I'm going to Greece!
Jun. 25th, 2024 11:18 amI'm going to be going to Greece at the end of August for about a week! The birthplace of Eddis/Attolia/Sounis!
I know MWT has visited Greece many times, but I can't seem to find all of her Tumblr posts easily. Anyone have suggestion for sights (or sites) that I MUST see while there that are either in Athens (where I'll be arriving), Thessaloniki (where I'll be staying), or anywhere in between? We'll only be on foot or public transportation, so unfortunately places well off the beaten path aren't an option.

Date: 6/26/24 01:33 am (UTC)I was only in Thessaloniki for about two days but I absolutely fell in love with it! It has such a cool vibe. The archaeological museum there is also good. The Rotunda and Arch of Galerius have a lot of history. The White Tower of Thessaloniki is also a good landmark. It's a lovely walk along the water between the old port and the tower, and there are lots of bars/cafes/smoothie places along the way where you can stop for a refreshing drink.
Meteora is near Thessaloniki--monasteries built on the edges of cliffs, very cool to see. We did a day tour thing to get there, so I'm not sure how accessible it is if you don't do that.
Have so much fun!! I've been to Greece twice and I would still go back in a heartbeat. It's the best. If you have any questions, let me know!

Date: 6/27/24 04:00 am (UTC)That’s wonderful! Greece is on my bucket list, but I don’t know if I’ll ever make it there. I went back through the archives on Megan’s tumblr because I thought I remembered her posting from a trip she took some time ago. If you go into the archives, check out the posts from July 2014. And have a wonderful trip!

Date: 6/28/24 12:30 am (UTC)Thank you for the tips! I'm visiting a friend, and we're not sure how long we'll be in Athens...maybe two nights, and then five nights in Thessaloniki. We have free accommodations there, so our schedule is flexible! I'm definitely excited by how many bakeries and cafes there are...I'll be 5 months pregnant by then, and I'm pretty sure this will be a food-themed trip for me. I'm even thinking of doing a walking food tour in Thessaloniki!

Date: 7/9/24 11:17 pm (UTC)@readsintrees' trip has (for some of us) brought back up the idea of a Sounis group trip to Greece. Start saving and we can all start planning.

Date: 2/18/25 09:41 pm (UTC)Whoops, somehow I forgot to update. By "somehow" I mean that I was in my third trimester, and a bit distracted. And now I'm taking care of a 2 month old Sounisian, so things are hectic.
Greece was great! I was 5 months pregnant when I went, first time flying internationally, flying solo, AND transporting a friend's cat to be reunited with her in Greece (where she'd moved). So, it was an intense trip, but very cool. We didn't do too much touristy stuff, and kind of had a low key trip, first spending a few days in Athens exploring the older streets, hiking up Mount Lykavittos in order to watch the sun set over the Parthenon, and sampling some food in terraced cafes. We were going to spend the day on an island, but when we got there I was feeling so poorly that we ended up in a small clinic to get some IV fluids, and then a hospital on the mainland to get a reassuring ultrasound. Yay for travel stomach bugs and pregnancy paranoia! After recovering, we took the train to Thessaloniki, which was lovely! I saw plains of olive trees with tall mountains in the background and was like, "This is it! This is Attolia! Eeeeeeeeeee!!" We then spent a couple more days in Thessaloniki, and I really enjoyed wandering around the small cobbled streets. You can view my photo album here (https://photos.app.goo.gl/pBg1zZ3bBYPR5ZcPA), which is really a lot of random photos because I was delighted by everything. I'm also quite pregnant, tired, and sweaty in all of the pictures of me (I'm the one looking very pregnant, tired, and sweaty).
