by a group of librarians) many a year ago. I was willing to let that pass, but I got so upset that the blurb of "if you like this book, here are some others you'll like" DIDN'T include The Thief that I learned it's best for me just not to talk about The False Prince at all.

We look forward to hearing more from you — and hopefully "seeing" you in a chat one day/night.

I am equally annoyed that The False Prince often gets more attention than the much better book that it copied its entire plot and characters from. *grumbles in archaic* XD

Welcome and thanks for delurking! I'll have to set some chats up for the afternoon in the future. We seem to be getting more and more members who don't live in US time zones, which makes scheduling chats interesting... :)

I read The False Prince several years ago, and though I enjoyed it, I didn't continue the series. I was extremely uncomfortable with how much the author ripped off The Thief. I honestly felt like I was reading fan-fiction. I have no problem with writers getting inspired by other authors. For example, Gen is based on Howl Jenkins, and Thick as Thieves is clearly based on Eagle of the Ninth. However, Nielsen just straight up copied the entire plot and almost all the characters from The Thief. She listed MWT has an "inspiration" in an interview once, and I was just like... I don't think that word mean what you think it means.
