So I've just finished KoA, and wow. Just wow. It was great. I love how it was open-ended, so there's enough room for another sequel. Can barely wait, but I know MWT likes to take her time. Meh.

Anyway, I've been thinking a lot, and I don't know if these have come up here before, but I want to read what you guys think.

I was watching The Fountain last night, when I thought the queen there, Queen Isabella (Here and here), portrayed by Rachel Weisz, looked like what I imagined the Queen of Attolia would look like. In the books, she was described as very fair, and having dark hair and a coldness about her, and there were scenes in The Fountain that brought out those images to me.

I think Rachel Weisz would make a good Queen of Attolia if they ever plan on making a movie (and they should!), even though she looks a little older than the canon. She does have the look though, in my opinion.

Have you guys ever thought of who might make a good Attolia/Eugenides/Eddis/Sophos/Costis, etc. for the movies? Personally, I can't think of anybody who would be good enough for Eugenides; they might have to bring in a new, unknown guy for him. What do you guys think?

What bowled me over in King of Attolia, besides all the crafty twists and stuff, was how Gen and Irene's relationship blossomed, if not consummated. My favorite Gen/Irene part in KoA would have to be the part where she kisses him and tells him that she "loves every single one of his ridiculous lies."

Now that part was a huge surprise for me, not only because it was really out of character for Attolia, but because it was tangible proof of Attolia's love for Gen. Big giddy moment for me.

But I must say my favorite Gen/Irene scene is still the part when they were climbing the stairs to meet Eddis (QoA), and when Gen came to Attolia's tent to kiss her on the lips (still QoA). I have this thing for love/hate relationships, heh.

But what's your favorite Gen/Irene moment? If any, that is. I'm assuming everyone ships the canon, though I admittedly ship Gen/Myself, too. :P

Last question! Which is your favorite book in the series? I loved them all, and they all had their particular highlights, but I really, really loved QoA.

So, yeah. Sorry if I'm bombarding you guys with questions. I'm interested in different POVs about the books and the characters. Comment away, please! :D

"I'm assuming everyone ships the canon." Okay, I know I'm old, guys, but I have no idea what that means. Help me out here.

Ship= short for "relationship," and refers in fandom to the romantic pairing that you support. People get very intense about their ships, particularly in Harry Potter fandom, and there is a tendency towards wildness, war and raging when one group of shippers (House/Wilson versus House/Cuddy! ...though good luck with that one now) threatens or mocks another. It's a little crazy.

And Canon is just all the material supplied by the original creators, i.e. TV episodes, JKR's actual Harry Potter books, etc. Slightly outside canon, but still valid, are the extras from the source, such as interviews, cast photos in character, etc. This apocrypha can sometimes yield a great many tidbits that are pleasing (and sometimes more conclusive than the canon) to hungry shippers who want proof that their ship is valid.

Hope that helps!

1) No idea.

2) I dunno, I'm pretty sure they're pretty consummated. Slipping off to her room every night? Don't even tell me they're not consummating. :) As for my favorite moment, I am absolutely mad about the bit in KoA where he asks her to reassure him after a nightmare. I love your eyes, I love your ears, I love every one of your impossible lies. KYAAAA!

3) KoA. All of the ability MWT demonstrated in the first book gets so polished and so subtle and so layered by KoA that I am completely astounded. As a piece of writing, it is astonishing. And I love poor Costis, and as for Gen and Irene...oh sigh. And anyway, as much as I've read the other books, it's the only one that's made me read it three times in a row, within a couple of weeks.

Interesting post!

1. We have a huge, long, spiralling thread on who we thought would make good actors for the characters somewhere. But, since I can't find it to link to it, by all means, let's discuss it again. :) Rachel Weisz looks frighteningly close to my vision of Attolia in that picture. I still think that little known Benedict Cumberbatch (http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/faces/images/benedict_cumberbatch_large.jpg) would make a good Sophos, if he weren't too old. I think I remember suggesting David Tennant for Gen - though Eddisians are a little more difficult to place because of their colouring.

2. I...thought that was the point of the revelation that they were sleeping in the same bed? Er, not sure about that.

My favourite part would have to be one of the points in KoA. I loved the bit when she appears after Gen's had a nightmare and Costis has blasted open his door and the attendants won't leave. The 'ouch', got to me. :)

3. Oh, um, I can't choose one. They're all wonderful, in different ways. I loved the way KoA was written, I loved Gen in the Thief, and QoA...well...it's hard not to love a book which can make you come to like a character who cuts off the protagonist's hand and then refuses to marry him.

Oh wow. Rachel Weisz is totally Attolia. That's amazing.

re: your (2) Oh! Oh! The OUCH. I still adore my (2) because I think it's one of the most perfectly written scenes of romantic love I've ever read. But the ouch is good. The ouch is terribly good. And poor darling Costis is just, you know, Moving People Firmly all over the place. It's pretty splendid.

