Many of Turner's names are Greek, or evocative of Greek ones.  So I  thought I would see if the name Pheris was real, or had a cognate.

So, yes.  Pharis, or Phares, is a name from Greek mythology. The original married a woman famous for conjugal disharmony and violence (one of the Danaids) and was the progenitor of a couple of Achaean heroes of the Trojan War. There's a city in the Pelopennese named after him.

The interesting part, though, is his own progenitor.

The real Pharis is the son of Hermes.  The god of thieves.

Kind of sheds light on the Pigeon's relationship with our Gen, huh?  And with their gods.

Didn't MWT say there was supposed to be an elephant in her next book (e.g. TaT)?

I found the elephant!

P-
I have received your letter of last month. Your handwriting has greatly improved. I am sorry that the archivist would not let you look at the map of the Empire. I am sure that when your tutor returns he will allow it. I have made this map in haste to give to the messenger who leaves today. I will hope you have already seen a better one by the time it reaches you.
Yours in Friendship, -K

The "P" stands for...

                                    ...wait for it....

                                              Pachyderm!

(Although Pigeon works too...)

Sorry, I couldn't help it.  I JUST thought of this - and it made me laugh!

PS
Is there any form of the name Brinna that could possible mean "sand" or "sandy"?  That seemed like something MWT would do to us...but I can't find it if there is...

Do we have a thread already where the names of the countries are discussed?

Because today I noticed this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sounion

and this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aetolia

and this:

Ok, ok, I know we're all excited to discuss TaT, but I want to go back to some Thief 101. During my latest re∞read of the series, I started to wonder whether or not Gen was given the name Eugenides at birth, or if he adopted it later when he decided he wanted to be a thief and not a soldier...

I mean, how did his parents know to name him Eugenides without knowing first that he was going to grow up to be a Thief? His dad sure seemed to want him to be a soldier. Do they just randomly name a few people in a generation Eugenides in the hopes that ONE of them turns out to be a worthy Thief? In "The Thief" the Magus snidely tells Gen that the current Queen's Thief is named Eugenides, and Gen snaps back that they (thieves) are ALL named Eugenides after the god of thieves. I suspect he said this just to throw the Magus further off any suspicion that Gen was the same person as the Queen's Thief. Because, if there are so many people also named after the god of thieves, how come we haven't bumped into any other Eugenideses?

Attolia/Irene tells Nahuseresh at one point that the Queen's Thief of Eddis takes the name Eugenides as a sort of title as well as a name, so although this is non-Eddisian hearsay, I wonder if it's true....Did Gen take the name Eugenides as a new name as well as a new title when he declared he was going to be the Queen's Thief? WAIT, for that matter, what if the newest Queen's Thief is female? Does she go by Eugenidia?

What do you think? Am I overlooking some passage where Gen says specifically that he was given the name Eugenides at birth?

So I'm re-reading The Queen of Attolia, and I just now picked up on a bit of wordplay that I never noticed before, even though it's literally on the cover.

I have this edition, with the quote on it, "Steal peace, Eugenides. Steal me some time."

And the name "Irene" means "peace." Ha. I (finally) see what they did there. Clever.

Btw, I also didn't realize there was a Eugenides Wiki until now. Cool!

Today is my two year wedding anniversary, so of course I was flipping through some pictures from our wedding album....when I got to the series of pictures showing our getaway car (which my family has always taken the decorating of very seriously for all weddings).

I just figured I'd share since I'm currently reading KOA and all things thiefy are in my mind.

Gosh, can anyone spot the MWT fan? ;)

Family

Alright, this is a little thing, but it just blew my mind.

We know that Eugenides has several siblings. We know that at least some of them are married. Thus it stands to reason that those siblings may have children.

You guys. Somewhere in Eddis there may be a bunch of kids running around talking about their Uncle Gen and Auntie Irene.

I'm flailing here. Anyone want to draw some adorable family fanart?

As we prepare for Hurricane Sandy's impact, we hope that allowing her to blow out her frustrations on the Eastern seaboard will allow her to calm down, and perhaps begin to see Eugenides in a new, better light. (Or at least give him a few sand free days as she is busy elsewhere!!:)

More Hurricane names ... )

philologos

we were discussing rhetoric in ap lang and i guess i should have been paying attention to that instead of daydreaming, but my teacher mentioned that logos (and of course i perked up there) meant knowledge.
now, since philo is/is derived from/relating to love, can we make the conjecture that philologos' name (unless i'm having a critical memory failure and that isn't his name but i'm supposed to be doing apush homework right now so i can't be bothered to check koa) = love of knowledge?

idk that just got me really excited for some reason.

I'm reading ACoK again, and came across something that hadn't registered before. One of Sophos' fellow slaves asks his name.

"I thought before I answered. Wisdom is not a name for a slave. Stone, Mark, Faithful, Strong are slave names."

This time, it made me giggle. Because I had just noticed that there's an article about MWT on Wikipedia, and read it. Before, I had forgotten: MWT's husband's name is Mark.

:)
[identity profile] thief-alchemist.livejournal.com
I know this has been touched on previously, but I am doing an Assessment Task for Ancient History and came across these.

