post-KoA thoughts.
Apr. 6th, 2007 04:45 pmSo I've just finished KoA, and wow. Just wow. It was great. I love how it was open-ended, so there's enough room for another sequel. Can barely wait, but I know MWT likes to take her time. Meh.
Anyway, I've been thinking a lot, and I don't know if these have come up here before, but I want to read what you guys think.
I was watching The Fountain last night, when I thought the queen there, Queen Isabella (Here and here), portrayed by Rachel Weisz, looked like what I imagined the Queen of Attolia would look like. In the books, she was described as very fair, and having dark hair and a coldness about her, and there were scenes in The Fountain that brought out those images to me.
I think Rachel Weisz would make a good Queen of Attolia if they ever plan on making a movie (and they should!), even though she looks a little older than the canon. She does have the look though, in my opinion.
Have you guys ever thought of who might make a good Attolia/Eugenides/Eddis/Sophos/Costis, etc. for the movies? Personally, I can't think of anybody who would be good enough for Eugenides; they might have to bring in a new, unknown guy for him. What do you guys think?
What bowled me over in King of Attolia, besides all the crafty twists and stuff, was how Gen and Irene's relationship blossomed, if not consummated. My favorite Gen/Irene part in KoA would have to be the part where she kisses him and tells him that she "loves every single one of his ridiculous lies."
Now that part was a huge surprise for me, not only because it was really out of character for Attolia, but because it was tangible proof of Attolia's love for Gen. Big giddy moment for me.
But I must say my favorite Gen/Irene scene is still the part when they were climbing the stairs to meet Eddis (QoA), and when Gen came to Attolia's tent to kiss her on the lips (still QoA). I have this thing for love/hate relationships, heh.
But what's your favorite Gen/Irene moment? If any, that is. I'm assuming everyone ships the canon, though I admittedly ship Gen/Myself, too. :P
Last question! Which is your favorite book in the series? I loved them all, and they all had their particular highlights, but I really, really loved QoA.
So, yeah. Sorry if I'm bombarding you guys with questions. I'm interested in different POVs about the books and the characters. Comment away, please! :D

Date: 4/6/07 11:43 am (UTC)2) I dunno, I'm pretty sure they're pretty consummated. Slipping off to her room every night? Don't even tell me they're not consummating. :) As for my favorite moment, I am absolutely mad about the bit in KoA where he asks her to reassure him after a nightmare. I love your eyes, I love your ears, I love every one of your impossible lies. KYAAAA!
3) KoA. All of the ability MWT demonstrated in the first book gets so polished and so subtle and so layered by KoA that I am completely astounded. As a piece of writing, it is astonishing. And I love poor Costis, and as for Gen and Irene...oh sigh. And anyway, as much as I've read the other books, it's the only one that's made me read it three times in a row, within a couple of weeks.

Date: 4/6/07 11:50 am (UTC)And Canon is just all the material supplied by the original creators, i.e. TV episodes, JKR's actual Harry Potter books, etc. Slightly outside canon, but still valid, are the extras from the source, such as interviews, cast photos in character, etc. This apocrypha can sometimes yield a great many tidbits that are pleasing (and sometimes more conclusive than the canon) to hungry shippers who want proof that their ship is valid.
Hope that helps!

Date: 4/6/07 12:04 pm (UTC)1. We have a huge, long, spiralling thread on who we thought would make good actors for the characters somewhere. But, since I can't find it to link to it, by all means, let's discuss it again. :) Rachel Weisz looks frighteningly close to my vision of Attolia in that picture. I still think that little known Benedict Cumberbatch (http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/faces/images/benedict_cumberbatch_large.jpg) would make a good Sophos, if he weren't too old. I think I remember suggesting David Tennant for Gen - though Eddisians are a little more difficult to place because of their colouring.
2. I...thought that was the point of the revelation that they were sleeping in the same bed? Er, not sure about that.
My favourite part would have to be one of the points in KoA. I loved the bit when she appears after Gen's had a nightmare and Costis has blasted open his door and the attendants won't leave. The 'ouch', got to me. :)
3. Oh, um, I can't choose one. They're all wonderful, in different ways. I loved the way KoA was written, I loved Gen in the Thief, and QoA...well...it's hard not to love a book which can make you come to like a character who cuts off the protagonist's hand and then refuses to marry him.

Date: 4/6/07 01:30 pm (UTC)re: your (2) Oh! Oh! The OUCH. I still adore my (2) because I think it's one of the most perfectly written scenes of romantic love I've ever read. But the ouch is good. The ouch is terribly good. And poor darling Costis is just, you know, Moving People Firmly all over the place. It's pretty splendid.

Date: 4/6/07 02:43 pm (UTC)I adored the bit with 'I love every one of your ridiculous lies' too. It was a lovely scene. I suppose I just liked the nightmare one because it followed their fight, and because it seemed to sum up a big part of their relationship. And they weren't trying to hide it from anyone.
Poor darling Costis is right. :) Heh, Moving People Firmly. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Gen's mysterious idea for him is.

very hard to choose a favorite... probably the one at the end after the sword fighting. "My Queen" "My King" ... "I want my breakfast" "You are incorrigible" and all the words in between that I didn't type out
3. The Thief is still my favorite. I just love seeing inside Gen's head :)

Date: 4/6/07 04:37 pm (UTC)That was a lovely little scene, I didn't think of it because it's a little overshadowed by the fighting beforehand and then the revelations afterwards.
(And I have to just say, the bunny ears! Awesome icon.)

Date: 4/6/07 04:38 pm (UTC)Well, it took three years for QoA, and then six years for KoA. I just hope it isn't going to be twelve years until the next one.