1. He would be a good Costis... looks vaguely familiar. Cillian Murphy was another Gen candidate.

2. Yeah

very hard to choose a favorite... probably the one at the end after the sword fighting. "My Queen" "My King" ... "I want my breakfast" "You are incorrigible" and all the words in between that I didn't type out

3. The Thief is still my favorite. I just love seeing inside Gen's head :)

I feel a little like we shouldn't talk about the next book or we'll jinx it.

Well, it took three years for QoA, and then six years for KoA. I just hope it isn't going to be twelve years until the next one.

1. Well. If they hold off on this film for about five years, I plan to play Eddis myself. ^^ I agree that Cillian Murphy would be a kickass Eugenides; Johnny Depp would also be perfect if he were about fifteen years younger. Attolia sort of looks like Eva Green in my head.

2. I ship Gen/Everyone! I love when he comes into the tent in QoA with his sword unsheathed and kisses her.

3. The Queen of Attolia cannot be beaten. "Diplomacy, in my own name."

Rachel Weisz does look a lot like Attolia, though Attolia, in my mind, is even more beautiful and less cruel-looking (there's a very faint something about Ms. Weisz's eyebrows in that shot). And her hair would be a bit darker.

"I'm assuming everyone ships the canon"

Not necessarily. Jade does Gen/Heiro and Attolia/Relius. She won't give me a straight answer on whether it's unrequited.

"though I admittedly ship Gen/Myself, too."

Lol.

I like basically all of the scenes where they're together except for the hand-chopping scene and what's prior. I mean, that has dramatic tension, but not romantic tension.

1. She makes a very good Attolia, but I can't help seeing Angelina Jolie (http://www.cercagratis.eu/foto-gratis-angelina-jolie/angelina-jolie-1.jpg) in the part. She scares the hell out of me.

2. I love many scenes, but I think my favorite is still the ending of QoA where they face what she has done to him and convince one another of their feelings.

3. QoA still, I think. Perhaps. Maybe.

Angelina Jolie's lips scare the heck out of me. She's a little too exotic for my Attolia. XD

1.) I haven't found anyone yet that I think would be perfect for Attolia, but Rachel Weisz is definitely the closest I've seen. I like David Tennant for Eugenides, but they'd have to do some serious makeup work to change his coloring.

2.) I love the end of QoA, and also the scene when Attolia comes to let Gen out of prison.

3.) QoA has always been my favorite.

Okay, BEFORE I go through everyone else's answers, I'll go ahead and answer myself.

1) We have; I think there might even be a tag about "actors/actresses." I hadn't ever thought of it before, but that pic of Rachel Weisz (who is one of my favorite actresses anyway) was very convincing. I don't have clear pictures of the characters in my head, really, though, so to me it's not as big a deal.

My favorite Gen/Irene moment? Oh, Lord. (Here's an icon for your favorite moment; if you want it, credit [livejournal.com profile] loquaciousquark.) Um...probably...well, I'm really, REALLY fond of the one where she talks to him after the Mede show up--"From shadow queen to puppet queen"--and also of the scene in the prison ("You were fed.").
heeheehee.

My favorite book is definitely QoA. It's the first one I read, and it's just...my favorite of the three, and one of my flat-out favorite books of all time. ^_^

Yes. Weisz is who I see when I envision Attolia, especially in KoA when she is more of a human being. My absolute favorite scene in the book is the DWJ homage ("What a lie that was.") and Weisz and James McAvoy are totally the Attolia and Eugenides of my mind's eye.

Actually, I hope these books never become movies, because I know no one would ever do them justice. I'm content just reading the books -- they're perfect and inviolate that way.

1) That Rachel Weisz photo looks more like Attolia than any other photo I've seen! I haven't really thought about who plays who. I tend to just squee when others suggest people I like.

2) Jeez. This is hard. So darn...many...good...moments. The last scene of QoA was fantabulous, as was after the assassination in KoA when Attolia touches Gen and scares him and he kisses her. Um...also the dancing scene with the hairpins.

3) It changes depending on my mood. But I can't decide what mood I'm in so...I just can't decide! *glows with indecisiveness*

I have trouble deciding my favorite Gen/Irene moment. But I have three favorite scenes in the KoA.
(1) when he get destroys the house of Erondite's (the plan was so awsome and I was just blown away)
(2) when Gen was drunk and talking to costis (I thought that part was really funny)
(3) and when Teleus finally realizes that Gen isn't "a prancing light weight" and he smacks Teleus in the neck, then he reveals how he baited Costis to get to Teleus so that he could half the gaurd and he says "if you tease a dog it bites"
I am sorry if that seems confusing the way I explained it. I suck at explaining things xD

Okay finally decided my favorite Gen/Irene moment. The part when they climb up the stairs in the QoA and Eugenides makes the goat sound, I just thought that part was funny.
But my favorite part was when they danced, and of course the part when Irene kisses Gen and tells him she loves everyone of his ridiculous lies. cliche. lol