"...since on learning that the granddaughter of Aristogeiton was living humbly in Lemnos..."

"Ion records, also, the most successful expression which he used to move the Athenians."

These are from Plutarch's writings on Aristides and Kimon.

The only problem is these generate a strong desire to curl up on a couch with some tea and reread the series...

Someone on my facebook feed just posted this yesterday:

"Hurricane Irene,
I hope I've just made the first
haiku about you."

Of course, I thought of Attolia.

Have you heard of Pottermore?  Check out this preview from Publisher's Weekly:

"Pottermore is an elaborate virtual tapestry seamlessly streaming
published text, new writings by J.K. Rowling, animated images, and
social networking elements, including Facebook links."

I want Attoliamore.

3D-images!  Backstories about people and places!  Interactive roleplaying!  Collecting hidden treasures!  I want all this about GEN.

I've been imagining what Attoliamore would look like.  A girl can dream, right?  What would you most like to see in Attoliamore?  Whose backstory?  What places would you like to visit?  What scenes should be reenacted?

[identity profile] hapaxnym.livejournal.com
I'm sure that you've all already played with Google Guitar, the interactive Google doodle in honor of Les Paul.

And that you know that if you press the "record" button and type in a string of numbers or letters, it will "translate" that into a melody.

So, of course we've spent the evening typing in the names of some of our favorite characters.  Most of the QT names, mmmeeehh, but "Eugenides" is just perfect -- deceptively simple but with dark undercurrents.

And "Sophos" -- can't you just hear that bunny hop-hop hoppin'?
[identity profile] m-chant.livejournal.com

Soo...how does everyone pronounce the names?

Sounis: I say SO-NISS, though my mind tells me SUE-NISS.
Sounisian: I say SON-EE-ZHINZ, though my mind tells me SUE-NISS-EE-INZ.

Eddis: ED-DISS, or EE-DISS?
Eddisians: My mind says ED-DEE-ZHINZ, though my logic says ED-DISS-EE-INZ.

Attolia: AT-ALL-EE-AH, or AT-OH-LEE-AH?

Pol: POLE?

Sophos: My knowledge of Ancient Greek tells me SAW-FOSS, but might it be SO-FOESS?

Seperchia: SE-PEAR-KEY-AH?

Mede: MEAD? MEE-DEE? And Medes: MEADS? Or MEE-DEEZ?

Nahuseresh: Nah-HUH-Se-Resh?

Teleus: TEE-LEE-USS or TELL-EE-USS?

Erondites: My Ancient Greek-ness tells me AIR-ON-DIT-ACE (accent on DI), but I want to say AIR-ON-DITE-EASE.
Dite: DIT-AY? Or DIE-TEE?

Aristogiton: @_@. I'll leave this one open.

Tangled!

Hey everyone! I've been absent here for a long time...(still digesting CoA), but after watching Disney's "Tangled" today, I had to come back and gush to people who'd understand.

I actually heard about this Rapunzel-remake movie here first, because someone mentioned it was a movie with a dashing thief, much like our own Eugenides. I missed it in theaters, but I've been DYING to watch it on DVD to see how thief Flynn Rider measured up to thief Gen.

(Let me break here and apologize if I'm just repeating a whole conversation that you guys may have had in my absence. If so, feel free to palm-->forehead and move on.)

Well, obviously, Flynn is totally adorable and funny and arrogant and dashing and he spends a lot of time running from people who are after him. Sounds familiar, yes? I mean, I was in love with him as it is. He even looked a lot like how I imagine Gen (minus the beard thing).

*sigh*

Anyway, the name "Flynn" is clearly a tribute to Errol Flynn, who played Robin Hood...another exemplary thief. I was content with that.

BUT THEN!!

During a touching scene around a campfire, Flynn reveals to Rapunzel that his real name is EUGENE! *screams*

I nearly peed in my pants! I mean, seriously, how can THAT be a coincidence?! Eugene, Eugenides...Come on!

Tell me I'm not the only one of us that freaked out when they watched that movie? I generally, don't get all girl screamy, but THAT made me wave my hands and squeal and everything!

All that IMDb reveals on the matter was that the hero's name was originally going to be Bastion. Why the change? Was Disney tipped off to OUR thief's name?

Ok, discuss.

Megan shares her favorite books of the year over at The Book Smugglers- http://thebooksmugglers.com/2010/12/smugglivus-2010-guest-author-megan-whalen-turner.html

I was particularly pleased to see that she liked Kage Baker's The Hotel Under the Sand, a book I found rather lovely myself!

Interesting interview here.

It touches on the writing process, elephants, Bob (aka Boagus), and surfing.

Would love to stay and chat but it's OFF TO THE BOOKSTORE I GO.

Hello all! I am currently deeply and contentedly enmeshed in a rather arduous research adventure through the annals of the [livejournal.com profile] sounis community. I am attempting to create a history of the term "Queen's Thief" as a designation for the series. I plan on submitting the history to Greenwillow, and through them to Ms. Turner, for their consideration. You might consider this my plea to get them to make the name official. :)

Please help me out by answering this poll!

[Poll #1531956]

Thank you so much for your participation!
