(Of course, that probably is the unofficial motto of MWT readers, but...)

I'm reading Thick as Thieves to my son and tonight we got to the part where Costis and Kamet have just escaped from the Namreen in Koadester. Costis is telling Kamet what "his king" thinks about the Emperor and empire building:

C: "We have the Greater Powers on our side"
K: He was naive. "That only means that one of the Greater Powers of the Continent will control the Peninsula instead."

Me: *face palm* as I realize that one of the major plot twists of RotT is laid out in black and white IN THE PREVIOUS BOOK.

And while I'm here, weren't we going to read some DWJ together this year? When are we going to start that? And which ones? I want to say it was the Chrestomanci series, but I could be misremembering.

Exactly! This is why I've always been on the band wagon of "If you think something came out of nowhere in a MWT book, you simply weren't paying enough attention." Though, I feel like that problem of criticizing stories for not painstakingly explaining everything to you has gotten worse, and people wonder why there are so many exposition characters these days.

I recently completed Final Fantasy 16, which had excellent hard world-building, but was more soft-world like in its manner of explaining. The player was allowed to infer a lot of the details. However, there was a lorseman you could talk to if you were really interested in the nitty-gritty. So, the writers planned everything out but avoided forcing fake history lessons on you, which is always so boring! XD

So yeah... I was going to post about that over the New Year, but I sprained my ankle and couldn't walk for a few days. Now, I have a cold. Starting the New Year off with a bang! -_- I will do it right now, before I can procrastinate anymore! :)
