I don't know if this has ever been mentioned before, but I remember a post on the meaning of some names a while back. I was searching for names for a story on Behind The Name and I came across this for Irene.

IRENE
Gender: Feminine

Usage: English, Italian, Scandinavian, Finnish, German, Greek Mythology (Latinized)

Pronounced: IE-reen (English), ee-RE-nu (German) [key]

From the Greek Ειρηνη (Eirene) which meant "peace". Irene was the Greek goddess of peace, one of the ‘Ωραι (Horai). Another famous bearer was an 8th-century Byzantine empress, the first woman to lead the Empire. She originally served as regent for her son, but later had him killed and ruled alone.

So I went and searched for the empress on Wikipedia but I'm not too sure how to put a link in a post so I'll just put the address.

Just thought I'd share it with you all in case it's never been brought up before.
